A screenshot can support a consumer complaint, but it does not automatically prove who published a page, whether it changed later, or that the offer applied to your purchase. Whether a certificate is needed for electronic evidence depends on the applicable procedure and circumstances; do not assume one rule applies to every Consumer Commission filing.
Capture the webpage so its source and meaning are clear
Open the exact page that contains the representation, offer, price, policy, or other fact relevant to your complaint. Capture enough of the screen to make the content understandable and to show identifying context wherever possible.

- Keep the address bar or otherwise record the complete URL.
- Include visible seller or website identity and the relevant part of the page, such as the offer terms or product details.
- Record the capture date and time. If those are not visible in the image, enter them in a separate evidence log.
- Use a readable zoom. If the relevant material will not fit on one screen, take an ordered sequence with overlap so the reader can follow the page.
- Do not crop away context that helps identify the page or changes the meaning of the content.
There is no screenshot format prescribed in the e-Jagriti complaint guide. These are practical evidence-handling steps, not official format requirements.

For changing or short-lived pages
Capture the page promptly. A screenshot records what appeared on a screen at a particular time; on its own, it may not establish who published the page, whether it was later changed, or whether the representation applied to your particular purchase. Keep any order confirmation, email, or seller communication that independently supports the same point.

Preserve the original and keep a useful evidence log
- Save the original screenshot file and leave it unchanged. Preserve its filename and available file metadata.
- In a separate log, note the capture date and time, URL, device or browser used, and a short description of what the image shows.
- If you need to highlight or redact information, make a separate working copy. Retain the unredacted original securely and identify any redaction in your index.
- Keep a PDF printout or screen recording only as additional context, not as a replacement for the original screenshot.
Keep private information such as payment-card details, addresses, and unrelated account data out of the exhibit where possible. Do not alter the original to make it easier to read or more persuasive.
Connect the screenshot to the transaction
A webpage image is most useful when the rest of the file explains why it matters to your complaint. Keep related material together, such as the order confirmation, invoice, payment record, seller emails or chats, complaint reference numbers, and any later version of the page.
Give each image a short, consistent identifier—for example, “Annexure A-1”—and use that identifier in your index and date-wise chronology. In the chronology, state the date and the fact the exhibit is offered to show. The e-Jagriti Help Document’s Consumer Complaint filing guide lists an index, a “Synopsis with List of Dates and Events,” and an “Add Annexures / Documents” category. Follow the current portal flow and any directions from the Commission; portal guides and workflows can change.

How screenshots fit into filing on e-Jagriti
The official e-Jagriti portal identifies itself as the unified online platform for consumer cases and says e-Daakhil, OCMS, and Confonet were subsumed into it; the platform was made available from 1 January 2025. Its complaint guide lists these filing materials:
- Index
- Complaint proforma
- Synopsis with list of dates and events
- Memo of parties
- Consumer complaint with notarised affidavit
- Annexures/documents
- Other application categories
Use the current portal instructions and the relevant Commission’s directions for the filing process and document requirements. The Department of Consumer Affairs’ summary of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 says online filing is available at the Commission with jurisdiction over the consumer’s place of residence or work irrespective of where the transaction took place. It also describes virtual hearings and deemed admissibility where admissibility is not decided within 21 days. Treat that as a general summary, not a determination of jurisdiction or procedure for a specific complaint; confirm the current requirements for your case.
Do you need a certificate for electronic evidence?
The Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 has been in force since 1 July 2024, according to India Code. It defines electronic and digital records as documents. Section 63 addresses conditions for specified computer outputs and provides for a certificate when an electronic record is tendered under that section.

That does not establish that every screenshot submitted in every Consumer Commission proceeding must always have a section 63 certificate. The available official materials do not settle that blanket question. Preserve the original electronic file and its context, and check the Commission’s current directions. If admissibility is disputed or important to your case, obtain case-specific legal advice. Do not assume that every rule used in ordinary court proceedings applies identically in each consumer forum.

Raise the grievance before or alongside a complaint
The Department of Consumer Affairs describes the National Consumer Helpline (NCH) as a pre-litigation grievance channel and lists toll-free number 1915. It says NCH operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. all seven days except national holidays, and describes approaching the appropriate Consumer Commission if a consumer is dissatisfied. Check the live NCH service page for current contact details and available online or messaging routes.

The screenshot does not show which page it came from
Keep the URL and visible seller or site identity in frame where possible. If the browser address bar is absent, record the exact URL and capture details in the evidence log; do not modify the original image to add context.
The relevant content is too long for one screen
Capture an ordered sequence with overlap and label the order in your index. Keep the originals separate rather than stitching them into a composite that could be mistaken for the source image.
The page has changed or disappeared
Preserve what you captured and note when and how it was captured. Add independent supporting material, such as an order page, confirmation email, or seller correspondence, if available. The screenshot alone may not show what the page said at the time of your purchase.

Private information appears in the image
Retain the unredacted original securely. Make a separate redacted copy for filing if appropriate, and disclose the redaction in the index. Follow the Commission’s directions on submitted documents.
You are unsure whether a certificate or another document is required
Check the current filing directions for the relevant Consumer Commission and the current e-Jagriti workflow. For a contested admissibility issue, seek case-specific legal advice rather than relying on a general rule about screenshots.
