How to Preserve and Digitize Old Video Game Media Without Damaging It

Protect the original first, then capture it with hardware matched to its exact carrier and platform. This guide covers safe handling, cleaning, floppy imaging, cartridge risks, optical-disc copying, metadata, backups, storage, and when to use a professional.

The safest way to preserve an old game is to separate three jobs: protect the physical original, capture its data with hardware made for its exact carrier and platform, and create a convenient copy for access. Identify the game, console or computer, carrier, physical condition, and your goal before connecting anything. A cartridge, floppy disk, and optical disc have different failure risks and require different readers; no universal capture device can safely handle every vintage format.

Start by identifying exactly what you own

Write down the title, platform, edition or revision markings, publisher, language, and any date or catalog information you can establish. Record whether the item is a cartridge, floppy disk, optical disc, or another carrier. Note the condition of the media, case, label, packaging, manual, inserts, maps, registration cards, and other associated material.

The platform matters as much as the carrier. A game may depend on a proprietary console, handheld, computer, controller, firmware behavior, copy-protection scheme, or operating environment. The Library of Congress describes game releases as including cartridges and disc- or disk-based media, together with documentation and related materials. For preservation, retain the platform context rather than treating the game file as an isolated object.

Decide what “digitize” means for your project:

  • Physical preservation: reduce handling, contamination, heat, humidity, magnetic exposure, and other threats to the original.
  • Software capture: make a faithful image or file set from the carrier.
  • Gameplay recording: capture video or audio while the game runs. This documents play but does not replace a software dump.

A capture device suitable for one console or carrier does not establish a safe workflow for another. Confirm compatibility with the exact system, media size, encoding, and any documented exceptions before inserting an original.

How do I preserve old video games without damaging them?

Prepare a clean, low-risk workspace

  • Wash and thoroughly dry your hands before handling media. Handle discs by the outer edge and center hole, floppy disks by their edges and protective shell, and cartridges by the casing.
  • Use a clean, stable, uncluttered work surface. Keep food, drinks, smoke, dust-producing work, and liquids away from the media.
  • Gather the compatible reader, maintained playback hardware, storage media, labels or notes, and documentation before opening the package.
  • Minimize unnecessary insertions, removals, and test plays. Each cycle adds mechanical or electrical risk to an old carrier.

Do not force a brittle case, flex a disc, open a floppy shell, or pry at a cartridge simply to inspect it. If the item is cracked, warped, shedding material, moldy, badly contaminated, corroded, or otherwise suspect, pause before playback or cleaning. A trained preservation or digitization provider is safer than experimenting with valuable or unique media.

Institutional collections illustrate the scale of the problem: in 2020, the Library of Congress said its National Audio-Visual Conservation Center held more than 5,000 videogames acquired through copyright deposit and private donation, ranging from 5.25-inch floppy disks to modern console cartridges, with packaging and documentation. That dated figure is a collection description, not a current census or a prediction of how many privately owned games remain readable.

Optical discs: handling, cleaning, and copying

Handle the data surface as untouchable

Use the Library of Congress rule: “Handle optical discs (CDs, DVDs) by the edge and center hole only.” Finger oils, dust, and scratches can interfere with reading. Never bend a disc to remove it from a tight case; release the hub and lift it vertically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I clean an old game disc before backing it up?

Clean only when visible contamination is the problem and the disc is otherwise stable. For fingerprints or light dust, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recommends a dry, lint-free soft cloth. Wipe in straight strokes from the center toward the outer edge, not in a circle. If necessary, use a small amount of distilled or deionized water, then let the disc dry completely before storage or playback.

Do not apply adhesive labels or reposition one already attached. Do not assume polishing will repair a serious defect. NARA states that no holdings-maintenance procedure can correct scratches deep enough to affect readability. Cracks, delamination-like damage, warping, or a disc that is flaking or separating warrant specialist assessment rather than repeated retries.

Can I copy a game disc without scratching it?

You can reduce risk, but a copy is never guaranteed. Use a compatible, well-maintained optical drive, clean the disc only as described above, and avoid repeated attempts on a damaged original. Confirm that the drive and software support the disc format and the particular platform’s exceptions; a generic USB optical drive is not proof that every console disc can be captured correctly.

Once a read begins, record the drive, software, date, settings, and any read errors. Preserve the first successful capture unchanged. If the drive reports errors, stop and assess whether another documented drive or a professional service is appropriate instead of repeatedly stressing the disc.

