To play an existing MP4 in an OBS scene, add it as a Media Source. These are separate tasks: remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the streams, while Media Source loads a file for playback.
Choose a recording format that can recover from interruption
Ordinary MP4 needs finalization when recording ends. If OBS or the computer stops unexpectedly, the file may be unrecoverable. OBS recommends MKV for most recording use because an unfinished recording remains playable and recoverable. See the OBS Project’s Audio/Video Formats Guide and Standard Recording Output Guide.

The format is only one part of the choice: check whether the intended editor or player supports the container and the audio/video codecs inside it. A remux changes the container, not the encoded streams, and should not be treated as a universal repair for damaged files or unsupported codecs.
Record a long session safely, then create an MP4
- Set the recording location and format. In OBS, open Settings → Output and set the recording path and recording format. The path is where OBS saves recordings.
- Select MKV. This is the conservative option when a recording may be interrupted.
- Finish the recording, then remux if MP4 is required. Choose File → Remux Recordings, select the recording, and run Remux. OBS changes the container without re-encoding the audio or video.
- Optionally automate remuxing. In Advanced recording settings, enable Automatically remux to mp4 if you want OBS to create an MP4 when recording stops normally.
OBS documents this workflow in its Standard Recording Output Guide. Remuxing is not a guarantee that a damaged recording can be recovered, or that an MP4 with unsupported codecs will play in every application.

When Hybrid MP4 may be a better fit
Hybrid MP4 is an option when you want MP4 output but also want protection against an interrupted write. OBS says it writes fragmented data and soft-remuxes the file when recording completes normally. It was introduced in OBS 30.2; the OBS Project’s Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV Formats guide also says Hybrid MOV followed in OBS 32.0.
Before selecting Hybrid MP4, check the guide’s codec support matrix for your chosen audio and video encoders. Hybrid formats do not support every encoder combination available in OBS, unlike MKV. Version availability and codec support depend on the OBS release and configuration you use.

Play an existing MP4 in an OBS scene
- In the target scene, add a Media Source.
- Select the local MP4 file in the source’s properties.
- If playback performance is a concern, check Use hardware decoding when available. OBS says this option depends on both file-type and GPU support; it is not a guaranteed fix for stuttering or other playback problems.
OBS lists MP4 among Media Source’s supported video types. For formats that Media Source does not support, OBS also offers VLC Video, which uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

OBS saves the file to the recording path configured in Settings → Output. If a long session may fill that drive, choosing a location with enough free capacity is a separate practical requirement; an external drive is one possible storage location. More space does not fix an unfinished MP4, incompatible codecs, or a damaged file.
