You can make your current PlayStation library easier to manage and prepare your account and saves for a future console—but Sony has not confirmed PS6 compatibility, save migration, storage support, or account-entitlement policy in the official material covered here. Treat current PS4-to-PS5 guidance as a useful example of how Sony handled the last transition, not a promise about the next one.
Will my PS5 games work on PS6?
That has not been confirmed in the official PlayStation sources covered here. They explain PS4 game compatibility on PS5 and data transfer to PS5; they do not establish whether PS6 will play PS5 games.

For context, Sony says PS5 supports the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games. Some PS4 games have limited functionality, errors, or unexpected behavior, and Sony identifies a small number as PS4-only. This is a statement about PS4 games on PS5, not a forecast for PS6. See PlayStation’s PS4 game compatibility guidance for the current list and caveats.
Will I keep my PlayStation account and digital games when I upgrade?
Sony has not confirmed how PS6 will handle PlayStation accounts, digital entitlements, or library access. Its current PS4-to-PS5 instructions use the same PlayStation account on both consoles, and digital games can be downloaded from the destination console’s Game Library. That describes the current generation’s process, not a guarantee about PS6. Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem guidance also describes staying connected across PS4 and PS5.
#1 Best Overall
- Built-in 4TB Capacity USB 3.0 External Gaming Hard Drive (7200RPM Enterprise HDD, designed for 24/7)
- You can play PS4 games directly from USB extended storage, which lets you save space on your PS5 console storage for PS5 games. To play PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage drive back to your PS5 console's internal SSD storage. It’s much quicker to copy a PS5 game from USB extended storage than to re-download it.
- Compatible with PS5 Game Console, Expand game console storage instantly! NOTE: You cannot download PS5 games direct to USB Hard Drive, It has to download to internal SSD and then "Move/Copy" to USB HDD after that. (about 3 ~ 5 min transfer a game)
- PS5 Game has to play on internal SSD, you can "Move & Store" your PS5 Games from SSD to USB HDD when you're not play it. And it's always faster than re-download it online. That will free up your Internal SSD Space for more games.
- This external hard drive boasts a brand-new, premium HDD case paired with a excellent refurbished, top-tier internal 7200RPM enterprise hard drive from a leading manufacturer. With zero bad sectors and 100% health, it has passed rigorous factory quality tests to ensure exceptional performance and reliability. Fully researched and tested for outstanding performance and compatibility with PC & gaming consoles, it stands as the top choice in external gaming hard drives.
Keep access to the account you use for your library. Do not create a replacement account solely in anticipation of a future console. Remember that an account’s access to a digital game is different from moving the game’s installed files or its saved data.
Physical games are different again: playing a disc-based game requires the disc and a console with a compatible disc drive. On PS5, PS4 game discs cannot be used with the Digital Edition, and the disc must remain inserted to play. Sony has not announced what disc-drive options PS6 will have.
How do I transfer my PS5 saves to a new PlayStation?
There is no confirmed PS6 save-transfer procedure yet. For a current PS4-to-PS5 transfer, Sony documents several ways to handle data, with different options for games, saves, and other content. The transfer tool can move supported user and account information, saved data, captures, playable games, and certain settings, but eligibility varies by source console and whether the destination console is in initial setup. Follow Sony’s transfer instructions for the specific workflow.

Keep your account and PS5 ready
- Keep the PlayStation account associated with the library accessible.
- For Sony’s documented PS4-to-PS5 transfer, both consoles should use the same account, run current system software, synchronize trophy information, and connect to the same network.
- Check which saves have uploaded if you use PlayStation Plus cloud storage. Sony lists cloud storage as a save-data option; that does not establish that PS6 will restore those saves or that cloud storage is available without the applicable subscription.
Know where games and saves are stored today
Sony’s current PS5 storage guidance distinguishes game installs from saved data. PS4 and PS5 game data can be stored on M.2 storage. USB extended storage supports PS4 game data; PS5 games must be moved back to console storage or M.2 storage before they can be played. For saved data, Sony lists cloud storage and USB copying for PS4 saves, but not USB copying for PS5 saves. See Sony’s PS5 storage guidance.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
That means a USB drive is not a complete PS5 save backup. It may help manage PS4 game data or copy PS4 saves, but Sony says PS5 saves cannot be copied from a PS5 console to USB.
Choose a current transfer route based on the data
- Digital games: Download them from the destination console’s Game Library.
- Disc games: Install by inserting the game disc; a compatible disc drive is required.
- Game data: Sony documents network transfer and eligible USB extended storage for current console workflows. It also documents moving an M.2 SSD between PS5 consoles to use stored game data. These procedures are for PS5, not a confirmed PS6 process.
- PS4 saves: Sony documents PlayStation Plus cloud storage or copying from the source PS4 to USB and then to the destination console.
- PS5 saves: Sony lists cloud storage, but not USB copying from the console.
Should I buy an external SSD now for PS6?
Not specifically for PS6. Sony has not confirmed whether PS6 will support PS5 M.2 drives, USB extended storage, or any current drive format. A drive that works with PS5 should not be assumed to work with a future console.
Buy storage only for a current need, such as managing PS4 game data on a PS5. Before using any drive for that purpose, check Sony’s current compatibility and formatting instructions. Keep in mind that USB extended storage does not let you play PS5 games directly from the drive, and it cannot hold USB-copied PS5 saves.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat is—and is not—known about a PS6 upgrade
The official sources covered here do not confirm whether PS6 will play PS5 games, restore PS5 saves, preserve PlayStation Store entitlements, support PS5 M.2 drives, accept USB extended storage, or include a disc drive. Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 process shows how the previous transition worked; it cannot establish the policy for a future console. When Sony announces PS6, check its official support information for compatibility, account, save-transfer, disc, and storage details before buying accessories or changing how you manage your library.
