To smooth your lengths without flattening your roots, start with detangled hair, work in narrow sections, and bring the brush close enough to the roots to lift each section as you style. Follow your exact brush’s manual for how damp your hair should be: instructions vary by model, so there is no single preparation level that fits every hot air brush.
Why roots stay flat while the lengths smooth
The brush may be reaching the lengths more effectively than the root area. A section that is too thick, or an attachment held too far from the scalp, can keep airflow or contact from reaching the roots consistently. Smartwares Group identifies section size and brush position as possible causes of flat roots and roots that look less smooth than the ends (flat roots; ends smoother than roots).

Frizz has other possible contributors. Wella Professionals explains that dry or porous strands may absorb humidity unevenly, while heat and rough handling can contribute to a roughened hair surface. A careful routine may help manage these factors, but no one technique can be promised to eliminate frizz for every hair type (Wella’s frizz guidance).

A routine for smoother lengths and lifted roots
- Detangle and section. Start with detangled hair, then divide it into sections small enough for the brush or airflow to reach consistently. If the roots stay flat, make the sections narrower before changing products or adding more heat. BaBylissPRO’s brush instructions also recommend sectioning and detangling.
- Use the dampness level specified for your model. BaBylissPRO manuals do not give one universal preparation instruction: one describes towel-dried hair, while another advises drying hair to about 80% before styling. Check the manual for your exact appliance rather than assuming either instruction applies to all brushes (Nano Titanium Oval Ionic Hot Air Brush manual; BaBylissPRO Hot Air Brush manual).
- Place the brush near the roots and lift. Work close to the root area, directing the section upward or away from the scalp as you style. BaBylissPRO’s Oval Ionic Hot Air Brush instructions say: “For added root lift, hold the brush in place at the roots for a few seconds.” Keep contact brief and use only the heat setting and method allowed by your appliance’s instructions.
- Dry the roots thoroughly before moving on. If the ends look finished but the roots do not, adjust the section and brush position so the root area receives attention too. Avoid repeatedly passing over already-styled lengths just to address an area the brush is not reaching well.
- Use heat protectant according to its label. Check whether your product is meant for damp or dry hair, then apply and distribute it as directed without oversaturating. Labels differ, so do not assume all protectants are used the same way (L’Oréal Paris heat-protectant guidance).
- Keep heavy smoothing products away from the roots if they make hair limp. Wella advises using lightweight moisture and concentrating smoothing products on the mid-lengths and ends rather than the root area. This can help avoid weighing down roots that already tend to fall flat.
Adjust the routine without adding unnecessary heat
If a section still looks frizzy or uneven, first check whether it was too wide, whether the brush reached close to the roots, and whether you followed the correct dampness guidance for your model. TRESemmé recommends using only as much heat as needed, working in small sections, and avoiding repeated passes. That is brand guidance, not independent proof that a particular routine or product will produce a specific result (TRESemmé heat-protection guidance).

Check the attachment if only one part of the brush is underperforming
If one attachment performs poorly, check that it is seated properly, clean, and aligned, following the appliance manual. Stop using the brush if an attachment will not stay secure or if the appliance heats unpredictably; do not try to compensate by pressing harder or holding it against the hair longer.
What to compare if you are choosing a hot air brush
