To reduce harm to bees and other beneficial insects, use a trap and lure tested for the exact beetle species you need to monitor, and follow that study’s color and placement—not a generic “bee-safe” rule. If you are trapping Japanese beetles in a home garden, University of Minnesota Extension advises against traps: they may attract more beetles to the yard than they catch.
Why beetle traps catch other insects
A trap’s selectivity depends on the target beetle, the lure, the trap’s color and form, and where it is placed. A floral odor or visual cue can attract insects besides the target. Studies have found that changing lure chemistry or trap color can affect captures of bees, lady beetles, and non-target moths. No single color, lure, height, or service interval is established as right for every beetle trap.

Before choosing a trap, identify the beetle species and decide whether your goal is to detect its presence or reduce its numbers. A configuration that limits bycatch for one species in one setting may not work the same way elsewhere.

Monitoring is different from population reduction
Monitoring traps help detect and identify pests so that control decisions can be targeted. The UK Health and Safety Executive distinguishes traps used solely for monitoring from traps intended for population reduction, control, or mass trapping. This is UK guidance; it does not establish legal requirements in other jurisdictions. See the HSE guidance on monitoring.
#1 Best Overall
- Effectively eliminate most flying insects: Mosquito, Aedes, gnats, midges, flies, fruit flies, house flies, horse flies, moths, wasps, etc. Please use this exterminator at night and in the dark.
- EPA Registered: The bulb light attracts flying insects, and the high-voltage electric grid zaps them on contact. Efficient physical mosquito control. So you don't have to put up with the smell of sprays, insecticides and attractants. You also don't have to worry about your pets eating insects that have been killed by pesticides.
- Easy to use & Light weight : It’s very light so you can hang it everywhere you like. No warm up, Starts working when plugged in.
- Replaceable bulb & Easy to clean : Dead bugs will fall onto the tray, you just need to clean the tray with brush provided. 15W Bulb is replaceable. If your bulb becomes less effective at attracting flying insects, you can replace it.
- Area Coverage up to 1/2 Acre. Good for home, patio, balcony, courtyard, front porch, garden, pergola, deck, backyard, camping, swimming pool, garage, farm, etc.
If you only need to know whether a pest is present, consider whether a trap that captures many insects is necessary. Choose a species-specific system where evidence exists, and inspect what it catches so you can identify unwanted captures.
Compare the full trap system
- Target specificity: Check whether the lure is designed for the beetle species or relies on a broad floral odor or visual attraction.
- Bycatch evidence: Look for tests of the same trap, lure, color, and placement that measured bees, predators, or other non-target insects.
- Trap form and placement: A pitfall, bucket, or aerial trap presents different risks. Match the tested height and setting as closely as possible.
- Intended use: A monitoring device and a mass-trapping device have different goals and may have different consequences for non-target insects.
What studies show about color and lure
Hoplia equina: a species-specific bucket-trap result
USDA Agricultural Research Service research on Hoplia equina in Massachusetts found that trap color affected non-target captures, including pollinators, even though the tested colors did not significantly affect target capture. The agency describes a green bucket trap with its opening 20 cm above the ground, green or red baffles, and 600 micrograms of 2-tetradecanone as the optimal tested design for high H. equina capture, low non-target capture, and a low failure rate. These are experimental settings for that species and study, not a general recipe for beetle traps. See the USDA ARS study summary.

When it’s time to clean, just twist off the tray, dump the contents into the trash, and rinse with water. No special tools, no messy scraping, no dead bug residue stuck to your hands. The detachable tray design makes cleanup effortless – so you can spend less time maintaining your trap and more time enjoying your backyard.
Japanese beetles: all-green traps and a modified lure
A 2019 study abstract reports that removing geraniol from a floral lure blend reduced bee capture in Rhode Island in 2017 and 2018 without significantly reducing Japanese beetle captures in Rhode Island and Ohio. In some tested settings, all-green traps caught significantly fewer bees than clear traps or standard traps with yellow vanes and green cages; Japanese beetle captures did not significantly differ among the compared colors. The study concludes that an all-green trap using eugenol and PEP plus the female-produced sex pheromone can capture Japanese beetles while minimizing bee bycatch. Those findings apply to the tested setups; a trap sold as “green” is not automatically equivalent. See the 2019 study abstract.

A USDA ARS study in corn and alfalfa fields found significant effects of lure and trap color on captures of bees, lady beetles, and non-target moths. The researchers also noted that more work was needed to understand lure specificity and color effects. The practical lesson is to look for evidence on the exact configuration rather than assume a change that helped in one test will transfer to another crop, location, or beetle. For Japanese beetles in a home garden, consider not using a trap
University of Minnesota Extension says Japanese beetle traps are not effective for protecting home-garden plants and may attract more insects to the yard. They use a synthetic female sex pheromone and a strong floral odor to attract beetles. The extension recommends hand removal and notes that physical barriers can protect some plants; do not leave barriers over blooming plants that need pollination. Read the University of Minnesota Extension guidance on Japanese beetles.

If you are using a pitfall trap, UF/IFAS recommends setting its top slightly above the ground surface to reduce the risk of collecting ground beetles, spiders, and other beneficial predators. This is guidance for pitfall placement, not a general height rule for bucket or aerial traps. See the UF/IFAS guidance on scarab beetle traps.

Check catches and adjust only within the evidence
- Identify the target and trap type. Confirm the beetle species and whether the device is a pitfall, bucket, or aerial trap.
- Choose a species-specific lure and configuration where available. Follow the tested or labeled color, placement, and lure for that target; do not assume a color alone makes a trap selective.
- Inspect the catch regularly. Note whether bees, predators, or other non-target insects are being caught, and follow the trap’s own instructions for servicing.
- Reconsider the method if bycatch continues. If the trap is catching unwanted insects or is not needed for monitoring, stop using it or seek species-specific guidance. For Japanese beetles in a home garden, consider hand removal or suitable physical barriers instead.
