The safest sequence is: back up the iPhone, finish transferring your data, check for unfinished repairs, unpair an Apple Watch if necessary, sign out of Apple services, erase the iPhone and its eSIM when appropriate, then follow the destination’s shipping rules. Do not manually delete photos, contacts or other iCloud-synced items while signed in; Apple warns that doing so can delete them from iCloud and your other connected devices.
The exact handoff differs between an Apple trade-in and a private sale. Apple’s current instructions establish the preparation and packing steps for its own trade-in route, while a marketplace or carrier can impose different inspection, payment, shipping and return requirements.

Choose the handoff route before you erase anything
Trade-in programs prioritize a guided process: you receive an offer, follow the program’s inspection rules and use its shipping or drop-off instructions. A private resale can give you more control over the listing, buyer and payment, but you must handle the description, communications, shipping and any agreed return terms yourself.

| Decision point | Trade-in program | Private resale |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience | Usually provides a defined inspection and shipping workflow. Apple’s program supplies a device-specific kit. | You choose the venue and arrange the listing, buyer communication and shipment. |
| Value | The final amount depends on that program’s offer and condition assessment; no current amount is established here. | The amount depends on your listing, buyer demand and negotiated terms; no reliable venue-wide price is established here. |
| Condition and repairs | Apple’s current trade-in instructions require a repair marked “Finish Repair” to be completed before the device is traded in. | The marketplace or buyer may set its own disclosure and inspection rules. Apple’s “Finish Repair” requirement should not be assumed to govern every private sale. |
| Payment, shipping and returns | Follow the program’s payment and courier instructions, and retain proof of shipment. | Follow the chosen marketplace or carrier’s payment, shipping, insurance and return rules; Apple’s kit instructions do not apply automatically. |
Whichever route you choose, do not erase the old phone until the replacement has the data you need and you have confirmed that the backup or transfer completed.

1. Back up and transfer your data first
Make a current backup
Create a fresh backup using the Apple-supported method you normally use, such as an iCloud backup or a computer backup. Check the backup date and time before proceeding. A backup is your recovery point if the replacement phone is lost, damaged or missing an item during transfer.
Complete the move to the replacement iPhone
Transfer the information you still need to the replacement device before touching the erase controls. Open the apps and records that matter to you—such as photos, messages, contacts, notes, calendars and authentication tools—to confirm that the transfer is usable, not merely started. Keep the old iPhone powered on and connected until you have finished this check.
Do not clean up iCloud by hand
While the old iPhone remains signed in to iCloud, deleting a synced photo, contact, note or file is an account-level action, not a local-only cleanup. Apple’s “What to do before you sell, give away or trade in your iPhone or iPad” (published June 12, 2026) warns that manual deletion can remove the item from iCloud and every connected device. Let the final erase process remove the local data instead.

- Verify that critical data opens on the replacement, rather than relying only on a progress indicator.
- Keep any recovery codes, passkeys or authentication-device instructions available before the old phone is erased.
- Do not start the erase while a transfer or backup is still running.
2. Check Parts and Service History for unfinished repairs
Before trade-in, inspect the repair record in Settings and open Parts and Service History when it is available on your iPhone. Apple’s current U.S. trade-in instructions say that a component labeled Finish Repair must have its repair completed before the device can be traded in.
Resolve that status before packaging the phone for Apple’s program, and keep documentation from the repair if you have it. This is an Apple trade-in eligibility instruction, not a universal rule for every private buyer or resale platform. A private buyer may still ask about replaced parts, repair quality or remaining issues, so disclose those facts accurately in the listing.

3. Unpair an Apple Watch when one is connected
If the iPhone is paired with an Apple Watch that you are keeping or moving to another phone, unpair it before the handoff. Apple’s “Sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone” guide includes unpairing as part of the preparation sequence. Complete the unpairing from the iPhone’s Watch controls, follow the prompts and wait for the process to finish. If no watch is paired, there is nothing to do in this step.
4. Sign out, then erase the iPhone
Sign out of Apple services
Use the Apple Account controls in Settings to sign out as directed by the current on-screen flow. This removes the old owner’s account connection before the device is handed to someone else. Keep the account password available in case iOS requests authentication.
Use the built-in erase command
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose Erase All Content and Settings.
- Read the account, backup and cellular prompts, authenticate when asked and confirm the erase.
Apple’s current iOS 27 “Sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone” guide explains that erasing the device removes your personal content and settings. When Find My was enabled, the erase process turns off Find My and Activation Lock, leaving the iPhone ready for a new owner. Do not substitute a manual deletion of individual items for this command.
Wait for the completion screen
Leave the iPhone connected to power if needed and wait until the erase has completed and the device returns to the initial setup screen. Do not hand it over while it still shows your Home Screen, asks for your Apple Account or is displaying an in-progress reset.
5. Handle the SIM, eSIM and carrier plan separately
Physical SIM
If the iPhone has a physical SIM, remove it before shipping or giving away the device. Store it securely or place it in the replacement phone only if your carrier instructs you to do so.

