What’s actually slowing this PC down?

On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts, then set the plugged-in sleep timeout to Never or longer than your planned broadcast. The screen can turn off separately without putting the PC to sleep. If you are using a laptop, check its plugged-in lid-close action too.
That prevents Windows idle sleep; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Your player or encoder, internet connection, power, and cooling still matter.

Keep Windows awake while the PC is plugged in
- Connect the PC to power. A long broadcast can drain a laptop battery, and Windows has separate power behavior for plugged-in and battery use.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Under the plugged-in options, set Make my device sleep after to Never, or choose a duration longer than the stream. Microsoft documents this path for Windows 11; wording and available controls can differ by version, device, and management policy. Microsoft’s Windows power and sleep settings guidance explains the controls.
- Choose the screen timeout independently. The display may turn off while the PC remains awake. Set Turn off my screen after according to whether you want the display lit; it is not the same as the sleep timeout.
- For a laptop, check lid-close behavior. Search Windows for Choose what closing the lid does or open the related Power Options control, then inspect the plugged-in action. If the stream must continue with the lid shut, choose an action that does not put the PC to sleep. Do not run a closed-lid laptop unless its cooling and manufacturer guidance allow it; blocked ventilation can cause overheating.
Microsoft notes that sleep uses little power and lets a PC resume quickly. For a broadcast that must continue unattended, however, a sleep timeout of Never trades that convenience for continuous operation. Restore your preferred timeout when the long run is over.

On Windows 10, the older route is Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. In Power Options, select the active plan’s sleep settings and check the lid controls if applicable. Microsoft’s power-mode information says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so this is a legacy route rather than a current generally supported Windows version: Microsoft’s power-mode guidance.

- SILENT & ULTRA-SLIM DESIGN: The low-noise motor runs quietly in the background, while the ultra-slim profile fits neatly into home offices and desktop setups without taking up unnecessary workspace
- 4.9 FT USB-A TO C CABLE: The included 1.5m cable gives you more flexibility to position the mouse mover where it works best. Route it neatly around laptops, monitors and other desk equipment for a cleaner setup
If the setting is missing, unavailable, or reverts, the PC may be managed by an organization or its hardware vendor may expose power controls differently. Ask the administrator or consult the device maker rather than assuming the broadcast software caused it.
Check the 4K60 encoder settings separately
Preventing sleep keeps Windows from suspending an idle PC; it does not configure YouTube ingestion. In the encoder you use, verify the stream URL and private stream key, then choose settings compatible with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address: keep it secret, and regenerate it if exposed. YouTube also transcodes live streams for viewers on different devices and connections.

| Video setting for 2160p at 60 fps | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s encoder-ingest bitrate guidance, not a promise that a connection with the same upload speed will be reliable. Leave headroom for network variation and other household or office traffic. YouTube’s guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS, CBR bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). It allows H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The cited guidance says 4K streams use normal latency; low latency is unavailable for 4K. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for its current recommendations.

Make sure the video actually loops and test the full path
The Windows sleep setting does not make a video repeat. Turn on looping in the player or configure the playlist in the encoder or streaming application you actually use; the exact controls depend on that app. The title alone does not establish a particular player or encoder workflow, so verify its own documentation and confirm the source returns to the beginning without ending the live event.

- Prepare the encoder with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, stream URL, and stream key.
- Start a private or unlisted test event and check that YouTube receives the expected video and audio. Use footage with motion and sound similar to the planned loop.
- Confirm the player or playlist repeats the video and that the live event stays active across a loop boundary.
- Watch YouTube’s preview and stream health during the test, then monitor stream health during the public broadcast. YouTube advises testing before going live and checking stream health: encoder settings and live streaming setup.
A long-running loop also needs content you have the right to use. Check music, footage, and other material against YouTube’s copyright rules and your permissions; continuous repetition does not itself establish those rights. Avoid assuming that a technically valid loop will necessarily satisfy YouTube’s policies on reused content or monetization.
When the stream stops even though the PC stayed awake
- The whole PC suspended: Recheck the plugged-in sleep timeout and laptop lid action. If settings are controlled by an organization, ask its administrator.
- YouTube loses the incoming stream: Check encoder status, the connection, and stream health. Verify that the stream key and URL are correct and that the encoder is still sending.
- The live feed ends at the end of a clip: The sleep setting is not a loop control. Check the player’s repeat option or playlist behavior and test the transition before the public run.
- Video quality drops or buffering appears: Compare the encoder’s bitrate and codec with YouTube’s guidance, then test the connection under realistic conditions. The listed bitrate is not a required ISP speed or a guarantee of delivery.
- A laptop overheats or throttles: Reopen the lid if needed, improve ventilation, and follow the manufacturer’s operating guidance. Disabling sleep cannot solve a thermal problem.
- YouTube drops the stream and the encoder does not recover: Treat recovery as an encoder or streaming-service behavior, not a Windows sleep setting; check the tool’s documentation and reconnect procedure.
