To preserve quality, loop the original file in OBS, match the stream output to the resolution and frame rate the file can genuinely support, and set the live encoder to YouTube’s recommended settings for its codec. Keep the outgoing bitrate within a stable upload connection, test the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and check the result on another device before leaving it running.
What affects quality in a looped live stream?
Looping a file does not, by itself, degrade it. The result viewers see depends on the source file, the encoder’s output settings, the network carrying the stream to YouTube, and YouTube’s processing for playback. A higher bitrate cannot restore detail missing from the source, and setting an output resolution above the source’s real resolution does not create genuine detail.

YouTube transcodes incoming streams into formats for playback on different devices. That helps with delivery compatibility; it does not undo poor source encoding, unsuitable scaling, or interruptions in the connection. Use YouTube’s live encoder settings for the stream sent to YouTube, not its separate video upload encoding recommendations.

Set up a file or playlist loop in OBS
- Check the source. Play the file from beginning to end and confirm its picture and audio are correct. Make sure you have the rights to stream both. If the file has black frames, clipped audio, or a visible pause at its end, an OBS loop will not fix those issues.
- Add a single file. In OBS, add a Media Source, choose the local video file, and enable Loop. OBS documents this control as specifying whether the file plays again after playback has completed. Check framing and sound in the OBS preview. The OBS Media Sources guide documents the loop setting but does not promise that the transition at the file boundary will be seamless.
- Add a playlist, if needed. Add a VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, and ensure VLC is installed. Confirm the playlist order and preview the transitions before streaming. OBS lists itself as free, open-source software in YouTube’s encoder directory.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. Create or select a YouTube live stream, then enter the stream’s server URL and stream key in OBS. The key tells the encoder where to send its feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
Choose output settings that suit the source
Resolution and frame rate
Set OBS output to a resolution and frame rate the source can genuinely provide. A 1080p30 file is not improved by sending it as 1080p60; that only increases the output workload without adding real motion detail. Avoid unnecessary upscaling. For SDR workflows, YouTube specifies progressive scan, square pixels, and Rec. 709; check the current live settings page for the codec and protocol you select.

Codec and bitrate
YouTube’s live guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Select a bitrate for the actual ingest codec, output resolution, and frame rate rather than copying the file’s bitrate. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees of a particular perceived image quality.
| H.264 live output example | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 live encoding; the page does not show a publication date. AV1 and H.265/HEVC have different recommended values, so consult YouTube’s live bitrate table rather than applying the H.264 numbers to those codecs.

- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Do not confuse live ingest with a prerecorded upload. For H.264 SDR uploads, YouTube lists 8 Mbps for 1080p at a standard frame rate and 12 Mbps at a high frame rate; its live H.264 recommendations for the 1080p30 and 1080p60 examples above are 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps. The two workflows have distinct guidance.
Rate control, keyframes, and audio
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS as YouTube recommends.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use a frame rate up to 60 fps if the source and setup support it.
- For audio, use a format YouTube specifies for the chosen setup, such as AAC or MP3, and check the audio in the preview.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted version of RTMP. Its guidance says resolution and frame rate are detected automatically by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key.
Make sure the connection can carry the stream
The encoder needs sustained upload capacity for the complete stream bitrate, including audio. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload headroom and says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. If the upload fluctuates or the network drops, a carefully chosen encoder bitrate cannot prevent interruptions.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the planned stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Choose a stream bitrate that remains sustainable, with the recommended headroom, rather than aiming for the fastest brief result.
- If the local wireless link is unreliable, try a wired connection. Ethernet can improve the reliability of the link between the computer and router; it does not increase the internet service’s available upload bandwidth.
Test quality before leaving the stream unattended
- Start a test with movement and audio representative of the real file; a static opening frame may conceal problems that appear later.
- Inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Check for warnings, buffering, unexpected scaling, missing audio, or dropped frames.
- Open the watch page on another device, including a phone, and confirm the stream is reachable and looks and sounds right there.
- Monitor the stream over time, not only at startup. A connection that works for a short test may still be unstable over a long run.
If buffering occurs for viewers, review both connection stability and latency. YouTube notes that lower latency can mean more playback buffering. DVR can let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream, but it does not improve image fidelity.
Troubleshoot common quality problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Soft or blocky image | Source quality, scaling, codec, or bitrate | Check the original file first; match output resolution and frame rate to it, then confirm the bitrate against YouTube’s live chart for the chosen codec. |
| Buffering or stream interruptions | Upload capacity, local network, or too little headroom | Test sustained upload, leave 20% headroom, and try wired networking if the local wireless link is unreliable. |
| Motion looks poor despite a high bitrate | Frame rate mismatch or source limitations | Use the source’s actual frame rate and avoid assuming a higher bitrate or upscaled output will add missing detail. |
| Picture works but audio is absent or wrong | Source audio, OBS source settings, or encoder audio format | Check the OBS preview and test the complete source; use an audio format compatible with YouTube’s guidance for the selected setup. |
| The loop boundary has a pause or pop | End and beginning of the file | Inspect the source’s final and first frames and audio. OBS’s loop control repeats playback but does not guarantee a seamless join. |
| Viewer playback buffers at low latency | Latency setting and viewers’ network conditions | Review the latency choice in YouTube live settings; lower latency may increase buffering. DVR affects viewer controls, not image quality. |