eSIM
For an iPhone using eSIM, choose the erase-device-and-eSIM option when the erase flow presents it for a sale or trade-in. The wording can vary by region and iOS version, so read the prompt carefully rather than assuming that erasing the phone automatically handles the eSIM.
Apple’s “How to erase an eSIM on your iPhone or iPad” (published October 5, 2026, Ireland-region support) states that a person selling or trading in the device should erase the eSIM and contact the carrier about the associated plan. Erasing the eSIM and canceling, suspending or transferring cellular service are separate actions.
Coordinate with the carrier
Ask your carrier how to move service to the replacement phone, suspend it, cancel it or issue a replacement SIM. Carrier steps differ by country, plan and network, and Apple’s U.S. trade-in article does not establish a universal carrier workflow. If the carrier requires an account or device identifier, complete that process before shipment.
6. Remove optional service and payment ties
Apple Pay cards and passes
Apple’s pre-sale guidance includes removing Apple Pay cards and passes as part of preparing the device. Treat this as a follow-up to the account and erase process, not as a reason to delete individual synced data manually. Confirm that cards and passes are available on the replacement device or in the relevant issuer’s app before you finish.
iMessage when moving to a non-Apple phone
If your replacement is not an iPhone, follow Apple’s deregistration guidance for iMessage so new messages can reach your phone number through the replacement platform. This is situational: it matters when you are leaving Apple’s messaging system, not when you are moving from one iPhone to another.

AppleCare coverage
Apple’s pre-sale article also calls out canceling or transferring AppleCare. Decide what should happen to the coverage and follow Apple’s current account instructions. Do not assume that erasing the iPhone automatically cancels or transfers a service contract.
7. Pack the phone according to the destination
Apple trade-in
For Apple’s trade-in route, use the correct device kit and follow the packing directions supplied with it. Apple says the kit contains what is needed to pack the iPhone. Put the phone in the kit as instructed and retain the courier receipt or other proof of shipment.
Do not add a case, power adapter, cable or other accessory to the Apple trade-in box. Apple’s current trade-in instructions say included extras will not be returned. If an accessory matters to you, keep it out of the shipment.
Private resale
A private buyer or marketplace may require different packaging, tracking, insurance, declared value or delivery confirmation. Follow that destination’s written instructions instead of copying Apple’s kit procedure. Photograph the phone’s condition and the packed parcel for your records, and use the payment and shipping protections offered by the venue you selected.
8. Perform a final handoff check
Use this checklist immediately before you seal the package or meet the buyer:
Best Value
- The replacement phone contains the data and accounts you need.
- The old iPhone has completed its backup and transfer work.
- No important iCloud content was manually deleted while the old phone was signed in.
- Any Parts and Service History entry marked “Finish Repair” has been resolved for an Apple trade-in.
- An Apple Watch has been unpaired when applicable.
- You have signed out through the Apple Account controls.
- The erase command completed and the phone shows the initial setup screen.
- The physical SIM is removed, and the eSIM choice was handled deliberately.
- The carrier plan has been canceled, suspended or moved only after you confirmed the carrier’s required process.
- Apple Pay, iMessage deregistration and AppleCare actions were completed when relevant to your situation.
- The phone is packed with only the items the destination allows.
- You have retained the Apple courier receipt or the private-sale tracking and shipment records.
Common problems and the correct recovery
You erased the phone before the transfer finished
Stop and check the backup or replacement device. Restore the latest available backup if necessary. If the backup is incomplete, contact Apple Support or your backup provider before attempting to reconstruct data from memory. Do not assume an erased phone can supply data that was never backed up or transferred.
The phone still asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account
The account sign-out or erase sequence was not completed. Do not ship the phone. Connect to the internet, return to the Apple Account and erase controls, authenticate as requested and confirm that the device reaches the setup screen without asking for the former owner’s credentials.
Find My or Activation Lock appears to remain enabled
Repeat the account and erase checks before handing over the device. Apple states that erasing an iPhone with Find My enabled turns off Find My and Activation Lock; a device that still presents the previous owner’s lock should be treated as not ready.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe eSIM disappeared but service is still active
That is possible because eSIM removal and carrier-plan cancellation are separate. Contact the carrier and ask whether the plan should be transferred, suspended or canceled. Do not infer the carrier’s billing status from the iPhone’s erased state.
Apple’s trade-in flow rejects the phone because of a repair status
Open Parts and Service History and look for “Finish Repair.” Complete the indicated repair process before resubmitting to Apple’s trade-in program. A private-sale destination may evaluate the issue differently, but disclose the repair status to prospective buyers.
You included accessories in an Apple trade-in shipment
Contact the trade-in service promptly if the parcel has not left. Apple says accessories included in its kit shipment will not be returned, so keep future shipments limited to the phone and the kit’s required materials.
The regional eSIM instructions do not match your screen
Apple’s eSIM article cited here is for Ireland, while the trade-in packing guidance cited above is U.S.-specific. Use the wording shown on your iPhone, check Apple’s support page for your country and confirm the carrier’s instructions before selecting an irreversible option.

A practical schedule
Several days before handoff
- Choose the trade-in or private-sale route and read its inspection and shipping rules.
- Arrange the replacement phone and carrier move.
- Create a backup and complete the transfer.
- Check Parts and Service History and resolve any Apple trade-in repair requirement.
The day before shipment or pickup
- Unpair an Apple Watch if applicable.
- Confirm that critical information opens on the replacement phone.
- Decide how Apple Pay, iMessage and AppleCare should be handled.
- Prepare the physical SIM and review the eSIM prompt you expect to see.
At the handoff
- Sign out of Apple services.
- Erase All Content and Settings.
- Choose the appropriate eSIM action.
- Wait for the setup screen.
- Pack exactly according to Apple’s kit or the private-sale destination’s instructions.
- Record the tracking or courier receipt.
Following that order protects the two things most difficult to recover after a handoff: your data and your account access. It also leaves the recipient with an iPhone that is not tied to your Apple Account or cellular identity.
