How to Prepare Images and Text for Clean Laser Engraving

A machine-ready laser engraving file starts with the right source and physical size. Learn how to simplify photos, preserve vector text, choose grayscale or dithering, select material-aware DPI and test before engraving the final piece.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clean laser engraving starts before the file reaches the machine. Choose a sharp source, set the intended physical size, simplify details that will turn into noise, use vector artwork for scalable text and line art when supported, and tune raster images for the material and laser. Then preview at actual size and run a small sample on representative material. This workflow is more reliable than searching for one “best” DPI or one universal bitmap preset.

The practical sequence is: prepare the artwork, select grayscale or dithering deliberately, set a material-appropriate resolution, assign the correct laser operation, and test before committing the finished piece.

Why preparation determines engraving quality

A laser does not engrave an abstract digital picture. It converts pixels or paths into heat on a particular material, using a particular wavelength, focus, speed, power and software mapping. A background that looks harmless on a large monitor can become a muddy patch when reduced to a 50 mm portrait. Two shades that appear distinct on screen may burn nearly identically in wood. Thin lettering can disappear when the material chars, while closely spaced dark areas can merge through heat.

  • Artwork and physical size: the file must retain useful detail at the dimensions you will actually engrave.
  • Artwork and rendering mode: photographs need tonal treatment; logos and line art often benefit from vector paths.
  • File and machine/material: resolution, bitmap mode and laser response vary with the material, laser source and software.

Manufacturer guidance is necessarily equipment-specific. xTool notes that wavelength affects which materials absorb energy in its Material Processing Guide. Artwork preparation cannot correct a material that is incompatible with your laser.

Start with the final size, material and machine

Decide the finished width and height before judging detail. Resize a raster image with those dimensions in mind, and inspect it at the scale a viewer will see rather than only at 400 percent on a monitor. A source can be technically high-resolution yet still lack useful detail in the small area being engraved.

Record these decisions before editing:

  • Finished engraving width and height.
  • Material type, surface color and whether it has a coating or veneer.
  • Laser source and wavelength, if known.
  • Software’s supported bitmap modes and resolution choices.
  • Whether vector elements will be treated as fill, score, outline or cut.

For bitmap artwork, Glowforge’s general guidance calls for at least 300 dpi and says larger images need higher resolution. That is Glowforge guidance, not a universal requirement for every machine; use your own manufacturer’s supported range and verify it with a test. The advice appears in Tips for Better Engraves.

How to prepare a source image

Choose a sharp, well-lit original

Begin with an image in which the subject is in focus and important light and dark regions are recognizable. A compressed, blurry image cannot be made genuinely detailed by increasing its pixel count. Avoid images with severe motion blur, blocked shadows or highlights that contain no recoverable texture.

xTool’s How to Prepare a Photo for Laser Engraving (updated July 15, 2026) recommends a high-resolution image with clear detail and removing unnecessary background information. For a portrait, keep the face, hair outline and distinctive features; discard distant scenery that will collapse into speckle.

Crop to the subject

Crop aggressively enough that the subject occupies the intended engraving area. A tighter crop gives facial features, product edges or lettering more room to survive at actual size. Leave only background elements that communicate context or provide a deliberate contrast; every retained detail competes for dots and heat.

Preserve an editable original

Keep an untouched copy, then work on a duplicate. Save an intermediate file that retains layers or vector paths, and export a final machine-ready copy only after checking dimensions, color mode and operation assignments. This makes it possible to lighten shadows or remove a distracting object without rebuilding the artwork.

Prepare photographs for tonal engraving

Convert to grayscale or the machine’s bitmap conversion

Color information usually has to become a single luminance instruction. Convert the photo to grayscale in an editor or use the laser software’s bitmap conversion. Do not assume that a black-and-white display predicts the physical result: xTool explains that grayscale values are mapped to laser output according to machine characteristics and material absorption.

Separate important light and dark regions

Adjust exposure first so the subject is neither uniformly gray nor clipped into featureless white and black. Then adjust contrast until eyes, facial planes, product contours or architectural edges separate without turning neighboring tones into one solid mass. Check both the full composition and a crop of the most detailed area.

Sharpen gently

Moderate sharpening can restore edge definition after resizing. Excessive sharpening creates halos and isolated dark pixels that may burn as unwanted dots. xTool and Glowforge both recommend sharpening as part of bitmap preparation, but the adjustment should be judged at the final physical size. Zoom out to the size of the planned engraving and inspect hair, foliage, fabric and other fine textures; if they form a vibrating pattern, reduce sharpening or simplify the area.

Remove detail that cannot survive

Erase tiny background objects, sensor noise and texture that has no meaning at the finished size. For portraits, simplify flyaway hairs only when they merge into a dark fringe. For products, clean dust and reflections that could be mistaken for edges. A deliberately plain background usually engraves more clearly than a realistic but busy one.

