You can inspect a link without opening its destination in a browser tab by checking its search result, using a chat app’s link preview, or requesting a rendered screenshot through a preview service. Each method reveals different information; none proves that a site is safe. If the link is suspicious, check the domain carefully and heed browser security warnings before visiting it.
Choose a preview based on where the link is
The best method depends on whether you have a URL, a message containing a link, or a link on another webpage—and on whether you need a title and snippet or a visual rendering of the page.

If all you need is to check that a link points to the expected organization, start by inspecting its visible domain. If you need to see the page’s layout, text or images, a rendered screenshot is more useful than a search snippet.
Use a search result to inspect a URL
- Copy the link without visiting it. On a computer, right-click the link and choose the option to copy its address; on a phone, press and hold the link and choose the copy-link option if your app offers it.
- Paste the address or search for the page title or domain. Look at the displayed result rather than selecting it.
- Compare the visible domain and title with what you expected. A result may show a text snippet or thumbnail as well. Google Search Central described search previews as a way to help people judge whether a result is relevant (2019).
A search result is only a partial representation of a page. The destination might have changed since it was indexed, the snippet may be drawn from a different part of the page, or there may be no result for a new or unindexed URL. A search result can help you recognize a page; it cannot certify the live destination or guarantee what will load after a click.

Use a link preview in Slack or another chat app
In apps that support link unfurls, paste or share the URL in a message. The app may show a card with a title, description, image or other page information. Slack documents that shared links can produce previews for other members and that previews can be removed or disabled. Its work-object previews can also contain external content that Slack has not validated or endorsed.
Remember that sharing a URL with a service can expose it to that service, and generating a preview may involve fetching the destination. Avoid putting confidential, private or one-time URLs into a chat merely to inspect them. If an unfurl looks unfamiliar, treat it as an aid to recognition—not as a verdict on whether the link is trustworthy.
Use a URL-preview API in software
If your application needs to show a title, description or image before someone follows a link, a URL-preview API can do that without asking each user to open the destination first. Microsoft’s URL Preview reference documents an API endpoint for requesting preview results and says content-owner requests to disable previews must be honored. That makes publisher controls part of the implementation: a preview service may return less information or none when the owner opts out.

Before sending URLs to any preview provider, decide whether the URLs can contain private tokens, customer data or internal addresses. A provider that fetches user-supplied URLs also creates a security boundary: validate which URLs your application will accept, and follow the provider’s guidance for preventing access to resources that should not be exposed. Do not assume a preview API’s response is a security verdict or that a missing preview means a URL is harmless.
Try a hover-preview extension carefully
Some browser extensions advertise a floating preview window or pane when you hover over a link. This can help when a URL is embedded in another webpage and you do not want to open a new tab. It is an optional convenience, not a universal browser feature.
- Check the extension’s current store listing and publisher before installing it; listings, maintenance and browser support can change.
- Review the permissions it requests. An extension that can read or change data on websites may have access broader than the single link you want to inspect.
- Use the browser’s extension controls to disable or remove it if it is no longer maintained or you do not need it.
- Do not mistake a rendered preview for isolation. The extension or a remote service may still request the destination’s content.

A preview is metadata or a rendering, not a security sandbox. It can be stale, incomplete or misleading, and a screenshot service’s page verdict is not a substitute for browser protection. Use a few checks together:
- Read the domain carefully. Watch for misspellings, extra words, lookalike characters and unexpected subdomains. A familiar brand name in a path does not make a different domain official.
- Check the connection and browser warnings. HTTPS encrypts the connection, but it does not prove that the site itself is legitimate. Chrome says unsafe sites can trigger a full-page warning; do not bypass a warning just because a preview looked normal.
- Use Safe Browsing warnings. Google Safe Browsing says Chrome and other browsers use Safe Browsing to warn users before they visit a dangerous site or download a harmful app. Treat a warning as a reason to stop, not as a prompt to trust an unrelated preview.
- Do not enter credentials from a preview. If the link asks you to sign in or provide payment details, navigate to the organization through a known official address or app instead of relying on the preview card.
Troubleshooting: why a preview may fail or mislead
No search result appears
The URL may be new, unindexed, private or blocked from previewing. Search for the domain and page title instead, or use a rendered screenshot service for a page you are allowed to inspect. No result is not evidence that a page is safe or unavailable.
The chat preview is missing or wrong
The app may not support unfurls for that URL, the publisher may restrict previews, or the displayed information may not reflect the current page. Use the app’s preview controls where available, or check the URL with a different method. Do not infer that the link is safe merely because the card looks familiar.

A screenshot is blank, blocked or incomplete
Some sites show bot checks or CAPTCHAs, fail to load, or render content only after interaction. A screenshot can also miss content that appears after scrolling or waiting. Try a full-page capture or an appropriate wait or selector option; if the page returns a bot check, do not treat the image as the real page. The preview exposes information you did not intend to share
Stop sharing the URL and remove the message or preview if the app allows it. Preview requests can disclose a URL to a chat platform, API or extension, while a rendered page request can be visible to the destination site. Keep private tokens and session credentials out of URLs used for previews, and do not paste sensitive links into services you have not approved.
What a preview can—and cannot—tell you
Search snippets and chat unfurls are fast ways to recognize a page; rendered screenshots show more of its appearance. The trade-off is that richer previews usually involve another service fetching or rendering the URL, which can have privacy implications. For a suspicious destination, rely on domain checks and browser warnings rather than appearance alone. A preview can help you decide whether a link is relevant, but it cannot prove what will happen when you visit it.
