How to Prepare for University Exams With ADHD When Accommodations Are Delayed

A practical plan for handling a pending ADHD exam-accommodation request while preparing for the exam: who to contact, what to ask, and how to study meanwhile.

If your university exam is approaching and your ADHD accommodation request is still pending, contact the disability or accessibility office and the exam office today. Give them the exam date, your request status, and the specific barrier you face during exams. Ask what is missing, whether review can be expedited, whether any interim arrangement is possible, and which office handles a deferral or academic concession if no decision arrives in time. While you wait, keep preparing with a short, practical study plan. University procedures and legal protections vary, so use your institution’s current process rather than assuming a particular accommodation or deadline applies.

What to do today if accommodations are still pending

Use the university’s official process and put the time pressure in writing. Find the disability or accessibility office, the exam office, the accommodation portal, and any published urgent-review or appeal procedure. Include enough detail for staff to understand both the requested support and the consequence of a late decision.

  1. Write to disability or accessibility services. State the course, exam date and time, when you submitted your request, its current status, the exam-related functional barrier, and the adjustment you are seeking. Explain what may happen if there is no decision before the exam.
  2. Ask four specific questions. Is any information or documentation missing? Can the review be expedited? Is an interim arrangement possible? If the decision cannot be made in time, which office considers a deferral, rescheduling, or academic concession?
  3. Contact the exam office or instructor through the university’s process. Ask what options apply while your request is pending. Do not assume an instructor can independently approve a formal accommodation; the relevant authority depends on the institution.
  4. Keep a record. Save your submission confirmation, documentation receipts, messages, replies, and the relevant policy deadlines.

Procedures differ even among universities. Stanford, for example, publishes a timetable for completing intake and sending accommodation letters, while allowing discretionary exceptions in specified circumstances; those rules are Stanford’s, not universal deadlines. See Stanford’s exam-accommodation process.

Explain the exam barrier, not just the diagnosis

Describe what happens during an exam and how it affects your ability to participate or demonstrate what you know. For example, explain the functional difficulty you experience under timed conditions and identify the support you are requesting. Avoid assuming that an ADHD diagnosis automatically determines one specific adjustment.

UBC says its accommodation assessment considers current, credible medical information and the barrier to full participation, with decisions individualized to the student and situation. Its FAQ also distinguishes disability accommodations from some academic concessions, which may be decided through a dean or advising process. These are UBC procedures, not a template for every institution. See UBC’s FAQ about Policy LR7.

Understand the two routes: an exam accommodation and an academic concession

They address different problems. A formal accommodation changes how you access or complete an assessment; an academic concession may address the timing or consequences of an exam you cannot complete under the circumstances. Your university decides which route applies and what evidence or deadlines it requires.

Route Who to ask What it may address What to check
Disability or exam accommodation Disability/accessibility services and, for logistics, the exam office or faculty Assessment conditions, such as time, breaks, testing space, or assistive technology, if approved for your situation Review status, missing evidence, expedited or interim options, exam logistics, and applicable deadlines
Academic concession or scheduling process The office named in your institution’s policy, which may include advising, a dean, or an exam office Whether an exam can be deferred, rescheduled, or otherwise addressed when the scheduled assessment cannot proceed as planned Eligibility, evidence, decision-maker, deadline, academic consequences, and any effect on grades or transcript

At UBC, some end-of-term extensions or late withdrawals may be noted on a transcript, and concessions are governed by faculty academic regulations. Check your own institution’s rules before choosing or declining a route.

What exam accommodations might be considered?

Depending on the student’s documented functional impact and the assessment, university examples include a distraction-reduced or private testing space, extended time, breaks, and assistive technology. These are possibilities, not automatic entitlements for every student with ADHD.

Stanford says the amount of extended time is determined individually and notes that approved students may need to arrange testing logistics with faculty. The University of Cambridge describes exam access arrangements as well as study-skills support. UBC also gives examples such as exam time or a reduced-distraction space. Read the relevant institution’s current guidance: Stanford, Cambridge, and UBC.

How to study while you wait

Keep the plan small enough to start and specific enough to measure. The aim is to make progress without treating one study routine as a medical prescription or assuming that a particular method works for everyone.

  1. List the examinable topics. Use the course outline, lecture materials, and exam guidance. Mark what you understand, what needs practice, and what is still unclear.
  2. Turn each topic into a visible task. Replace “study chapter 4” with an action such as “answer five practice questions on topic X” or “summarize the key steps in process Y.”
  3. Choose manageable work periods. Set a realistic block length around your own attention, energy, medication routine, and other needs. Schedule breaks and leave buffers for interruptions or tasks that take longer than expected.
  4. Reduce setup friction. Gather the materials you need before a block begins, pick a location that suits you, and use existing tutoring, library, or study-skills support if available.
  5. Ask about learning support. Check whether your university offers study-skills advising, mentoring, or other student support. Cambridge, for example, describes study-skills mentoring as one possible support for planning and efficient working; availability and eligibility differ by institution.

If overwhelm or impairment is severe, contact student support or a health service as well as disability services. Preparing for the exam and seeking an institutional response are parallel tasks; neither replaces the other.

If the exam is imminent or your request is denied

  • Escalate through the stated process. If time is short or a request is denied, politely contact the named supervisor, disability-service director, exam office, or student advocacy or ombuds route identified by your institution.
  • Ask for the decision and reasons in writing. Request information about internal review or appeal steps and their deadlines.
  • Ask who can decide an academic concession. Disability services may assess accommodations while a separate academic office decides whether a deferral or other concession is available.
  • Check the consequences before changing plans. Do not skip an exam or make an informal scheduling change without finding out how it affects your academic standing and what official process to follow.

For U.S. matters, the Department of Justice says covered testing entities must respond to accommodation requests in a timely manner and warns that delay combined with unnecessary documentation requirements may compromise equal opportunity. Its guidance is U.S.-specific and does not resolve every ordinary university course-exam situation. For legal questions or suspected discrimination, consult the relevant campus office, student legal service, or a qualified local adviser. See ADA.gov’s testing-accommodation guidance.

Why local rules matter

There is no universal university deadline or guaranteed interim arrangement established by these examples. In the United States, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights explains that eligible postsecondary students may receive academic modifications and auxiliary aids or services to ensure equal opportunity; applicability depends on the circumstances. In the United Kingdom, Cambridge describes possible ADHD-related supports and refers to the Equality Act 2010. In Canada, UBC explains its own Policy LR7 process and British Columbia academic-concession route. These sources illustrate different systems rather than rules that apply everywhere.
