You can use an MKV recording in a pre-recorded YouTube Live event if the encoder you use can read its video and audio tracks. YouTube’s live workflow takes an encoder stream, not an MKV file uploaded as a scheduled event: create or schedule the event in Live Control Room, send the recording through an encoder, check the incoming preview, then start the event. YouTube does not say that every MKV is compatible, so inspect and test the file before relying on it.
First decide: live event or on-demand upload?
If viewers should join a scheduled watch page and experience the broadcast as a live event, use YouTube Live Control Room with an encoder feed. If they should simply watch a recording whenever they choose, upload a regular video instead. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the live-event workflow; its upload guidance addresses regular video uploads.

For regular uploads, YouTube recommends the MP4 container in its upload encoding guidance. That guidance is not a universal requirement to convert every encoder source file to MP4 before streaming. An MKV may work with an encoder that supports its specific tracks, but YouTube’s cited live instructions do not guarantee direct MKV compatibility.
Check the MKV before you schedule
Inspect the tracks and encoder compatibility
An MKV is a container; the video and audio inside it also have formats that matter. Check which video and audio tracks the file contains, and confirm that your chosen encoder can read both. YouTube’s settings page lists supported live ingest codecs, but that does not establish whether a particular encoder can open a particular MKV.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Do not assume the extension alone determines compatibility. Test the actual file in the encoder and confirm that video and audio appear and play correctly. The exact conversion choice depends on the source tracks and the encoder.
Remux only when the container is the issue
If the encoder accepts the existing tracks but not the MKV container, remuxing those tracks into a container it accepts may be sufficient; remuxing does not re-encode the video or audio. If the encoder cannot handle the codecs or other properties, you may need to transcode into compatible formats, which can change quality and takes processing time. YouTube’s cited pages do not prescribe a conversion command or guarantee a particular remux or transcode result, so verify the output in your encoder before the event.

Prepare YouTube’s live ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Use the resolution and frame rate appropriate to your recording and connection, and select a stable bitrate using YouTube’s current encoder settings table for the relevant codec and output format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate encoding.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Ingest: Prefer RTMPS.
Recommendations vary with resolution, frame rate, and codec. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than treating one bitrate as correct for every stream. If your file is not being re-encoded, these settings apply to the encoder’s output stream, not necessarily to the file’s existing properties.

Schedule and start the pre-recorded live event
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. It also sets the minimum age to live stream at 16. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements for current details.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Set the event details and visibility as appropriate.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Load and test the MKV. Open the recording in the encoder, confirm the intended video and audio tracks are selected, and check that playback begins and remains in sync.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. Wait for the incoming signal in Live Control Room. Check picture, sound, and stream-health messages before starting the event.
- Start the live event. Once the preview is correct, start the event in Live Control Room. Keep monitoring stream health while it runs.
Test the recording and protect the archive
Before the scheduled start, test with footage that has motion and audio similar to the event. A static image or silent opening alone will not reveal every problem with movement, sound, or synchronization. YouTube advises checking the preview and stream health before going live.
If you are also recording a local archive during the event, verify that the archive file is being written and growing. YouTube specifically recommends checking this during a broadcast. Keep a separate backup if the recording matters; backup storage is optional and does not fix compatibility or send the stream.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that statement to plan an archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer; keep and verify your own local recording when you need a dependable copy.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have the rights needed for every part of the recording, including music, footage, and other included material. Using a recording in a live encoder feed does not make its content exempt from YouTube’s rules. Review the applicable YouTube policies and restrictions for your channel and content before scheduling.
Common problems and fixes
- The encoder will not open the MKV: Check the video and audio tracks and the encoder’s supported formats. If only the container is unsupported, try a compatible remux; if the tracks are unsupported, prepare a transcode. Test the resulting file in the encoder rather than assuming the change worked.
- The YouTube preview does not appear: Confirm the encoder is running and that the event’s stream URL and key were entered correctly. Check for stream-health messages in Live Control Room before starting the event.
- Video appears but audio is missing or wrong: Recheck which audio track is selected and whether the encoder accepts its codec. Test the full audio path before the scheduled start.
- Audio and video are out of sync or playback stutters: Test the source and encoder output with similar motion and audio. Review the applicable YouTube bitrate guidance and use a stable bitrate the upload connection can sustain.
- The local archive is empty or incomplete: Check during the event that the archive file is being written and growing; do not wait until the broadcast ends to discover it was not saved.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification status and whether a live-streaming restriction falls within YouTube’s 90-day eligibility window, as well as the stated minimum age requirement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously rather than stage one scheduled event, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists. The basic steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not require a computer or home connection to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts.