Store discs upright

Keep each disc in an individual case, preferably a polypropylene case where available, and store cases upright so the disc is not resting under uneven pressure. Choose a cool, relatively dry, stable household location away from sunlight, heat sources, leaks, dust, and rapid environmental swings. Institutional temperature and humidity specifications should not be treated as universal home prescriptions.

Floppy disks: specialist imaging and fragile magnetic media

Protect the shell and magnetic layer

Hold a floppy disk by its edges and never open the shell. Keep it away from strong magnetic fields, direct sunlight, dust, extreme temperature, and high or fluctuating humidity. Store disks upright in protective enclosures. Do not insert a disk into an unknown, dirty, or poorly maintained drive.

Legacy magnetic media have varied life expectancies, and the availability of working playback equipment is itself a preservation constraint. NARA recommends copying legacy magnetic content into current storage as soon as possible. That urgency does not justify risky experimentation: a failing disk or drive can make a single pass destructive.

What device do I need to dump an old floppy game?

A conventional file copy is not necessarily a preservation capture. Floppy games may use unusual sectors, weak signals, copy protection, or formats that an ordinary computer drive does not represent faithfully. The Game Preservation Society describes forensic preservation approaches, while KryoFlux describes USB hardware for low-level floppy reads. Such equipment is specialist and format-dependent, not a beginner guarantee that every 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch game will work.

Before buying or connecting hardware, identify the disk size, computer family, encoding, operating system, and protection method. Verify that the imaging hardware, drive mechanism, and software support that combination. If the disk is moldy, physically damaged, shedding, or irreplaceable, consult a provider experienced with legacy magnetic media.

Do not transfer tape-cleaning recipes to disks

NARA’s detailed warnings about repeated playback and delicate cleaning are written for magnetic audio and video tape. They support a general caution about fragile legacy media, but they are not a floppy-disk cleaning procedure. Do not apply a tape-specific solvent, lubricant, or shell-opening method to a floppy disk.

Cartridges: preserve the shell, contacts, and platform context

Why cartridge capture is platform-specific

A cartridge is both an artifact and an electronic storage device. Its shell protects a circuit board, memory chips, contacts, and sometimes additional hardware. Different console families use different electrical interfaces, memory mappings, save systems, and security behavior. The reviewed institutional guidance does not establish a universal cartridge reader or a cartridge-specific cleaning chemical.

Identify the exact console, cartridge revision, region, and any modifications. Use a compatible, documented reader or a specialist service for that system. Verify the result against authoritative documentation and retain error information. Do not infer that a generic USB adapter, a reader for another console generation, or a gameplay capture device can dump the cartridge correctly.

  • Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

Safe cartridge handling

  • Hold the casing, not the edge connector or exposed openings.
  • Keep fingers, dust, and loose debris away from contacts and slots.
  • Do not open a cartridge, use abrasive contact cleaning, apply liquids, or insert a corroded, cracked, or modified cartridge into valuable hardware without format-specific guidance.
  • Stop if the shell is swollen, cracked, contaminated, or difficult to insert or remove.

If no documented reader is available, a preservation professional may be less expensive than replacing a damaged original or console. There is no supported general-purpose cartridge workflow that can be recommended for every vintage platform.

A damage-minimizing capture workflow

  1. Document before touching the media. Record title, platform, edition or revision, publisher, language, markings, condition, packaging, manuals, inserts, and related materials. Photographing the item and packaging is a useful addition, but no single photography protocol is required by the preservation guidance.
  2. Inspect and assess risk. Look for dirt, cracks, warping, mold, corrosion, delamination, shedding, brittle plastic, or an obsolete drive or console. If the condition or equipment is uncertain, pause and seek trained help.
  3. Match the reader to the carrier and platform. Use specialist low-level imaging hardware for supported floppy formats, a compatible optical drive for the exact disc type and platform, or an exact-system cartridge reader. Do not assume one reader handles all formats.
  4. Make the first capture conservatively. Avoid modifying the original. Record the device, software, version where available, date, settings, media identification, and every read or verification error.
  5. Protect the preservation capture. Keep an unmodified image or file set where the workflow permits. Calculate and record a checksum so later copies can be checked for accidental change.
  6. Create a separate access copy. Use a convenient copy for play, review, or emulation while retaining the preservation capture unchanged. NARA defines a preservation copy for video as a high-quality duplicate of the original record and distinguishes it from a lower-bitrate, compressed access copy; apply that preservation-versus-access distinction to game files without assuming a specific game image format.
  7. Make an independent backup. Keep a second copy on separate storage. An external hard drive for game backups can serve as storage or delivery media, but it is not capture hardware, does not replace the original, and has no guaranteed archival lifetime merely because it is external.
  8. Retain the platform context. Preserve information about the console or computer, controllers, power supply, operating environment, manuals, packaging, and other dependencies. The Library of Congress notes that an emulated platform may be used when available, or that hardware with controllers and a power supply may be needed when a virtual platform is unavailable in its submission context.
  9. Verify before returning the original to storage. Confirm that the image can be read by the intended preservation software, that checksums were recorded, and that the backup is accessible. Do not use successful gameplay alone as proof that every part of the original was captured.

