Before cold weather arrives, arrange heating-system and chimney maintenance, test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, seal drafts, insulate exposed pipes, check fuel, and make an outage plan. Massachusetts does not set one calendar date for the first cold snap, so use current local forecasts and alerts to time last-minute preparations.
How do I prepare my home before the first cold snap?
Work through these steps before temperatures drop. For heating or alarm equipment that needs repair or replacement, use a qualified professional and follow the equipment maker’s instructions.

- Book seasonal heating service. Arrange annual professional maintenance for your heating equipment. If you use a fireplace, wood stove, or pellet stove, schedule an annual chimney and flue inspection and cleaning.
- Check alarms. Test smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms monthly. Check their manufacture dates and follow each unit’s replacement guidance.
- Reduce drafts and protect pipes. Check doors and windows for drafts, weather-strip or caulk where needed, and insulate pipes in cold or exposed areas. Find the main water shutoff before an emergency.
- Check fuel and prepare for outages. Make sure you have sufficient fuel for expected conditions. Gather basic emergency supplies, charge phones when severe weather approaches, and decide where household members will stay if the main heating system fails.
- Make supplemental heat safer. Use a space heater only as temporary heat and follow its instructions, including clearance and shutoff precautions. Never use a gas stove or oven to heat the home.
Massachusetts recommends annual professional maintenance for heating equipment and annual chimney or flue inspection and cleaning for solid-fuel appliances. Its extreme-cold guidance also recommends weatherizing the home and preparing for disruptions.
What should I check on my heating system?
Maintenance depends on the kind of system. Arrange service for a furnace, boiler, water heater, or oil burner as appropriate; do not treat every heating appliance as interchangeable. Keep combustible materials away from heating equipment, and make sure exterior vents and exhaust outlets are free of leaves, vegetation, and snow. Drifting snow can block a vent even after it was clear earlier.

Where should smoke and CO alarms go?
Massachusetts calls for working smoke and CO alarms on every level of the home and outside bedrooms. Placement details vary by alarm type and residence. The state’s smoke and carbon monoxide alarm requirements explain additional locations; for most homes, CO alarms should be within 10 feet of bedroom doors on levels with sleeping areas.
- Test alarms monthly and replace batteries or units as directed by the manufacturer.
- Check the manufacture date on each alarm and use the device-specific replacement interval; there is no single lifespan that applies to every type.
- When buying a replacement, look for a listing by a recognized testing laboratory, such as UL or Intertek, and check state placement requirements.
Smoke and CO alarms are especially important when heating equipment is in use. Massachusetts Fire Services reported nearly 5,000 non-fire incidents involving carbon monoxide in the state in 2023. That figure is a count of reported incidents, not a household risk estimate.

Never place towels or any objects on top of the heater to prevent overheating and ensure safe, reliable performance
How can I reduce heat loss and protect pipes?
Start with doors and windows: caulk gaps and add weather stripping where drafts enter. Massachusetts also recommends proper insulation and covering windows from the inside. These modest seasonal measures can reduce drafts; a home with major insulation or equipment issues may need a professional assessment rather than a quick seal.
Identify pipes in unheated, exposed, or otherwise cold areas and insulate them. Make sure everyone in the household knows where the main water shutoff is so it can be reached quickly if a pipe leaks.
What belongs in an outage plan?
Keep a flashlight, spare batteries, a radio, first-aid supplies, drinking water, and nonperishable food available. Charge phones and other essential electronics when severe weather is approaching. Check fuel supplies and decide where household members can stay if the primary heating system stops working.

Know how to shut off water and other utilities if needed. Use generators and secondary heating equipment only with proper ventilation and according to the manufacturer’s instructions; never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space. The National Weather Service winter-storm preparedness guidance offers general advice for preparing for severe winter weather and outages.
How do I use a space heater without adding risk?
A portable electric space heater is temporary supplemental heat, not a substitute for a home’s primary heating system. Massachusetts Department of Fire Services guidance says to keep combustibles at least three feet away, plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, and turn it off when leaving the room or going to sleep. Follow the specific heater’s instructions as well. Never use a gas stove or oven to heat the home.
Heating fires are a significant reason to take these precautions. Massachusetts Fire Services reported nearly 6,000 heating fires from 2019 through 2023, with eight deaths, 139 injuries to residents and firefighters, and more than $42 million in damage. The figures cover the state and the stated five-year period; they do not predict the risk for an individual household.

What should I do if a pipe freezes or the heat fails?
If a pipe freezes
Massachusetts extreme-cold instructions advise opening faucets and warming the pipe with a hair dryer or towels soaked in hot water. An older state cold-weather handout says to remove pipe insulation and begin warming at the part most exposed to cold. Do not use an open flame. If you cannot safely address the problem or a pipe is leaking, shut off water if possible and seek qualified help.
If the heating system stops
Gather household members in one room, use safe layers and blankets, and seek appropriate help for restoring heat. Do not try to compensate with a gas oven or stove, or use a generator indoors. If conditions are unsafe, use your outage plan to move to a warmer safe location.
