If your phone gets wet, disconnect it from power, turn it off if it is on, and let it dry in a cool, ventilated place. Do not charge through a wet port, use heat or compressed air, or put the phone in rice. If it was submerged, exposed to dirty or corrosive liquid, or develops problems, arrange a qualified inspection; drying the outside cannot confirm that the inside is safe.
What to do immediately when a phone gets wet
- Put safety first. Retrieve the phone only if you can do so safely. If it is connected to mains power, or is hot, smoking, swelling, bubbling, or melting, do not handle it; move away and seek appropriate emergency help.
- Disconnect power and accessories. Unplug cables and accessories. Do not connect a charger through the port until the phone, port, and cable ends are completely dry. Apple warns that charging with a wet connector can corrode its pins and cause permanent damage (Apple’s liquid-detection alert guidance).
- Turn it off. If the phone is on, power it down. If it is already off, leave it off; powering it up to check whether it works can expose wet components to electricity. Samsung’s instructions for non-water-resistant devices and iFixit’s iPhone repair guidance both emphasize powering down after liquid exposure (Samsung water-exposure guidance; iFixit’s iPhone liquid-damage guide).
- Remove only easy-to-remove items. Take off the case and, if the model’s instructions permit it, remove the SIM tray. Do not open a sealed phone or force out parts.
- Dry the exterior gently. Wipe it with a soft, clean cloth. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model and liquid involved.
- Leave it to air-dry. Put the phone in a cool, dry place with airflow. Do not use it or reconnect accessories while it is drying.
If the liquid was seawater, a sugary drink, soapy water, or another dirty or corrosive fluid, do not assume that drying alone will prevent corrosion. Arrange professional inspection.

How to dry a wet charging port
For an iPhone showing a liquid alert
Apple’s instructions are specific to iPhone and should not be treated as a universal timing rule for every phone. Unplug both ends of the cable, hold the iPhone with its connector facing down, and gently tap it against your hand to remove excess liquid. Leave it in a dry place with airflow. After at least 30 minutes, you can try reconnecting; if the alert returns, leave it to dry longer. Apple says it can take up to 24 hours for the connector to dry fully (Apple Support).

For a Galaxy with a moisture warning
Samsung advises unplugging the device, wiping it, gently shaking it with the port facing down, and leaving it in a ventilated area; a fan may help. Avoid forceful shaking and do not charge it until it is fully dry. Check the current support instructions for your exact model, since steps depend on whether the device is water-resistant and what liquid reached it (Samsung’s water-exposure guidance).
What not to do
- Do not charge through a wet port. Wait until the phone, port, and cable are completely dry.
- Do not apply heat. Avoid hair dryers, heaters, ovens, and direct sunlight. Apple and Samsung warn against external heat.
- Do not use compressed air. It can force moisture farther into the device.
- Do not put the phone in rice. Rice does not establish that internal moisture is gone, and particles can enter openings.
- Do not poke or wipe inside the port. Cotton swabs, paper towels, and other objects can damage the connector.
- Do not open a sealed device unless you are equipped for model-specific repair. Liquid-damage work can involve delicate connectors and battery hazards.
Can you use wireless charging while the port dries?
Only if the phone supports wireless charging and its exterior, especially the back, is dry. Apple and Samsung describe wireless charging as an option while a connector dries (Apple; Samsung). It is not a repair for internal liquid damage. If the phone was submerged, exposed to a corrosive liquid, or is behaving abnormally, seek inspection rather than using wireless charging to test it.

Does water resistance mean the phone is safe?
No. Water resistance depends on the model and exposure conditions; it is not a guarantee against every spill, submersion, or kind of liquid. Apple says resistance can decline with normal wear, and advises avoiding swimming or bathing with an iPhone, pressurized or high-velocity water, saunas and steam rooms, intentional submersion, and use outside recommended temperature or in extremely humid conditions (Apple’s guidance on splash, water, and dust resistance).
Samsung likewise says to consider the Galaxy model’s water-resistance capability, liquid type, and exposure conditions. Internal damage or corrosion can occur even if a Galaxy appears to work normally after exposure (Samsung Support). A water-resistance rating should not be treated as protection against age, impact, or all liquids.

When to get the phone inspected
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider if the phone was submerged, exposed to dirty or corrosive liquid, or continues to have charging, display, sound, or power problems. Samsung recommends service-center inspection after water exposure, including when the device appears to function normally. Apple advises contacting Apple or an authorized provider if liquid exposure is suspected and the iPhone has an issue (Samsung; Apple).
Do not rely on an apparently dry exterior or a phone that still turns on as proof that there is no internal corrosion. If the data matters, tell the service provider before authorizing work. iFixit describes liquid-damage repair as challenging and advises people who are unsure or need important data to consider professional help before disassembly (iFixit repair guide).

Should you try a do-it-yourself repair?
Basic exterior drying is a reasonable first response; opening and cleaning a phone is a different level of repair. iFixit’s iPhone guide involves disassembly, high-concentration isopropyl alcohol, and careful work around batteries and delicate connectors. Those procedures are not a general first-aid method and should not be applied to a different model without suitable repair knowledge and model-specific instructions. There is no established universal success rate or cost comparison for home repair versus professional service.

Will the warranty cover liquid damage?
Coverage depends on the manufacturer, plan, and jurisdiction. Apple Canada says liquid damage is not covered under its One-Year Limited Warranty, while noting that consumer-law rights may apply (Apple Canada warranty terms). That statement does not establish coverage for other brands, protection plans, or countries.

How to reduce the risk of future water damage
- Keep the phone away from baths, pools, saunas, steam rooms, and pressurized water, even if its model is described as water-resistant.
- Do not deliberately submerge it or assume an older or previously damaged phone retains its original resistance.
