Prepare by learning the specific game’s controls and settings, then treat ammunition, healing, and inventory space as a limited loadout. Before each encounter, weigh the cost of fighting against stealth, escape, or another route; survival horror games do not all reward the same tactics.
Before you start: learn the game’s systems
Open the tutorial and controls before a long session. Find the actions you will need under pressure—such as aiming, blocking, dodging, healing, using stealth, or managing inventory—and check whether the game explains them in a tutorial or menu. In The Callisto Protocol, KRAFTON says tutorials are available from the main menu and highlights dodging, blocking, and combining melee attacks with the GRP. Those are examples of that game’s combat, not general survival-horror rules. KRAFTON’s getting-started guide also covers difficulty and accessibility options.

Set challenge and comfort deliberately
Check the difficulty and accessibility menus before committing to a run. Use the settings the particular game offers to reach a level of challenge and comfort that works for you; do not assume every title allows changes at any point in a playthrough. Bethesda recommends lowering the difficulty in The Evil Within 2 if its resource and combat pressure is too high, while KRAFTON’s Callisto Protocol guide describes adjustable difficulty and accessibility options. Choose audio gear only when it helps
Headphones are optional, not a genre requirement. KRAFTON recommends them for The Callisto Protocol, which it says was designed for immersive 3D audio; check the selected game’s audio features and your platform before choosing a setup. Manage supplies as a loadout, not a collection
At safe points or before moving into a new area, take stock of ammunition, healing items, defensive tools, inventory space, and any storage or crafting system the game provides. Keep what supports the next objective and leave less immediately useful items behind when the game makes that possible.
In Resident Evil 2, PlayStation’s guide recommends using storage boxes for supplies you do not need right away. It also points out that weapon modifications take inventory space, so an upgrade can have a carrying cost as well as a combat benefit. The game’s inventory pouches expand capacity, but the broader lesson is to check the footprint and value of an item before carrying it. Assess each encounter before spending ammunition
Do not make fighting the automatic response. Before engaging, look for a way around the enemy, a stealth route, useful cover or environmental hazards, and whether the encounter blocks your objective. If a fight is necessary, consider its likely cost against the supplies you have and the risks of disengaging. Ammunition is finite in Resident Evil 2, and Bethesda describes resources as scarce in The Evil Within 2; the available choices depend on the enemy and the game’s mechanics.
Official guidance for both games includes avoiding some fights: PlayStation suggests sneaking past or running around certain enemies in Resident Evil 2, while Bethesda recommends stealth, traps, or retreat in The Evil Within 2 when appropriate. Bethesda puts the decision plainly: “There’s nothing wrong with knowing when to cut your losses and ditch a fight.” Bethesda’s advice is specific to The Evil Within 2; use the selected game’s own systems to judge when escape is viable.

Explore for useful supplies and clues
Search deliberately rather than clearing every room by habit. Prioritize areas and objects likely to support the next objective: supplies, crafting materials, safe storage, or clues. In The Evil Within 2, Bethesda describes using the Communicator to locate resources and revisiting explored areas when supplies are needed. In Resident Evil 2, documents can contain clues that help with progression. These are game-specific tools, so check what the game actually signals and rewards before spending time or ammunition on a detour.
Adjust your approach as supplies change
Reassess after major encounters and whenever you find or spend important supplies. A route that made sense with ample healing may be too risky when you are low; a weapon upgrade may be worthwhile if there is room to carry it, but less useful if it displaces something essential. In The Persistence, PlayStation’s guide recommends adapting tactics to the resources currently available and scouting for supply crates. If stress is making it harder to pay attention to routes, supplies, or controls, step away and return when ready. KRAFTON’s Callisto Protocol guide recommends breaks and identifies chapter transitions as convenient stopping points. That is practical advice for that game, not a clinical claim or a universal feature of survival horror.
