Open the link in a browser, then choose the capture scope you need: use Chrome DevTools for the visible viewport, the entire page, or a selected rectangle. For repeated or automated captures, use a URL screenshot API instead. The correct method depends on whether you need what is currently visible, everything below the fold, or a hands-off workflow.
Choose the right kind of screenshot
A browser screenshot can mean three different outputs:
- Viewport: only the pixels currently visible in the browser window.
- Full page: the complete document, including content below the fold.
- Area: a rectangle you select, such as a chart or a single card.
Decide this before capturing. A viewport image is usually best for documenting what a visitor sees at a particular screen size. A full-page image is better for design reviews and archiving long pages. An area capture avoids cropping an unrelated sidebar or browser controls.
Chrome: capture the page from its link
Visible viewport or full page
- Open the URL in Chrome and wait for the page to finish loading.
- Open DevTools (right-click the page and choose Inspect, or use
Ctrl+Shift+Ion Windows/Linux orCmd+Option+Ion Mac). - Enable Device Mode if it is not already active by selecting the phone/tablet icon, or pressing
Ctrl+Shift+M(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+M(Mac). - Open the Device Mode More options menu (the three-dot menu in the device toolbar).
- Choose Capture screenshot for the current viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page. Chrome documents the full-size command as including content outside the viewport: Chrome Device Mode screenshot documentation.
Chrome saves a PNG to your normal Downloads folder. The emulated viewport, device pixel ratio and page zoom affect the resulting dimensions, so set those deliberately when comparing screenshots.

Capture a selected area
- Keep DevTools docked to the browser window. Chrome’s documented area workflow does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Open the Command Menu with
Ctrl+Shift+Pon Windows/Linux orCmd+Shift+Pon Mac. - Type screenshot, then select Capture area screenshot.
- Drag around the part of the page you want and release. Chrome saves the selected rectangle.

Make the capture accurate
- Wait for dynamic content: let fonts, images and charts finish loading. A full-page command can otherwise include placeholders.
- Set the intended width: responsive layouts may show a different navigation or column arrangement at each viewport width.
- Handle sticky elements: fixed headers can appear repeatedly or cover content in a long capture. Scroll manually to check the result.
- Choose a page state: close cookie notices, chat bubbles and newsletter prompts if they are not part of what you are documenting; leave them open if you are recording the visitor experience.
- Use a stable URL: include required path, query string and hash fragments. A link that redirects or requires a login may not render the same way for another person.
Firefox and extensions
Firefox’s built-in option
Firefox documentation includes a screenshot feature and a --fullpage option for saving an entire webpage. The exact menu labels and shortcuts can vary by Firefox release, so open the current Firefox screenshot command from the browser UI and confirm whether you want the visible page or full page. GoFullPage extension
The Chrome Web Store listing for GoFullPage describes an extension that auto-scrolls through a page and exports an image or PDF. It is a third-party extension, not a Chrome feature; permissions, availability and behavior can change. Review its current listing and permissions before installing, especially for pages containing confidential data.

Automate a screenshot from a URL
If you capture links on a schedule, in CI, or for many pages, a browser click path is laborious. An HTTP screenshot API accepts the URL and returns an image (or, for some services, a PDF). Cloudflare’s Browser Rendering screenshot API documents URL or HTML capture with options including viewport, fullPage and clip. Troubleshooting
The screenshot is blank
Reload the link and wait for network activity, fonts and images to settle. For automation, add a selector, delay or network-idle wait. A login wall, bot check or failed JavaScript application may prevent a useful render; test the URL in a normal browser first.

The bottom of a long page is missing
Use Chrome’s Capture a full size screenshot, not Capture screenshot. In an API, set the full-page option and ensure lazy-loaded content has time to load.

Dock DevTools, reopen the Command Menu, search for screenshot, and select Capture area screenshot. An undocked DevTools window is a documented limitation.
Content differs between captures
Check viewport width, device scale, timezone, geolocation, cookies and authentication. Personalized or rotating content may legitimately change. Supply deterministic headers or cookies in an API request where permitted.

The file is too large
Capture an element or clip instead of the whole page, lower the retina scale, choose JPEG/WebP where transparency is unnecessary, or resize the returned image.
An automated request is billed unexpectedly
Read the response’s X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Cache hits and failed loads should be identified there; configure a cache TTL when repeated URLs do not need a fresh render.

Will a full-page screenshot include content that loads only when I scroll?
Not always. Give the page time to load lazy content, or use an API option that explicitly loads lazy images before full-page capture.
Can I screenshot a page that requires authentication?
A browser can capture it after you sign in. For automation, use a service that supports the page’s permitted authentication headers or cookies and protect those credentials.
What format should I choose?
PNG preserves sharp text and transparency; JPEG is smaller for photographic pages; WebP often provides a smaller modern image. Choose PDF when the deliverable is a document rather than a raster image.
