Marking the converter can help identify it if stolen, but it does not secure the part. Parking changes, a correctly fitted device, and practical alert measures can add layers of protection; none guarantees the vehicle will not be targeted.
Why catalytic converters are targeted
A catalytic converter is part of a vehicle’s exhaust and emissions-control system. It contains precious metals with resale value, and a thief can cut it from underneath a vehicle. Risk varies by vehicle and location: B.C. RCMP guidance identifies SUVs and trucks as common targets because their ground clearance can make access easier, while Police.uk notes that hybrids are often targeted in its UK context. Neither observation means other vehicles are safe.

Start with where and how you park
Reducing easy access is a sensible first step, whether or not you add equipment. Use a locked garage, secure lot, or fenced compound when available. If you must park outdoors, choose a well-lit, visible, busier location, ideally one within camera view. At home, motion-sensing exterior lights may improve visibility. Position the vehicle near a wall, barrier, or other obstruction so there is less room to reach underneath.

Police.uk also advises positioning a vehicle to limit access to its underside and notes that vehicles sitting high above the road may be especially vulnerable. These measures reduce opportunity, but none guarantees that a thief will not act. The reviewed official guidance does not quantify how much protection a particular parking location, camera, or light provides.

Consider a guard made for your vehicle
Protective options named by official guidance include shields or plates, cages, clamps, straps, and locks. These add a physical obstacle; they are not theft-proofing. Ask your vehicle’s dealer, the device manufacturer, or a qualified installer what fits your exact year, make, model, engine or trim, and ground clearance. Confirm the attachment method as well as fit: an unsuitable device may be ineffective or create problems.
Police.uk recommends asking a dealer about manufacturer-approved devices tested to Sold Secure Gold. This is UK-specific advice, not a universal certification requirement. Elsewhere, follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance and local rules.

California has additional emissions-related requirements. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) says a device must not damage or modify the converter or obscure required identifying information, and warns that welding or attaching a device directly to the converter can lead to a Smog Check failure. California replacement converters must meet the applicable OEM or CARB-approved requirements. These instructions apply in California; check the rules where the vehicle is registered.

VIN or license-plate-number engraving or etching can help police or a reputable recycler identify a converter and its owner if it is recovered. It may also deter theft, but it is not a physical barrier and does not guarantee deterrence. Ask local law enforcement or a qualified provider whether marking services or free events are available. The B.C. RCMP recommends etching the last eight VIN digits; follow local advice on what information to mark.

California BAR also discusses bright fluorescent paint as an optional marking layer, with the caution that paint must not cover identifying information. Because a converter is part of the exhaust system, confirm compatibility and local guidance before applying anything to it. Edmonton Police Service’s “Tag Your Cat” engraving program and warning decals are local to Edmonton; availability and any cost should be confirmed directly with the service.

If your vehicle supports it, ask a qualified installer whether its alarm can be calibrated to respond to vibration associated with cutting. Motion-sensitive lighting around a driveway is another measure recommended by official guidance. These are supplementary steps, not substitutes for secure parking or a suitable guard. The cited guidance does not provide comparative effectiveness figures for alarms, lights, or cameras.

If a theft is underway or the converter is missing
- Do not approach or confront suspected thieves. Contact local emergency services and follow police instructions. Use the emergency number for your jurisdiction: B.C. RCMP guidance gives 9-1-1 for an active incident, while Police.uk gives 999 in the UK.
- If you discover the converter is gone, report the theft. Contact your insurer and check your actual policy; coverage depends on its terms.
- Have a qualified repair facility inspect the vehicle. A missing converter can make the vehicle suddenly loud. Do not drive if you are unsure it is safe.
- For a California vehicle, use a compliant replacement. The replacement must meet the requirements for that specific vehicle, including applicable OEM or CARB approval, and should be installed through an appropriate licensed facility.
