To prevent blisters in new hiking boots, start with a fit that holds your heel without squeezing your forefoot, wear the socks and insoles you plan to hike in, and break the boots in through short outings. Keep feet dry, remove grit or sock wrinkles promptly, and cover a burning or tender hot spot as soon as it appears. If rubbing or pressure persists, the boot’s size or shape may not suit your foot.
Get the fit right before your first hike
Both tightness and excess movement can cause trouble: a boot that presses on the foot creates pressure, while a loose boot lets the foot slide and rub. Try boots on with the hiking socks and insoles you intend to use. If your feet tend to swell during the day, try them on later in the day as well.

Look for a secure heel, room to wiggle your toes, and no pinching, rubbing, or painful pressure across the forefoot. Walk around in the boots and notice whether your heel lifts or your toes strike the front. REI’s boot-fitting guidance recommends checking for heel movement, friction, and toe room rather than relying on the labeled size alone.

You can experiment with lacing if it improves heel hold or eases pressure, but stop if an adjustment creates a new sore spot. Ongoing significant heel slip or forefoot pressure may mean the boot is the wrong size or model; trying another size or shape is more useful than enduring repeated rubbing.

Break in the boots gradually
- Start close to home. Wear the boots with your intended socks and insoles on short walks, and check for rubbing afterward.
- Add time and terrain in stages. Move from short walks to longer outings and then to trails, increasing distance and difficulty gradually.
- Build up pack weight and mileage gradually. A longer, heavier hike puts different demands on your feet than a short walk.
- Reassess pain or hot spots. Persistent pain or a pronounced hot spot is a reason to revisit fit, socks, and lacing before extending the outing.
REI’s boot break-in advice cautions against soaking new boots or forcing a long walk as a shortcut; that can be hard on both boots and feet.
Choose socks that fit the boot
Socks affect both moisture and fit. The cited REI guidance favors well-fitting synthetic or wool socks over cotton because cotton retains moisture. Choose a thickness and cushioning level that works with the boot on your foot: thick socks can make footwear too tight, while loose fabric can slide, bunch, or wrinkle.

A liner sock is an option to try, not a guaranteed fix. REI notes that liners do not necessarily prevent blisters and that footwear fit is the more important factor. For a fuller explanation of materials and fit, see REI’s hiking sock guidance.

Keep feet dry and boots clear of grit
- Carry a dry pair of socks on long outings or in wet conditions, and change when your socks become soaked.
- If your feet feel damp, stop to dry them and change socks rather than continuing in wet fabric.
- Check inside the boots for grit when you take them off; even a small piece can rub repeatedly.
- Keep toenails trimmed so they are less likely to press or rub against the front of the boot.
These practical steps are also recommended in American Hiking Society’s blister-prevention advice. No sock, powder, tape, or dressing is established by these sources as a guaranteed way to prevent blisters; fit, boot construction, foot shape, trail conditions, and moisture all matter.

Respond to a hot spot immediately
A burning or tender patch is an early warning, not something to walk through. Stop and take off your boot and sock. Dry the skin, check for grit and wrinkles, and adjust the lacing if that helps without creating pressure elsewhere. Cover the rubbing area with a product suitable for intact skin, such as medical tape or a blister bandage. Moleskin or blister padding can cushion around an irritated area.
Keeping paper medical tape, blister bandages, or moleskin in a first-aid kit can be useful if you know where your boots tend to rub. These supplies can protect a hot spot, but they do not correct a persistently poor fit.

If a blister has already formed
For an intact blister, Mayo Clinic recommends draining it only when needed for pain relief and leaving the skin covering it in place. Follow Mayo Clinic’s blister first-aid instructions rather than improvising.
Seek medical care if the surrounding skin becomes increasingly warm or painful, changes color in a spreading area, or develops pus, as these can be signs of infection. If you have diabetes, neuropathy, circulation problems, or another high-risk foot condition, get individualized clinical advice about any foot wound.
