For a one-off export, open the proposal in a browser, wait for its content and assets to render, then use the browser’s Print command and choose its PDF destination. Check the print preview before saving: a PDF uses print rendering, which can reflow the page, change colors, or omit backgrounds. If you control the HTML, print CSS and @page rules give you more control; if you need repeatable exports, Puppeteer exposes settings for paper size, margins, backgrounds, and fonts.
Save a proposal as a PDF in a browser
- Open the HTML proposal in your browser and wait for the content, images, and other visible assets to finish loading. For an interactive proposal, confirm that the content you need is actually visible before printing.
- Open the browser’s Print dialog and select its PDF destination. The exact menu labels and destination name vary by browser and operating system.
- Review the preview before saving. Check paper size, orientation, margins, scale, page breaks, wrapping, headers and footers, images, and background colors.
- Save the PDF, open it, and inspect every page for clipped text, missing graphics, legibility, and a complete final page.
Print preview matters because a PDF is not necessarily a picture of the current screen. The browser can apply print-specific styles, and print settings can change the result.

Why a PDF may look different from the screen
Print CSS changes the page
Web pages can use print stylesheets and media queries to adapt content for paper, and @page rules can set page-related styling. A proposal designed for a wide screen may reflow, hide screen-only controls, or use different spacing when printed. See MDN’s printing guide.

Browsers and renderers can adjust colors for print or omit background graphics. If you own the proposal’s CSS, create a print stylesheet for the intended paper layout and test it in the target browser. When using Puppeteer, background printing is an explicit option; its PDF documentation also describes print color adjustment and the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust. Improve the layout when you can edit the HTML
Use print-specific CSS for content that needs a different paper layout, and use @page when you need to specify page dimensions or margins. MDN describes these approaches for adapting a page to printed output. After editing, print again and inspect the resulting PDF; CSS cannot compensate for missing assets or untested browser-specific rendering.
For programmatic control, Puppeteer’s PDF API generates output using the print CSS media type by default. If a project intentionally needs screen styling, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before generating the PDF, then inspect the output—the screen-media choice is a tradeoff, not a universal fix. Generate a controlled PDF with Puppeteer
Puppeteer suits recurring exports or developer-managed workflows where you want explicit rendering settings. Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. This example loads a local HTML file, requests A4 portrait output with backgrounds and CSS page sizing, waits for fonts, and writes a PDF:

These are documented API defaults, not universal recommendations. Match page size and margins to the document, choose intentionally between print and screen media, and inspect the saved file.

Troubleshoot common PDF layout problems
- The PDF reflows or hides content: Print CSS or print media queries may be changing the screen layout. Review the print stylesheet; with Puppeteer, test screen media only if matching screen styling is the intended tradeoff.
- Backgrounds or colors are missing: In the browser, check print settings for background graphics. In Puppeteer, set
printBackground: truefor CSS backgrounds, and review its print color adjustment guidance. - Text or images are clipped: Inspect page size, orientation, margins, scale, and page breaks in preview. If you control the HTML, adjust print CSS or
@pagerules and regenerate. - The chosen paper size seems ignored: Puppeteer’s
preferCSSPageSizedefaults tofalse. Set it totruewhen CSS@pagedimensions should take priority over the configured paper format. - Fonts look different: Confirm the intended fonts loaded before export. Puppeteer’s documented
