Start with the exact game’s current PC requirements, then check your hardware, storage, Windows updates and graphics drivers against them. There is no universal checklist for every major release: minimum specs are a floor, not a promise of smooth performance, and an SSD is necessary only when the title requires or recommends one.
Check the game’s current PC requirements first
Open the game’s official store or developer page and find the requirements for the PC version—not a console version or another title in the series. Requirements can vary between games and may change, so check the listing again close to launch.

Compare the requirements with your PC across the items the publisher actually lists:
- Supported operating system and any stated version details
- Processor and memory
- Graphics card and any stated DirectX or other platform requirement
- Required free storage and whether the game specifies an SSD
- Any additional hardware or security requirements
Keep minimum and recommended specifications separate. Steam Support warns: “Games may not launch if your machine is just at or below the game’s system requirements.” Meeting minimum specs does not guarantee a particular frame rate or trouble-free launch. Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide also recommends checking the game’s requirements when diagnosing launch problems.

Check the install drive’s free space and type
Look at the available capacity on the drive where you plan to install the game, and compare it with the title’s own stated storage requirement. A PC can have plenty of total storage yet lack enough free space on the selected drive.
Drive requirements are title-specific. For example, Larian Studios lists Baldur’s Gate 3 for Windows as requiring an SSD and 150 GB of available SSD space. That is an example for that game, not a general requirement for new releases. Another title may list a different capacity or may not specify an SSD.

If the game calls for an SSD or you need more compatible space, verify the PC supports the drive you are considering before buying: check its form factor, interface, available installation slot and the computer or motherboard maker’s compatibility information. Do not assume every PC can take the same drive.

Install relevant pending Windows updates and check whether your graphics driver is current. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance includes operating-system and driver updates; EA likewise recommends checking Windows and graphics drivers when addressing graphics problems. GPU makers may release drivers around major game launches, but an update is not a guaranteed fix.

Get graphics drivers from the GPU maker’s official support channel or, for a laptop with customized graphics, from the laptop manufacturer’s support page. Steam points users to official NVIDIA, AMD and Intel driver sources. Avoid third-party driver download sites.
Use a simple release-week checklist
Before launch week
- Find the official PC requirements for the exact game and note minimum and recommended CPU, memory and GPU, supported OS, any stated DirectX requirement, storage capacity and SSD notes.
- Compare each listed requirement with your computer. If it is at or below the minimum line, allow for possible launch or performance problems; do not infer a frame rate from the minimum specs alone.
- Check free space on the actual installation drive and confirm whether the title requires or recommends a particular drive type.
- Install relevant Windows updates and check graphics drivers through official support sources.
On or near release day
- Restart the PC before troubleshooting. Steam recommends following its launch steps after a fresh restart.
- If the installed game has missing content or textures, or crashes, use the launcher’s file verification option. On Steam, go to Library → game Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification may take several minutes; avoid running it for multiple games at once or alongside intensive disk work. See Steam’s file verification instructions.
- If the game still will not launch, temporarily disable non-essential software as a troubleshooting step, then consult the game developer or platform support. Do not turn off security protections wholesale; software conflicts are only one possible cause.
Do you need to upgrade your PC?
Not necessarily. First compare the PC with the target game’s actual requirements and check the free space and drive type it specifies. Consider an SSD only if that title requires or recommends one, or your current drive does not have enough suitable space. The game’s requirements do not establish whether a particular drive will fit or work in your computer, so confirm compatibility before purchasing.
