To save a webpage as a PDF in Linux, open it in Firefox or Chrome, choose the browser’s print command, select its PDF destination, review the preview and settings, then save. For repeatable captures from the command line, Chrome’s headless mode can print a URL directly to a PDF file.
Save a webpage as a PDF in Firefox
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Open the menu and select Print… to open print preview.
- Set Destination to Save to PDF.
- Review the preview and adjust settings such as orientation, pages, paper size, scale, margins, headers and footers, or print backgrounds.
- Select Print, choose where to save the file if prompted, and confirm.
Check the preview before saving: websites can use print-specific styling, so the PDF may not look exactly like the page on screen. Mozilla notes, “Web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper to how they look on screen, so don’t be surprised to see some changes.” (Mozilla Support: How to print web pages in Firefox)

Save a webpage as a PDF in Chrome
- Open the webpage in Chrome and press Ctrl+P.
- In the print window, choose the PDF destination shown in your installation. It is commonly labelled Save as PDF.
- Review the available print settings and preview.
- Select Save or the corresponding confirmation button, then choose a location and filename.
The exact destination label and print interface can vary. Use the PDF option actually shown by your installed browser. See Google’s Chrome printing instructions.

chrome --headless --print-to-pdf https://example.com/
By default, Chrome writes output.pdf in the current working directory. To omit Chrome’s generated date, title, URL and page header/footer, use:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.com/
Older Chrome versions may use the former flag name --print-to-pdf-no-header. If the page fills in content asynchronously, you can set a maximum capture wait, for example five seconds:

chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --timeout=5000 https://example.com/
The timeout is an upper wait limit, not proof that every page script has finished. Open the resulting PDF and check that it contains the content you need. Site access controls, scripts and print styles can still affect the result. Chrome documents these options in its Headless command-line reference.
Choose the right method
| Need | Method | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Save one page and inspect its layout | Firefox or Chrome print preview | Page range, orientation, paper size, margins, scale, headers and footers |
| Generate PDFs from URLs repeatedly | Chrome Headless | Output directory and filename, header/footer behavior, capture wait, browser version |
| Print an existing PDF on paper | Desktop print workflow or CUPS | Selected printer and supported print options |
CUPS is for sending a file to a printer; it is not required to create a PDF using the browser workflows above. See CUPS command-line printing documentation. The cited documentation does not establish that Firefox or Chrome produces more faithful PDFs in general; results depend on the particular page and browser.

Troubleshoot PDF output
- The PDF layout differs from the screen: Inspect print preview and try its layout controls, including scale, margins, orientation and print backgrounds. A site may apply separate print styles.
- Headless output is missing content: Increase
--timeoutand inspect the file. The timeout only limits how long Chrome waits; it does not ensure that every script or remote resource has completed. - The PDF destination is named differently or missing: Check the destinations shown by your installed browser and its print interface. Labels and availability vary.
- The command is not recognized: Confirm Chrome is installed and callable as
chromein your shell. The command examples do not specify distribution-specific installation steps; package names and repositories differ between Linux distributions. - You need paper, not a PDF file: Open the saved PDF and send it to a selected printer through the desktop print workflow or CUPS. A printer is not needed just to create the PDF.
Or skip the browser setup
