Start by confirming your local utility’s schedule, affected services, and restoration requirements; then plan for any loss of heat, hot water, or cooking. Utility procedures differ, so use the instructions on your notice rather than assuming you can turn gas back on or relight appliances yourself.
Confirm what the interruption involves
Use the contact details on the utility notice or your account to verify the plan. Ask:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Which addresses, meters, appliances, or services are affected?
- When is the interruption expected to begin, and how will the utility share schedule changes or restoration updates?
- Does a technician need access to your home or meter? If so, when, and what should you do if nobody is home?
- Must an adult be present for restoration or relighting, and how will you know service is ready to use?
There is no universal advance-notice period, outage duration, or restoration appointment process established by the utility guidance cited here. Follow the schedule and contact channels provided by your local provider. Enbridge and National Grid describe different access and restoration practices, illustrating why their procedures should not be treated as universal rules (Enbridge Gas emergency guidance; National Grid gas outage guidance).

Check whether your home uses gas for space heating, hot water, cooking, or other equipment, then make a plan for each affected need. Consider the expected timing and weather, the needs of children or older adults, pets, medication requirements, and anyone who may need an accessible alternative or temporary accommodation.

Use only alternative heating or cooking equipment according to its official safety instructions. Never use a gas stovetop or oven to heat your home; Ready.gov warns that doing so creates carbon monoxide and fire risks (Ready.gov power outage safety sheet).
Prepare supplies and household access
Keep basic supplies together and adapt them to your household and the interruption’s expected timing. Enbridge’s emergency-kit advice includes water, food, a flashlight, and batteries (Enbridge Gas emergency guidance).

- Save the utility’s contact details and outage-update channel where household members can find them.
- Check that the phone number on your utility account is current; National Grid asks customers to keep account contact information current for outage communications.
- Arrange access to the meter or home if the utility requires it, and make sure any required adult will be available.
- If your household relies on fuel-burning appliances, consider battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms on every level, as Enbridge recommends. A CO alarm does not detect a natural gas leak.
Do not operate the meter or relight appliances yourself
Do not shut off gas in advance, turn a meter back on, or relight appliances unless your utility specifically instructs you to do so. The correct process depends on local equipment and utility policy. FEMA CERT training advises households to learn and label shutoff locations, but says not to attempt a shutoff if unsure of the safe procedure and that only a licensed technician should restore natural gas flow (FEMA Community Emergency Response Team training).
Restoration may involve inspection, turning meters back on, checking appliances, and relighting pilots. National Grid describes a process involving meter shutoff, system safety checks before gas is reintroduced, and then meter turn-on and appliance relighting; it requires an adult over 18 to be present for its relight process. Enbridge also describes technician entry and tells customers not to restore service or relight appliances themselves. These are examples of those utilities’ procedures, not a universal age or appointment rule.

- Combustible Gas Leak Detector: PT177 is a useful little tool that helps every household with gas appliances to quickly and easily pinpoint the leakage of combustible gas including LPG, methane, ethane, propane, butane, natural gas, coal gas, etc. Important Warm-Up Notice: Before use, the PT177 must be powered on and warmed up for 30 seconds in a clean, gas-free environment to ensure accurate detection results
- Visual and Audible Alarms: PT177 gas detector requires a 30-second auto-calibration after powering on and can detect gas and trigger an alarm within 0.5 to 3 seconds. Five red LEDs and a 75 dB audible alarm intensify as gas concentration increases
- Pocket sized with a pocket clip that allows you to carry it in your shirt pocket. The included storage bag makes the natural gas detector easy to store. It is a convenient tool for RV enthusiasts, DIYers, homeowners with gas appliances, etc
- User Friendly Features: When the battery voltage is below 2.4 volts, the power indicator light will flash to remind you to replace the battery in time. If inactive for 5 minutes without operation or detecting gas, the PT177 will automatically turn off
- What You Get: PT177 Gas Leak Detector, a drawstring storage bag, two AAA batteries, and a user manual
PG&E says customers should not turn gas back on themselves after its service shutoff valve has been closed and recommends a safety check by PG&E or another qualified professional before service restoration and pilot relighting. A closed valve can delay restoration under PG&E’s guidance; that does not mean every planned interruption requires the same visit (PG&E gas safety guidance). Follow the directions from your own utility.

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the area. From a safe location, call your utility and emergency responders, following local instructions. Do not use a phone, flashlight, light switch, or other possible ignition source in the suspected leak area; PG&E advises avoiding ignition sources until you are at a safe distance. A carbon monoxide alarm is not a natural gas leak detector.
