If your WhatsApp automation replies to its own messages or sends the same answer more than once, check the integration’s webhook handling first. For a WhatsApp Business Platform Cloud API workflow, the key safeguards are to distinguish customer messages from status notifications and business-originated echoes, then deduplicate events before sending a reply. This guidance applies to webhook-based automations; it does not establish a fix for auto-replies configured only in the WhatsApp Business app.
Why WhatsApp automations can reply twice or to themselves
The WhatsApp Business Platform sends webhook events to an application for incoming messages, outgoing-message statuses, and other activity. Meta’s webhook overview, updated December 2, 2025, says unsuccessful deliveries may be retried with decreasing frequency for up to seven days. Those retries can result in duplicate webhook notifications.

There is also a potential event-classification problem: the messages webhook covers both messages from users to a business and statuses for messages sent by the business. If an automation treats a status as a fresh customer message, it may trigger a reply to its own activity. This is an integration design risk implied by the documented event types, not an inherent WhatsApp loop.
For businesses using supported Business app and Cloud API coexistence arrangements, the smb_message_echoes webhook reports messages sent through the WhatsApp Business app or a linked device. Its payload includes a WhatsApp message ID. An automation that feeds these business-originated echoes into its customer-message reply path can also respond to the business’s own activity. How to stop a webhook automation from sending duplicate replies
- Identify where the auto-reply runs. Determine whether replies come from the WhatsApp Business app’s built-in features, a third-party automation platform, or your own Cloud API/webhook integration. The event-handling steps below are for webhook-based automation; app-only settings are outside the scope of the documented controls.
- Log and classify each event before replying. Record the webhook field, message ID, sender, and timestamp. Determine whether the event represents an inbound customer message, an outgoing-message status, or a business-originated echo. The
messagesevent can include both inbound messages and outgoing statuses, while coexistence can exposesmb_message_echoes. See Meta’s webhook payload examples. - Allow only eligible customer messages into the reply branch. Filter out status notifications and business-originated echoes unless your workflow intentionally handles them. Apply this check before any action that sends a reply.
- Deduplicate before triggering side effects. Store a processed-event key, such as the WhatsApp message ID, and claim it atomically before sending a reply. If the same ID arrives again, acknowledge the delivery without sending another response. Persistent storage and an atomic claim help prevent concurrent or retried deliveries from both triggering a reply.
- Make event handling durable before acknowledging it. Meta’s Node.js SDK receiving guide shows a successful receipt acknowledged with HTTP 200 and says the service will not reattempt that message after it receives that response. Where processing may fail later, record the event or place it in a durable queue before returning success; that ordering is prudent system design, not a guarantee made by the platform. The SDK guide is from an archived project, so verify current platform guidance before relying on its implementation details.
- Verify endpoint access and request handling. The archived SDK guide describes using a publicly accessible HTTPS endpoint and a verification token. Its webhook API reference also documents validating POST signatures. Treat these as SDK-specific guidance and check current WhatsApp Business Platform documentation when implementing security controls.
How to trace the loop or duplicate delivery
Use a test conversation and follow one event through the complete workflow. Correlate the incoming message ID and event field with the automation execution, outgoing send, and any later webhook. The pattern can narrow down the cause:
- One outgoing event enters the inbound-reply branch: inspect event direction and type filters.
- The same message ID triggers multiple executions: inspect persistent deduplication and whether the claim is atomic.
- A delivery recurs after a non-200 response or transport failure: inspect acknowledgment timing and endpoint reliability. Meta documents retries following unsuccessful delivery attempts, but the exact cause of a particular failure must be established from your logs.

When comparing webhook-capable automation approaches, check whether they support the event distinctions and failure handling your setup needs. Useful questions include:
