There is no safe universal wait interval: the right setting depends on the service and endpoint.
How to recognize an API rate limit
When a request exceeds a service’s limit, the n8n node errors and displays the service’s response message. HTTP 429 Too Many Requests is the standard signal that the client has sent too many requests in a given period. Check the node’s execution output and the API’s response details to confirm what happened.

Rate limits can apply to request frequency, but APIs may also restrict how much data a request can send or a response can return. Those are different constraints and may need different fixes.

Consult the API documentation for the specific service and endpoint before setting a delay or batch size. Limits differ: the documentation may describe a maximum number of requests per time window, or impose other conditions. The n8n documentation gives one request per second as an example and pairs it with a 1000 ms wait; that is an illustration, not a setting that works for every API.

Also check how the service expects clients to respond when a quota is exceeded. n8n’s retry settings let you configure a wait between tries, but the available documentation does not establish that the setting automatically follows server-specific instructions such as a Retry-After header. Do not assume that retries alone satisfy an API’s rules.
Retry a failed request with Retry On Fail
For a request that should be attempted again after an error, enable Retry On Fail in the node’s Settings and configure the wait between tries. Set the delay according to the target API’s published limits. In n8n’s one-request-per-second example, a 1000 ms wait creates a one-second pause between attempts.
Rank #2
This is a recovery option for failed requests; it does not necessarily pace every item in a workflow before an error occurs. If you need deliberate control over the stream of requests, use a pacing pattern instead.

Pace requests across input items
Loop Over Items with Wait
Use Loop Over Items to process incoming items in batches, place a Wait node in the loop to create the required pause, and connect the flow back into the loop. Configure the batch handling and delay to fit the API’s documented quota. This approach makes the pacing explicit in the workflow.
HTTP Request batching
For the HTTP Request node, open Add Option > Batching and set Items per Batch and Batch Interval (ms). n8n describes this as equivalent to using Loop Over Items with Wait. Choose values based on the endpoint’s rules; n8n does not prescribe a universal batch size or interval.
Use pagination for large result sets
If the API splits a large result set across multiple responses, configure pagination in the HTTP Request node according to that API’s pagination scheme. Pagination retrieves results across pages; it does not, by itself, slow requests enough to meet a frequency quota. If the API has both pagination and request-frequency limits, configure pagination and pacing for their separate purposes.
Rank #4
Verify the workflow against the service’s rules
After configuring retries or pacing, inspect execution output to see whether requests still receive rate-limit errors. Adjust the delay or batch settings in line with the API’s current documentation and observed responses. The applicable quota and behavior can depend on the service and endpoint, so verify those details rather than treating one successful run as a universal configuration.
For n8n’s guidance on handling rate limits, see the official documentation. UI labels may vary by installed n8n version.
