Record the bike’s identifying details and check your workplace facilities and insurance terms; no lock or routine guarantees that a bike cannot be stolen.
How do I stop my e-bike being stolen at work?
Use a recognised cycle-parking facility in a busy, well-lit, overlooked area, preferably within CCTV coverage. A locked indoor room or cage is not automatically secure: check how people enter it, whether access is controlled, and whether the rack and surrounding structure are fixed and sturdy. Police guidance from PSNI and West Yorkshire Police emphasizes both the parking environment and the way the bike is secured.

Secure the frame and wheels to the stand
Keep the bike close to the stand and lock the frame and both wheels to it. Use two quality locks of different types if practical, including at least one D-lock (also called a U-lock). Keep locks off the ground and close to the bike, and avoid a rack that lets someone lift the bike off or gives room to apply leverage. A second lock can make it harder to remove a wheel or take the bike, but no rating promises resistance to every attack method. See Police.uk’s bike-security guidance and PSNI’s advice.

Choose a lock that fits the bike and rack
Before commuting, check that your primary D-lock can secure the frame to the actual workplace stand. For a higher-value e-bike, consider a lock with a recognised independent security rating appropriate to the circumstances; PSNI points readers toward high-security ratings such as Sold Secure Diamond. Check current ratings and lock compatibility before buying, and do not treat a rating as a guarantee. The police guidance cited here does not provide controlled product comparisons, so it does not establish one universally best lock or model.
#1 Best Overall
- Portable & Rugged: The Sportneer bike u lock is both portable and heavy-duty. It measures 7.76x5.02inches, with a thickness of 0.67inches/17mm, and weights 1.64lbs. Plus, its unique polygonal lock body design and silicone coating resist water, dust, and dirt, keeping your bike scratch-free and in tip-top shape.
- Easy to Install & Use: Equipped with a 5ft steel cable and a bracket, the bike lock can secure wheels, frames, or other bikes to posts, fences, or poles. Better yet, the bracket fits bike tubes with a diameter under 26mm/1.02inch-38mm/1.5inch, allowing you to lick your bike with ease.
- Boosted Security & Anti-Theft: Thanks to the zinc alloy lock core and alloy steel lock head, this bike U-lock can withstand hydraulic shear forces up to 12 tons. It‘s tough as nails, resisting cutting, sawing, smashing, and drilling to protect your bike from potential theft.
- Added Convenience and Peace-of-Mind: No more stress of being locked out if you lose your primary key. For extra peace of mind, we’ve included two bike lock keys so that you can carry one and keep the spare at home or in the office, ensuring you won‘t be stranded without access to your bike.
- Wide Applications: Use the bike locks alone or paired with the steel cable--you make the choice! It‘s perfect for securing bicycles, children’s bikes, electric bikes, ladders, barbecue grills, sports equipment, lawnmowers, gates, and more. Make sure to check the size to ensure a perfect fit.
Vary where you park when possible
If you have an alternative, avoid leaving a valuable e-bike in exactly the same public spot every day. PSNI notes that a repeated parking pattern can attract attention. This is a supplementary precaution, not a substitute for locking the bike securely.
Should I take my e-bike battery with me?
Yes, when it is removable and practical to carry. E-bike batteries can be stolen separately from the bike. If you must leave the battery fitted, use the bike’s battery lock and consider a supplemental cable lock; a cable is an extra deterrent, not a replacement for a high-quality primary bike lock. Also take removable displays, lights and other easy-to-carry valuables when practical. See PSNI’s e-bike guidance and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s battery-theft advice.

These are Tokyo battery-theft figures, not a measure of theft at workplaces or a rate that can be generalized to other locations.
What should I record before the commute?
Keep enough information to identify the bike and report it if it is stolen. Before relying on a registry, make sure you can access your records and proof of ownership.

- Record the make, model, colour, frame number, battery serial number if present, and distinctive features.
- Keep proof of purchase and ownership somewhere accessible.
- Register the bike with a recognised bicycle database and consider security marking.
Registration and marking help identify a recovered bike; they do not prevent theft. Police.uk and PSNI recommend recording identifying details and registering a bicycle.
Does bike insurance cover theft from work?
It depends on the policy and where and how the bike was parked. Check the policy wording for cover at work, required lock type or security rating, parking conditions, covered locations, excess and claim requirements. Home contents cover and dedicated cycle insurance may have different terms. No universal workplace-theft coverage rule is established by the police guidance, so confirm the details with your insurer rather than assuming a particular facility or lock qualifies.

What to do if your e-bike is stolen
- Report the theft promptly through your local police process. The reporting method and required details depend on your location.
- Provide the frame number, make, model, colour, photos, distinctive features, registration details, and where and when the bike was parked.
- Update the bike’s registry status and contact your insurer if you have cover, following the policy’s claim requirements.
Police.uk’s bike-safety guidance covers recording and reporting details. Superintendent Phil Mullally of Merseyside Police has encouraged e-bike owners to use measures such as Bike Register, high-quality locks and GPS tracking devices; the statement appeared in a Merseyside Police Operation Gears announcement.
Which security measures do different jobs?
| Measure | What it helps with | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Quality D-lock plus a second different-type lock | Securing the frame and wheels to a fixed stand; adding another obstacle to removal. | Choosing a sound rack and suitable parking location. |
| Battery lock or supplemental cable | Adding security when the removable battery cannot be taken indoors. | A high-quality primary lock securing the bike to the stand. |
| Registration, recorded serials and photos | Providing identifying information for a police report or recovery. | Physical security against theft. |
| Security marking, GPS tracker or tag | Supporting identification or potential recovery. | Locks, secure parking or insurance; check compatibility and any service terms for a tracker. |
| Insurance | Potential financial cover if the policy includes the bike, location and circumstances. | Checking the policy’s conditions, including locks and workplace parking. |
For workplace facilities, check that the stand is fixed, usable with your locks and in a visible area. Do not assume an indoor room is secure without checking its access and physical security. These practical recommendations draw on police guidance in several jurisdictions; facility security and insurance requirements vary locally.
