How to Prevent Moisture and Reabsorption Problems in Torrefied Biomass

Torrefied biomass is generally less hygroscopic, not waterproof. Protect it from rain, limit humid-air exposure and monitor product moisture and storage conditions.

Torrefied biomass usually absorbs less moisture from humid air than untreated biomass, but it is not waterproof. To reduce moisture problems in storage, keep rain and other liquid water off the material, limit exposure to humid air, and track product moisture alongside storage temperature and humidity using procedures validated for your operation. There is no universal humidity threshold or packaging method established by the studies cited here.

Why torrefied biomass can still take on moisture

Biomass cell walls contain hydroxyl groups that bind water. Torrefaction alters and partly removes these groups, reducing hydrogen bonding and often lowering equilibrium moisture content. The result is generally less affinity for water, not immunity to it. Feedstock, torrefaction severity, physical structure and storage conditions all affect how a particular product behaves.

Moisture present when production ends is different from moisture absorbed later. A product may leave processing with residual moisture; it can also take up water later from humid air or direct liquid contact. Measurements of one do not automatically describe the other.

A 2021 review by Wei-Hsin Chen and colleagues describes a poplar example in which equilibrium moisture content was 5.72% for raw wood and 3.27% for wood torrefied at 230 °C—a 42.8% reduction under the reported test conditions of 65% humidity for six hours. The same review summarizes poplar contact-angle measurements rising from about 94° at 200 °C to 107° at 230 °C. These are results for specific material and test conditions, not expected performance for every biomass product. Read the 2021 review.

How to prevent moisture from getting back into torrefied biomass during storage

  1. Exclude rain and liquid water. Keep stored material protected from rain, leaks, runoff and other direct wetting. The required storage design depends on the scale, throughput, ventilation, product form and local conditions; the cited studies do not establish one universally effective cover, container or liner.
  2. Limit humid-air exposure. Use storage practices suited to the facility and its conditions to avoid unnecessary exposure to high humidity. The available evidence does not establish a single safe relative-humidity setpoint for all feedstocks and products.
  3. Measure the product and log conditions. Track relevant product moisture and record storage temperature and humidity under site procedures validated for the material and operation. The studies support the relevance of measuring these variables but do not prescribe a universal sensor, sampling frequency or acceptance limit.
  4. Compare like with like. When qualifying a product or process, record feedstock, torrefaction temperature or severity, whether the material is loose or pelletized, and the humidity, temperature and test method used to assess moisture behavior.

Choose the right moisture test for the question

Different tests describe different exposures. Equilibrium moisture content and water-vapor sorption help characterize response to humid air. Contact angle describes how a droplet wets a surface; it does not establish that bulk material will stay dry. Immersion tests examine direct liquid-water exposure and should not be treated as predictions of warehouse vapor sorption.

A 2012 corn-stover study measured water-vapor adsorption in raw and torrefied samples using a static gravimetric method over 10–98% equilibrium relative humidity and 10–40 °C. These are the study’s experimental ranges, not recommended storage limits. Torrefied samples generally had lower equilibrium moisture, and the modified Oswin model best represented the results in that experiment. The paper also reported negligible dry-matter mass loss from microbial degradation for corn stover torrefied at 250 and 300 °C under its test at 97% equilibrium relative humidity and 30 °C. That finding does not establish microbial resistance for other biomass, organisms or storage periods. Read the corn-stover study.

A 2018 study of torrefied poplar and fir reported contact angles of 94–113°. Those values indicate hydrophobic surface behavior under the conventional interpretation that angles above 90° reflect hydrophobicity; they do not prove that bulk material or pellets cannot absorb moisture. What wetting can do to pellets

Pellets can be damaged by liquid water even when torrefaction has reduced their affinity for moisture in humid air. A 2020 woody-pellet study notes that rain and high humidity can affect pellet quality during transport and storage. In immersion tests, raw wood and forest-residue pellets swelled and disintegrated quickly; bark pellets retained their form longer but lost structural integrity after about four hours. These are feedstock-specific liquid-immersion observations, not predictions of storage life or ordinary warehouse moisture uptake. Read the pellet study.

What to specify when evaluating storage performance

  • Material: Identify the feedstock and whether the product is loose biomass or pellets.
  • Process: Record torrefaction temperature or severity; results from one feedstock or setting should not be assumed to apply to another.
  • Exposure: State whether the concern is humid air, rain or immersion.
  • Measurement: Report the moisture metric, method, temperature and humidity alongside the result.

This detail makes comparisons meaningful. A contact angle, an immersion outcome and an equilibrium-moisture measurement answer different questions and cannot be substituted for one another.
