AI-powered search has not replaced SEO, and adding schema markup is not a guaranteed way to earn citations. The practical shift is toward keeping an organization’s identity and page facts consistent, making important content easy to find and understand, and using accurate structured data where it fits. Google’s guidance says its AI search features still rely on foundational SEO and useful content; eligibility to appear is not a promise of inclusion.
Is SEO changing because of AI Overviews?
Yes, in emphasis—not in the sense of a separate Google rulebook or a replacement for ordinary SEO. Google’s guide to generative AI features says that, from Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience and “thus still SEO.” It recommends foundational SEO practices and unique, useful content. Google’s AI feature guidance likewise says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

The “shift” is a practical synthesis: answer-oriented interfaces make clear identity, accurate facts, and understandable relationships between pages especially valuable. That does not establish entity governance as a new ranking factor, nor does it show that every search or answer engine works like Google. The strongest direct guidance here concerns Google Search.
Eligibility is not inclusion
For a page to be considered as a supporting link in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, it must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google does not guarantee that it will crawl, index, or serve any particular page. Its AI features may use query fan-out and different models or techniques, so eligibility alone cannot predict whether a specific page will be shown.

Does schema markup help with AI search?
Not as a proven shortcut to AI citations. Google says no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI search. Structured data can still help explain a page to search systems and may support eligibility for supported rich results, but valid markup does not guarantee a rich result or an AI citation. The official guidance does not establish that adding schema causes more AI citations.
Three related ideas are worth keeping distinct:
- Schema vocabulary is the set of types and properties used to describe things such as an organization or a webpage.
- Structured data is an implementation of that vocabulary in a machine-readable format on a page.
- Entity governance is the ongoing editorial and technical practice of keeping names, identity details, and relationships accurate and consistent across content and systems. It is not a separately mandated Google ranking factor.
Structured data is useful only when it is accurate and represents information readers can see on the page. Google’s General Structured Data Guidelines warn against misleading or hidden markup. A validator can identify syntax problems, but passing a test does not establish compliance with every quality guideline or guarantee a search feature.

How do I get my content cited by AI search?
No documented method guarantees a citation. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, the actionable starting point is the same search eligibility and quality work Google describes for Search—not a special citation switch. Make important material accessible to crawling, ensure pages can be indexed and shown with a snippet, and publish useful, original content that answers the subject clearly. Google’s AI Features and Your Website guide also notes that AI features can draw on multiple searches and systems, which makes any promise of a particular placement unjustified.
For an organization, entity governance makes those basics more dependable over time. Keep identity facts consistent, connect related pages with clear internal links, and ensure that structured descriptions agree with visible page content. These practices improve clarity and maintainability; they should not be presented as a guaranteed ranking or citation tactic.
What does entity governance look like in practice?
It means treating organization identity and page facts as information that needs an owner and a maintenance routine, rather than as one-time markup. Google’s Organization structured data guidance describes useful details such as an organization’s name, alternate name, real-world presence, URL, and logo. Where appropriate, sameAs can point to other pages that provide information about the same organization.
A restrained implementation example
- Choose the organization’s canonical name and primary URL, and use them consistently in visible content and official identity information.
- On the homepage or an appropriate About page, use a suitable Organization subtype and include only applicable, accurate fields that the page or organization can substantiate.
- Review aliases and external identity links, including
sameAs, to confirm that they refer to the same organization and remain current. - Validate the markup and compare each assertion with what readers can actually see. Do not add claims merely because a property is available.
- Revisit the information when the organization changes or Google updates its structured-data and search-feature documentation.
Google says it is unnecessary to repeat Organization structured data on every URL. The goal is reliable identity information, not the largest possible amount of markup.
Which SEO work is established, and which is speculative?
These practices serve different purposes. Google’s documentation supports the distinctions below, but it does not provide a quantified head-to-head ranking of their impact.

| Practice | Primary purpose | What the official guidance supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawl and indexing access | Allow a page to be discovered, indexed, and eligible for a Search snippet | Google says indexing and snippet eligibility are prerequisites for consideration as supporting links in its AI features. | That eligibility guarantees the page will be served or cited. |
| Useful, original content and foundational SEO | Help people and search systems find and understand relevant information | Google’s generative AI guide recommends foundational SEO and unique, useful content. | A specific content format or optimization guarantees AI visibility. |
| Structured data | Describe page content in a machine-readable way and support eligibility for certain search features | Google says no special schema is required for generative AI search; accurate markup can support broader SEO and rich-result eligibility. | That schema causes AI citations or that valid markup guarantees a rich result. |
| Entity governance | Keep organization names, identity details, and page relationships consistent | Google documents Organization properties and expects structured data to be accurate and aligned with visible content. | That entity governance is a separately mandated ranking factor or has a measured citation lift. |
How should a team maintain accuracy and measure results?
Build a small maintenance routine
- Keep important pages accessible to crawling, and link related pages clearly within the site.
- Make important information available as readable text, not solely as an image or other format that may be difficult to interpret.
- Check that structured data describes visible, original, current page content and remains consistent with the organization’s canonical identity.
- Use validation tools to catch markup errors, then separately review whether the content and markup meet Google’s guidelines.
- Check the current feature documentation before investing in a particular structured-data type. Google has retired or removed support for some search appearance types; its documentation updates track changes.
- Keep applicable business profile information accurate and current.
Use Search Console without overreading it
Google says traffic from its AI features is included in overall Search traffic in the Search Console Performance report under Web. Its newer generative AI guidance points to a Generative AI performance report. Treat these as Google reporting products and interpret the data in their stated context: they do not turn an anecdotal appearance into proof that a particular markup change caused visibility. The available official guidance does not provide a controlled study or industry-wide statistic showing that schema increases AI citations.