Preservation copy, access copy, and recordkeeping

A useful preservation set contains more than a file. Keep the original capture, checksum, descriptive metadata, technical metadata, device and software details, error log, platform information, and documentation about the physical object. The Library of Congress includes descriptive and production metadata in its game-preservation context, while NARA recommends technical and descriptive metadata and checksums for digitized records.

Item Purpose What to retain
Original carrier Primary artifact and evidence Safe physical storage, condition notes, packaging, manuals, and related materials
Preservation capture Faithful working record for future verification Unmodified image or file set, capture settings, device/software details, errors, checksum
Access copy Convenient play, review, or emulation Clearly labeled derivative, creation date, and relationship to the preservation capture
Independent backup Recovery if the working copy fails Separate storage location and a verified duplicate

Do not overwrite the preservation capture while troubleshooting an access copy. If a later tool produces a better interpretation, keep the earlier capture and document the new derivative rather than silently replacing the evidence.

Choosing between capture options

Decision axis Questions to answer Safer choice
Carrier and platform Is it a cartridge, floppy size and encoding, or optical format? Which console or computer and revision? Hardware and software documented for that exact combination
Condition Is the item clean, stable, and free of cracks, warping, corrosion, mold, or shedding? Pause and consult a specialist when the answer is uncertain
Capture purpose Do you need a preservation image, an access copy, gameplay video, or all three? Make the preservation capture first; derive access files separately
Verification Can you record checksums, metadata, device details, and read errors? Choose a workflow that leaves an auditable record
Continuity Can you maintain a compatible drive or console and interpret the result later? Retain platform documentation, manuals, controllers, and power requirements
Practicality Are the required drives, adapters, software, and expertise available? Use a trained service when equipment is obsolete or the item is high-value

No comparative price or current-availability data establishes that one option is best for every owner. The correct choice is the one that matches the media and can be verified without putting the original through repeated risky attempts.

Floppies

Store floppy disks upright in protective enclosures, away from strong magnetic fields and environmental extremes. Move captured data into current storage rather than relying indefinitely on aging disks and increasingly scarce drives.

Cartridges

Keep cartridges in clean protective packaging, away from moisture, heat, dust, and unnecessary handling. Do not stack them in a way that stresses shells or labels. Store manuals and packaging with an identifier that links them to the corresponding cartridge and capture records.

Home storage conditions should be stable and moderate; institutional temperature and humidity ranges are context-specific and should not be presented as a universal household target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop and call a professional

  • The carrier is moldy, cracked, warped, delaminating, shedding, corroded, or chemically deteriorating.
  • The only available drive or console is unmaintained, mechanically noisy, electrically uncertain, or known to damage media.
  • The disk uses an unfamiliar format, unusual copy protection, or a drive geometry you cannot document.
  • The item is unique, historically significant, or expensive enough that a failed experiment would be unacceptable.
  • Repeated read attempts are producing errors, freezes, or visible mechanical stress.

NARA identifies trained professionals and professional directories as appropriate options when technical requirements or condition exceed an owner’s equipment and experience. A specialist can often assess the carrier before attempting a capture, which is safer than improvising a cleaning or reader setup.

Legal and rights limits

Preservation technique does not answer whether you may legally make, decrypt, retain, or use a particular game copy. Copyright, license terms, anti-circumvention rules, institutional exemptions, and permitted uses vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. The Library of Congress discusses rights clearance in a specific uncompiled-source-code submission context; that discussion is not a general ruling on private copying. Check the law that applies to your location and use case before distributing or bypassing protection.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The preservation guidance supports careful handling, format-specific capture, metadata, checksums, duplicate storage, and platform documentation. It does not provide a universal cartridge reader, a cartridge-specific conservation chemical, a failure-rate statistic for privately owned game media, or a guarantee that any particular commercial device will work with your title. Treat claims about compatibility, price, availability, or archival lifetime as format- and date-dependent, and verify them against current documentation before risking an original.
