How to Prevent OBS Audio Clipping in a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Trace audio gain from the source to OBS, tame occasional peaks with a compressor, cap the final signal with a limiter, and verify the mix in a recording.

To prevent clipping in an OBS YouTube stream, reduce excessive gain at its source, use a compressor to tame occasional loud peaks, and place a limiter last in the filter chain as a final ceiling. Then record representative audio—including the loudest material—and listen back before relying on a continuous stream. A low OBS fader alone cannot prove the signal was clean before it reached OBS.

What audio clipping is—and where to look first

In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the maximum level. OBS can process floating-point audio above 0 dBFS internally, but the delivered stream or recording must stay below it to avoid clipping. Clipping may enter at the microphone, mixer, interface, operating-system input, or application level before OBS’s main fader can correct it.

Follow the signal from its origin toward the stream: source or device gain, any mixer or interface controls, operating-system and application levels, then OBS source processing and output. OBS recommends starting at the device and listening as early in the chain as possible, then checking the signal in OBS using Audio Monitoring.

Set input gain and leave headroom

  1. Start with the physical source. Check a microphone’s gain control, mixer channel and master controls, or the audio interface’s manufacturer controls. Lower a setting if the source is already distorted or excessively hot.
  2. Check upstream software controls. Review the operating-system input level and any application volume controls that affect what OBS receives.
  3. Inspect the OBS input and output meters. OBS distinguishes the input-level indicator from the main output peak meter. Its input indicator is before the fader but after source filters. If you suspect the capture input is too hot, temporarily disable relevant filters and check the input indicator; listen to the source before and after OBS.
  4. Adjust the OBS source fader only after upstream checks. A lower fader can reduce the level sent onward, but it does not repair distortion that has already been introduced at the microphone, interface, mixer, or capture input.
  5. Test the loudest expected audio. Speak, play or trigger representative peaks while watching the meters and listening. Avoid setting levels from quiet material alone.

OBS’s 2022 Audio Mixer Technical Details describes -20 dBFS as its alignment level and -9 dBFS as a permitted maximum in the context of meter conventions and safety margins. Those figures are technical metering guidance, not a universal target for every source or a YouTube loudness specification. The OBS mixer guide’s color zones are also practical guidance: speech toward the lower red range, voice in the upper yellow range, and background music or effects in green. Similar meter readings do not necessarily sound equally loud, so judge the mix by listening as well.

Use a compressor for occasional loud peaks

A compressor reduces a source when it crosses a threshold, then lets it return toward its prior level as the sound falls. It is useful for a microphone or other source with occasional spikes; it is not a substitute for correcting excessive gain earlier in the chain.

  1. In OBS, open the source’s Filters and add Compressor.
  2. Place the compressor near the beginning of that source’s filter chain, as OBS recommends.
  3. Set threshold and ratio to suit the source’s loudest realistic material. Use attack and release to shape how quickly gain reduction begins and recovers.
  4. Listen while testing both normal and loud sections. Avoid using output gain to raise average level unless you also check the resulting peaks farther down the chain.

OBS provides controls for ratio, threshold, attack, release, and output gain, but does not prescribe one ideal compressor setting for every stream. Choose settings by testing the actual source and listening for unnatural pumping or distortion.

Optional: lower desktop audio when the microphone is active

If music or desktop audio competes with speech, OBS’s compressor can use sidechain/ducking to reduce the desktop source when the microphone is active. OBS suggests these starting values for that specific use: ratio 32:1, threshold -36 dB, attack 100 ms, release 600 ms, output gain 0 dB, and the microphone as the sidechain source. These are ducking suggestions, not general compressor or limiter settings.

Put a limiter last as the final ceiling

OBS describes its Limiter as a fast, high-ratio compressor that prevents the signal from exceeding its threshold. Add the Limiter as the last filter in the relevant chain so later processing does not undo the ceiling. Its documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release; these are defaults, not guaranteed ideal values for your material.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Test the limiter with the loudest realistic source content. If it is acting constantly, reduce upstream gain or revisit the compressor rather than relying on the limiter to fix an overly hot chain. Listen for pumping and audible distortion, and adjust the threshold and release to balance the ceiling against natural-sounding audio. OBS documents the controls but does not prescribe one threshold for all streams.

Check channel routing as well as level

OBS defaults to stereo. A mono source is heard in both left and right channels, while a stereo source follows its channel assignment. If only one stereo meter is active, viewers may hear the source on only one side; this can sound like a faulty mix rather than clipping. OBS offers Downmix to Mono in the advanced mixer audio options when mono output is appropriate.

Record and listen before leaving a stream running

  1. Record a normal OBS session containing representative content: the loudest voice, alerts, music, gameplay, or other sources the stream may play.
  2. Monitor the source in OBS and listen to the recorded file. Check for harsh distortion, unexpectedly loud transitions, missing channels, and changes in balance between sources.
  3. Repeat the check after changing a source, scene, filter, device, or gain setting.
  4. For a 24/7 operation, arrange a practical way to notice if audio disappears or becomes unexpectedly loud. OBS’s peak-hold marker retains the loudest recent level for 20 seconds, according to its 2026 Audio Mixer Guide; OBS documentation does not specify a 24/7 alerting system, remote-monitoring method, or required checking interval.

OBS also documents automatic reconnect as an option in Settings > Advanced. Reconnecting can help stream continuity if a connection drops, but it does not prevent clipping.

Troubleshoot clipping and other audio problems

Symptom Likely point to check What to do
Audio is distorted even when the OBS fader is low Microphone, mixer, interface, operating-system or application input level Listen earlier in the signal chain, reduce excessive upstream gain, and compare the OBS input indicator with filters temporarily disabled as needed.
Peaks are still too high after adding a compressor Compressor threshold, ratio, output gain, and filters later in the chain Test with loud material, review the resulting peaks downstream, and put the limiter last as the final ceiling.
The limiter sounds like it is pumping or distorting Limiter threshold and release, or excessive level entering it Reduce the level earlier in the chain and retest with representative material; adjust the limiter rather than assuming its defaults suit every source.
Audio seems to come from only one side Stereo channel assignment or a mono/stereo mismatch Check the channel meters and source assignment; use OBS’s Downmix to Mono option in advanced mixer audio options if mono is appropriate.
Speech is hard to hear over music or desktop sound Relative source levels Balance and listen to the sources together, or configure compressor sidechain/ducking on the desktop source using the microphone as the sidechain input.
The audio becomes wrong after a configuration change Changed source, scene, filter, device, or gain setting Record and listen to a new representative session before depending on the changed setup.
