Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLead with the user problem, explain your solution in one sentence, then demonstrate one complete flow that shows the result. Finish by stating why that result matters. Before you build the pitch, check the event’s time limit, permitted demo format, and judging rubric: those rules—not a generic formula—determine what belongs in your presentation.
What should a short hackathon demo show?
Give judges enough context to understand the project, then let them see it solve a real problem. Organize the demo around one user and one clear outcome rather than listing every feature.

- Name the problem: Say who experiences it and what makes it consequential.
- Explain the solution: Describe in one sentence what your project does for that user.
- Show one complete flow: Narrate the steps from the user’s perspective, from starting point to result.
- Connect the result to its value: Explain what changes for the user and, where relevant, how that relates to the event’s challenge.
- Close with impact or a next step: State the benefit you can support, or what you would do next. Label expected or projected impact as such rather than presenting it as measured.
This structure makes the product legible before technical details compete for attention. JetBrains’ Katherine Druckman reports that judges interviewed for her article valued a clear problem and focused demo. That is reported judge advice, not a guarantee that one format will win. JetBrains’ account of hackathon judging includes advice from practitioners such as Colin Lowenberg of Nebius: “Your demo should be the focus. It should show what your app does in one flow. If it’s too long, cut down on your features.”

| Event guidance | Time or format | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard Health Systems Innovation Lab, 2026 participant guide | Three-minute example: introduction, 10 seconds; problem, 20 seconds; product, 1 minute; demo, 1 minute; wrap-up, 30 seconds. | Use as a starting allocation for a three-minute slot, then adapt it to the event brief. |
| MPOnline Hackathon 2026 | Pitch of 5–10 minutes; maximum 10 slides. | Follow this event’s stated limit rather than compressing the pitch to a three-minute template. |
| eGov Hackathon Philippines 2026 | Requires a live, end-to-end system demonstration; slides, screenshots, mockups, and recorded demos do not substitute for the required live demo. | Plan to demonstrate the working workflow live, as required by this event’s rubric. |
The Harvard guide’s three-minute plan gives the product and demo the largest portions while reserving time for the problem and close. Treat the timings as a planning aid: if your event allows a different format or has a longer slot, adjust the balance without losing the core user flow. The guide allows visualizations or mockups when a live demo is not possible, but that flexibility does not override another event’s live-demo requirement. Read the Harvard Health Systems Innovation Lab 2026 participant guide, check MPOnline Hackathon 2026 guidance, and check the eGov Hackathon 2026 criteria.
How should you choose what to demo?
Choose the smallest complete flow that makes the project’s main promise visible. A feature tour can obscure the reason the project exists; a focused flow lets the audience follow what the user does and what happens next.

- Start from a state the audience can understand, such as a user’s need or an input.
- Show the action your project enables and the resulting output or change.
- Explain technical choices only when they clarify how that outcome works or satisfy a rubric criterion.
- Cut optional branches if they make the central use case difficult to follow.
Before presenting, rehearse the intended flow and prepare any required demo data. Smooth or mock slow interactions only where the event permits it, and do not imply a mocked step is a working integration. If the rubric requires a live, end-to-end system demonstration, the workflow must genuinely run that way.
How do you match the demo to the judging rubric?
Read the scoring criteria before assigning presentation time. For example, the eGov Hackathon Philippines 2026 rubric weights API integration and technical implementation at 30%, live demonstration and functionality at 25%, citizen or government impact at 15%, problem relevance at 10%, technical quality at 15%, and scalability or adoption at 5%. These are weights for that event, not a standard scorecard for hackathons generally.

- The brilliant green laser pointer is powerful and easy to see, even on LCD and plasma displays and in brightly lit rooms.
- The LCD display with timer lets you manage your time with silent, vibrating alerts and controls that are easy to set and adjust–-you’ll focus on your presentation, not the clock.
- With a range of up to 100 feet (30 meters), you can enjoy the freedom to move around the room and mingle with your audience for greater impact. A reception-level indicator ensures you don’t wander too far.
- The intuitive slideshow controls help you navigate through your presentation with confidence. Buttons are easy to find by touch. The smooth contours feel great in your hand. You’ll be in control from the first slide to the last.
- A storable plug-and-play wireless receiver makes it simple to get started—just plug the receiver into a USB port and use it right away. There’s no software to install. When you’re through, the receiver stores inside the presenter to make packing up easy.
The 2026 Harvard Health Systems Innovation Lab guide uses different categories: challenge, technology and innovation, implementation, team, pitch, and Q&A. The difference is a practical reason to tailor your explanation: emphasize integration and a working system when the event scores them heavily; make the challenge, team, or Q&A clear when those are part of the rubric.
Keep technical explanation attached to the demonstrated flow. Instead of reciting a stack list, explain how a relevant choice enables the user outcome or addresses a scored requirement. For impact, identify the affected user and concrete benefit, and distinguish observed results from estimates or future potential.

What should you do if part of the project is unfinished?
Be direct about what works and what does not. Demonstrate the functioning core, identify any unfinished part at the point where it matters, and avoid presenting a mockup, planned integration, or expected result as if it were already operational. This is especially important when the event requires a live working demonstration.
Keep the audience’s attention on the central use case. If a slow interaction or unstable branch is not essential, simplify the flow only if the event rules permit it; do not conceal a limitation that changes what the demo claims to prove.