Use vectors for text, logos and line art when appropriate

Vector paths describe curves and lines mathematically, so they can scale without the pixelation of a low-resolution bitmap. Glowforge states: “For the most faithful reproduction of your design as an engraving, start with a vector image.” Its guidance is available in Tips for Better Engraves.

Vector does not mean the machine will automatically engrave the artwork as a filled shape. Laser software may interpret a path as a cut, score, outline or fill. Open the operation panel and preview what each element is assigned to do. Convert text to outlines when you need the lettering to travel with the file and cannot rely on the recipient computer having the same font. Keep a live-text copy separately so wording remains editable.

For logos, remove hidden construction lines, duplicate paths and overlapping fills. Close shapes that are intended to be filled, and check that holes in letters such as “A,” “O” and “R” remain open. For line art, inspect joins and very short segments; a cluster of nearly coincident paths can produce an unexpectedly dark stroke or repeated travel.

Grayscale versus dithering

These modes represent tone differently. Grayscale maps pixel values to different levels of laser output when the machine and material support that behavior. Dithering converts tones into a pattern of black and white dots; the pattern’s density and distribution create the impression of gray from a normal viewing distance.

Mode How it represents tone Useful starting cases What to check
Grayscale Varies laser output or another machine-defined parameter by pixel value. Workflows that support tonal power mapping and images with broad, smooth shading. Whether midtones actually produce visible separation on the chosen material; software mappings differ.
Dithering Uses black-and-white dots whose spacing or pattern approximates intermediate tones. Machines that engrave binary dots effectively, or images that benefit from a textured halftone appearance. Pattern visibility, dot merging and loss of small features at the final size.

xTool’s How to Set Bitmap Mode describes dithering algorithms and notes that choices suit different image characteristics. Its Studio guidance generally recommends Jarvis for infrared lasers and grayscale for blue-light lasers in that software; treat those as xTool-specific recommendations, not universal presets. The same guidance says grayscale and Bayer can produce more intuitive shades or a grid effect. Glowforge’s Working With Manual Mode explains that pattern density changes how light and dark areas appear in a dithered result.

When comparing modes, use the same crop, dimensions and test material. Otherwise a change in contrast, size or power can be mistaken for a mode improvement.

What DPI should you use for laser engraving?

There is no universal DPI that is correct for every laser, material, image and final size. Higher resolution can preserve finer detail, but it can also increase processing time. Heat can make adjacent dots grow and overlap, a problem Trotec calls “dot bleed.” The setting must therefore balance detail, dot size, heat and the machine’s supported scan spacing.

Trotec’s How do I choose the right resolution for the laser engraving? lists these preferred ranges:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Material or process Trotec-listed resolution Qualification
Glass, stone, textile and wood 125, 250 or 333 dpi Manufacturer recommendations; surface, coating and detail can change the practical choice.
Acrylic, cardboard, paper and laminates 500–600 dpi Manufacturer recommendations; higher density may increase heat and time.
Metal, stamps and fiber-laser processing 600–1000 dpi Manufacturer recommendations for these processes, not a general setting for diode or CO₂ work.

Trotec also says especially fine graphic detail may justify increasing image resolution to 600 dpi. Glowforge’s at-least-300-dpi bitmap guidance describes a different equipment context. Follow the exact machine’s material table when one is available, and do not increase DPI merely because a number is larger.

A repeatable preparation workflow

  1. Define the physical result. Enter the finished width and height, material and intended viewing distance before editing.
  2. Choose the source. Use the sharpest practical photo, or retain the original vector file for text, logos and line art.
  3. Crop and simplify. Remove backgrounds and tiny features that will merge at the planned size.
  4. Resize deliberately. Preserve enough pixels for the machine’s supported resolution; avoid repeatedly enlarging and re-saving a compressed JPEG.
  5. Convert tonal artwork. Use grayscale or the software’s bitmap conversion, then adjust exposure and contrast.
  6. Sharpen conservatively. Inspect fine areas at actual size and remove halos or noisy texture.
  7. Select bitmap mode. Compare grayscale and an appropriate dither using the same crop and dimensions; account for laser type and software behavior.
  8. Set resolution. Start within the manufacturer’s material range, balancing detail against processing time and dot bleed.
  9. Assign vector operations. Confirm whether each path is a fill, score, outline or cut, and verify text holes and closed shapes.
  10. Preview and test. Preview the complete job, then engrave a small representative sample before running the final piece.

Make text engrave clearly

Use a clean vector source whenever the software supports it. Select a typeface with open counters and enough separation between letters for the planned size. Avoid decorative hairlines and tightly packed condensed lettering when the material or finish tends to spread heat.

The available guidance does not establish a universal minimum font size, stroke width or line spacing. Instead, enlarge the design to its actual physical dimensions in the preview. Check the thinnest stroke, the narrowest counter and the smallest gap between letters. If any feature is only a pixel or two wide in the machine preview, redesign it rather than expecting a setting change to rescue it.

