How to Preview MUI Icons in VS Code Without Leaving Your Project

MUI Icon Preview lets you inspect and insert icons from your project’s installed @mui/icons-material package without leaving VS Code.

MUI Icon Preview lets you inspect icons from your project’s installed @mui/icons-material package inside VS Code. It offers three ways to find them: hover over an imported icon, view SVGs in completion details, or run the MUI Icons: Search command to search and insert icon code. You need VS Code 1.85 or newer, a file-system-backed workspace, and the icon package installed in that workspace.

What the MUI icon preview extension does

MUI Icon Preview reads icon source files from the current workspace and turns them into SVG previews in the editor. It is a workspace-aware tool, not a standalone catalog: the icons it can inspect depend on the @mui/icons-material package available in the project you have open. The VS Code Marketplace listing describes three discovery workflows.

Hover over an imported icon

Hover over an imported MUI icon to see a 64 × 64 SVG preview. The listing describes the popup as showing the icon; the extension author’s announcement also says it displays the icon’s name and an import statement, with a route to MUI documentation. The author says the aim was “a quicker way to recognize and explore MUI icons while coding.”

Inspect completion details

The extension provides suggestions for MUI icon component names in TypeScript, TypeScript React (TSX), JavaScript, and JavaScript React (JSX). When you focus a suggestion, its SVG preview appears in VS Code’s suggestion details panel. It does not appear inside the completion row: the Marketplace listing explains that VS Code extensions cannot place arbitrary images directly in completion rows. If the details panel is collapsed, use VS Code’s Toggle Suggestion Details command to show it.

#1 Best Overall

Search from the Command Palette

Run MUI Icons: Search from the Command Palette to search icons installed in the workspace. The command inserts an import and component usage, so this workflow can take you from finding an icon to adding it to code without manually looking up the component name.

How do I preview MUI icons in VS Code?

First make sure the project open in VS Code has @mui/icons-material installed. Then choose the workflow that suits what you are doing:

  • Already have an icon in code: hover over its import to see the preview.
  • Choosing a component while coding: use icon-name completions and inspect the focused suggestion in the details panel.
  • Looking for an icon by name: run MUI Icons: Search from the Command Palette and select a result to insert its import and usage.

The listing specifies VS Code 1.85 or newer and a file-system-backed workspace. It names Local, SSH, WSL, and Dev Container workspaces as supported, provided the package is installed in the workspace being inspected. The listed language support is TypeScript, TSX, JavaScript, and JSX; the listing does not establish support for other languages.

What icons can it preview?

The available icons come from the version of @mui/icons-material installed in your project. MUI’s icon documentation says Google created over 2,100 official Material icons and that each SVG is exported as a React component from that package. That is MUI’s published collection figure, not a guarantee that every icon is present in every package version or project.

MUI’s icons use its SvgIcon component, so @mui/icons-material has a peer dependency on @mui/material. MUI documents both direct imports, such as @mui/icons-material/AccessAlarm, and named imports from the package root; it describes direct per-icon imports as the safest approach for bundle size.

The default icon theme is Filled. MUI also provides Outlined, Rounded, Two-tone, and Sharp variants, with the theme name appended to the component name. For example, the outlined delete icon is DeleteOutlined. Which names are available to the extension depends on the installed package.

Does the extension send project files online?

The Marketplace listing says the extension reads icon source files from the active workspace and converts them into SVG previews locally. It also says workspace content is not uploaded or sent to an external service and that the extension uses no network access. These are the listing’s stated behaviors, not an independent security audit.

When is an in-editor preview useful?

If you have searched for an icon name just to check what it looks like, an in-editor preview can avoid switching between your code and a separate catalog. Hover is suited to checking an icon already in use; completion details help when you are entering a component name; the search command is useful when you want to look up an installed icon and insert its code.

These workflows differ from browsing MUI’s catalog directly, but the available product information does not establish a head-to-head comparison with a separate catalog or another in-editor picker. It documents this extension’s workspace-based source, supported languages and workspace types, preview locations, and search insertion behavior; it does not establish comparative speed or performance.
