Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore moving from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, make sure you can sign in to the Microsoft account used for your Xbox profile and purchases. Connect the new console to the internet, sign in with that account, and launch the games whose progress matters so supported cloud saves can sync. Keep your old console available until you have checked that progress on the new one.
What to do before switching consoles
- Confirm account access. Check that you know the sign-in method for the Microsoft account attached to your Xbox profile and can authenticate to it. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules associate the user license for Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games with the Microsoft account. A different account should not be expected to inherit the original account’s game purchases or profile.
- Keep the old console intact for now. Do not wipe, sell, or give it away until you have tested the games and saves that matter on the new console. Retaining it during verification is a practical precaution, not a stated Microsoft requirement.
- Connect the new Xbox and sign in with the same account. Cloud save roaming requires the consoles to be online. The exact timing of a save sync can vary; do not assume every game’s latest progress has appeared until you have opened and checked it.
- Install or start each important game, then verify its progress. Launch the title on the new console and check for the expected save or progression before retiring the old device. For games with separate Xbox One and Series editions, publisher-managed accounts, or progress spanning separate products, check the game’s current support guidance.
- Decide whether to change the Home console. Do this only if household sharing or offline device licensing on the new console is useful. The account’s user license and the console’s device license serve different purposes; upgrading alone is not a reason to change the Home console.
Which Xbox saves transfer?
For supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games, saves can roam through the cloud to other consoles in those families. Microsoft’s backward compatibility FAQ distinguishes this from original Xbox saves: “Lastly, game saves will not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S but once created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, the game saves can transfer to other Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles through the cloud.” The first part refers specifically to original Xbox game saves, not to Xbox One saves.

Support is not a blanket promise for every game version or progression system. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit policy says that between Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, games sharing the same TitleID must support save roaming for content available on both generations. A separate release, edition, or publisher account system may use different progression rules, so verify the specific title when that distinction applies.

How game ownership and compatibility affect the move
Most Xbox One games are playable on Series X|S, but check the individual title and console model. Xbox’s backward compatibility information says compatible owned digital games appear in Ready to Install. A compatible disc game requires the disc to download and play; Xbox Series S has no disc drive and uses digital games only. On Series X, disc play depends on title compatibility, and you must keep the disc.

Digital ownership follows the Microsoft account used for the purchase. Separately, the Home console has a device license that can let other users on that console access eligible games. Microsoft Support says Home console changes are limited to five times during a one-year period; the support page does not state a year for that limit. See Microsoft’s digital-goods rules before changing the setting for household or offline access.
Save syncing is not the same as moving installed games
Cloud save roaming concerns game progress; transferring installed game files is a separate convenience. You do not need an external drive or a local game-file transfer simply to meet the cloud-save preparation steps above. If you want to move installations rather than download them again, treat that as a separate setup task and check current Xbox instructions for the available options.