Convert text to outlines when sharing a file or moving it between computers, then inspect the resulting paths. Keep the original text version for edits. For multi-line labels, use consistent alignment and sufficient spacing; a line that looks separate on screen can merge after material darkening.

Previewing and testing: what each step tells you

A software preview confirms composition, dimensions and operation assignments. It does not reproduce the material’s absorption, charring, coating, grain or dot bleed. xTool recommends making a small sample engraving and fine-tuning before applying settings to the final photo; its material guide also emphasizes the effect of material behavior.

  1. Use the same stock, coating and surface preparation as the final piece. Compatible practice blanks, such as basswood plywood, can be useful, but verify thickness and laser compatibility for your machine.
  2. Place a representative crop or a small copy of the whole design in the test area. Include the darkest region, a midtone, the lightest important detail and the smallest text.
  3. Keep artwork constant while changing one variable at a time: bitmap mode, contrast, speed, power or resolution.
  4. Let the sample cool, clean it as you would the finished piece, and inspect it at normal viewing distance as well as close up.
  5. Record the file version and settings that produced readable detail before running the final job.
Test result Likely cause Adjustment to try
Light features vanish Insufficient tonal separation, low contrast or a material that does not show subtle marks. Increase separation around the feature, simplify nearby tones, or choose a more suitable material; verify with another small sample.
Dark areas merge into a block Excessive contrast, dot bleed, too much heat or a dense dither. Open shadows, reduce local density or heat, and retest at the same physical size.
Text loses counters Strokes and gaps are below what the material and process can resolve. Use a simpler typeface, enlarge the text or increase spacing; do not rely on universal minimum-size claims.
Dither pattern is distracting Pattern scale or density is visible at the intended viewing distance. Try another supported algorithm or grayscale, then compare equal-sized samples.
Edges look fuzzy Focus, surface flatness, motion or heat spread rather than image resolution alone. Check focus and material flatness, then adjust process settings before adding more pixels.

Material and laser considerations

Wood grain, glass frosting, stone texture, acrylic color, paper charring and metal marking all respond differently. A smooth, light wood may show a portrait’s midtones more readily than a heavily textured board. Glass often relies on a surface mark rather than a dark burn, while some metals require a fiber-laser process. These are material and wavelength questions as much as image questions.

Use the machine maker’s compatibility and parameter guidance for the exact stock. If a material absorbs the laser poorly, changing from grayscale to dithering will not make it safe or legible. Confirm ventilation, coatings and substrate safety separately from artwork preparation.

Common preparation mistakes

  • Upscaling a poor source: interpolation creates larger pixels, not missing detail.
  • Leaving a busy background: unnecessary objects become noise and compete with the subject.
  • Judging only on a bright monitor: screen contrast does not equal burned or frosted contrast.
  • Assuming grayscale is continuous depth: software may map gray values to power, speed, dot density or another parameter.
  • Choosing the highest DPI automatically: extra resolution can lengthen the job and increase dot bleed.
  • Treating vectors as guaranteed engraving fills: operation assignments still control whether paths cut, score, outline or fill.
  • Skipping the sample: a preview cannot reveal every material response.

Three practical examples

Portrait on wood

Crop tightly around the face and shoulders, remove a distracting background, convert to grayscale, open the shadows enough to preserve eyes and hair separation, and sharpen only after resizing. Compare grayscale with a dither supported by your laser software. Test on the same smooth wood, including a small facial crop, before engraving the full panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monochrome logo on acrylic

Use the original vector paths, remove duplicate geometry, convert text to outlines if the file will move between systems, and assign fills or scores intentionally. Verify that counters remain open and that the selected operation matches the desired mark. Start within the manufacturer’s acrylic resolution guidance and test a small section to check edge clarity.

Small product label

Set the label’s physical dimensions first. Prefer a simple vector typeface, increase spacing where necessary and inspect the smallest characters at actual size. A tiny test containing the smallest text and a solid logo area will reveal whether the material darkens edges or closes counters.

Final checklist before the full job

  • Final width and height are set in the machine software.
  • Subject is cropped and distracting detail is removed.
  • Photo is grayscale or converted using a tested bitmap mode.
  • Exposure, contrast and sharpening preserve important features.
  • Text and line art use clean vectors where practical.
  • Every vector element has the intended fill, score, outline or cut operation.
  • Resolution follows the machine’s material guidance rather than a universal rule.
  • Preview has been checked at actual size.
  • A sample on representative material has been inspected and settings recorded.

Clean engraving is the result of matching artwork, rendering mode, resolution and material, then verifying that match physically. Treat manufacturer numbers as starting guidance, make decisions at the intended size, and let a small representative test—not the screen preview alone—approve the final file.
