How to Prepare Trail-Running Shoes Before a Long Hike

Trail-running shoes generally do not need a traditional break-in period: a well-fitting pair should feel comfortable out of the box. Before a long hike, check the fit and take a few shorter walks or hikes to spot rubbing or other problems early. If a shoe hurts, do not assume more wear will fix it.

Do trail-running shoes need to be broken in?

Usually, no. REI says trail-running shoes should fit well out of the box, unlike stiffer backpacking or mountaineering boots, which can benefit from being worn and walked in before a trip. Flexible shoes are not meant to need a painful adjustment period. REI’s trail-running shoe buying guide and hiking-footwear guidance make this distinction.

That does not mean you should take a brand-new pair straight onto a long route without checking it. A short trial outing is useful for confirming fit and finding friction points, not for forcing an unsuitable shoe to conform. Salomon likewise recommends testing shoes on shorter hikes and cautions that a shoe that does not match your foot may not be fixed by breaking it in. Salomon’s trail-shoe guidance offers that practical advice.

Check fit before taking a long hike

Try on both shoes with the socks you plan to wear on the hike. Feet can differ in size, so assess each one and choose a pair that accommodates the larger foot. REI recommends about a thumbnail’s length of space in front of the toes, a secure fit without rubbing, and laces that are snug but not tight. Try the shoes later in the day, when feet may be larger, and walk on an incline or uneven surface if you can. REI’s fit guidance explains these checks.

There is no universal number of miles or days to follow: the sources provide no fixed break-in schedule. Choose shoes for the route, not a break-in routine

Fit is central, but it is not the only factor when selecting trail-running shoes for a long hike. REI identifies terrain—light, rugged, or off-trail—as well as protection, cushioning, heel-to-toe drop, width, and fit as relevant characteristics. The right choice depends on the route, the load you will carry, and how the shoe fits your foot; no one style is best for every long hike. REI’s buying guide describes these selection factors.
