If you feel a warm or tender spot, stop and protect it before friction worsens. These steps lower the chance of blisters but cannot guarantee a blister-free walk.
Why boots cause blisters
Blisters commonly form where skin repeatedly rubs against footwear. A boot that is too tight can pinch; one that is too loose can let the foot move and rub. Damp socks can also contribute, and stiff, unfamiliar boots may irritate skin before they have been worn in. REI’s blister-prevention guidance and the American Hiking Society describe these common contributors.

Get the fit right before the walk
Choose boots that feel comfortable and do not rub or pinch. Try them on with the socks you plan to wear, since sock thickness and cushioning affect how the boots fit. If the same area keeps rubbing, reassess the fit rather than relying on a dressing to solve the underlying problem. The REI boot-fitting guide and NHS walking guidance both emphasize comfortable footwear.
Choose socks for comfort and conditions
There is no single sock fiber or arrangement established as best for everyone. Consider how the socks feel inside your boots, including their height, cushioning and fabric, and whether they become sweaty. The NHS recommends thick, moisture-wicking socks for exercise and changing them frequently if your feet become sweaty. Change damp socks when practical, and make sure added cushioning does not make the boots uncomfortably tight.

Break in new boots gradually
Do not make a long walk the first outing in new boots. Wear them for shorter periods and shorter walks, then build up as they become comfortable. If they cause persistent rubbing or pain, stop and reassess the fit instead of assuming more wear will fix it. The NHS exercise guidance recommends introducing new footwear gradually.
Respond to a hot spot early
A warm, tender or irritated area is a cue to stop before continued rubbing turns it into a blister. Check the skin and reduce friction by adjusting the boot or sock if needed. If you can, protect the point with a padded blister bandage, moleskin or tape; athletic tape may also help on an area that is prone to blisters. These are practical options, not guaranteed fixes, so follow the product directions.
