Then check that program’s current eligibility rules and accepted entrance papers. If it accepts GATE Metallurgical Engineering (MT), use the official MT syllabus and past papers to guide exam preparation while building the broader skills postgraduate study demands.
Choose the program and admission route first
Programs related to materials, metallurgy, mineral engineering and mineral processing can differ in their qualifying-degree rules, accepted GATE papers and selection steps. Compare each option on four points:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Focus: Is the program centered on materials science, metallurgical engineering, mineral engineering or mineral processing?
- Eligibility: Which degrees and minimum marks or CPI does it accept, and do the rules vary by category?
- Selection: Which GATE paper is accepted? Is there also a written test or interview?
- Funding route: Is admission through a fellowship, self-sponsored study or a project-funded position, and what conditions apply?
These are not interchangeable routes. For example, IIT Hyderabad’s admissions page distinguishes MoE fellowship, self-sponsored and project-funded pathways; it states that GATE is not mandatory for self-sponsored admission and specifies GATE papers for project-funded admission. IIT Kanpur’s M.Tech. criteria set out that institution’s own degree, marks/CPI and paper requirements. Check the current official notice for your intended admission year rather than applying one institute’s rules to another.
Use the accepted entrance paper’s syllabus as your exam map
If your target accepts GATE Metallurgical Engineering (MT), begin with the official GATE 2026 MT syllabus. Its mineral-processing and extractive-metallurgy section includes:
- Comminution and size classification
- Flotation, gravity separation and other beneficiation methods
- Agglomeration and process balances
- Non-ferrous metal extraction, ironmaking and steelmaking
Mineral processing is one part of MT, not the whole paper. Read the complete syllabus for the paper you plan to sit; do not rely on an older coaching outline or study only the topics that appear most directly related to mineral processing.

Turn the syllabus into a study plan
- Make a topic inventory. Compare the complete official syllabus with your previous coursework. Mark each topic “strong,” “needs revision” or “unfamiliar.” Give unfamiliar and calculation-heavy areas more practice time, while scheduling review for the topics you already know.
- Rebuild the fundamentals. For each unit operation, learn what it does, the principles behind it, how its variables affect the result and how to solve the relevant calculations. Connect processing methods to materials structure, properties and characterization so your preparation is not limited to memorizing process names.
- Practise problems and diagnose errors. Work through official past papers and answer keys. After each session, sort mistakes by cause—for example, a concept gap, a calculation setup error or an avoidable reading mistake—and revisit the underlying topic before attempting similar questions again.
- Add timed practice. Once you can solve problems accurately without time pressure, do some sessions under exam conditions. Use them to practise pacing and question selection, not just to record a score.
- Recheck the current cycle’s instructions. Exam structure and instructions can change. Use the official information for the year you will take the exam rather than assuming that a previous cycle’s format still applies.
Prepare for GATE’s format as well as its syllabus
For GATE 2026, organized by IIT Guwahati, each paper totals 100 marks: common General Aptitude (GA) accounts for 15 marks and the subject paper for the remaining 85. The MT paper allows 180 minutes. Under the published pattern, wrong answers to multiple-choice questions (MCQs) attract negative marking; multiple-select questions (MSQs) and numerical answer type (NAT) questions do not. See the official GATE 2026 paper list and syllabus and GATE 2026 question-paper pattern. These details are for the 2026 cycle; check the rules for the exam year you intend to sit.
Practise GA as well as technical subjects, and take the MCQ penalty into account when deciding whether to answer uncertain questions. Use the official GATE question papers and answer keys to become familiar with question styles and check your solutions. They are a useful starting point before deciding whether a paid question bank or course fills a specific gap.

Build skills for postgraduate study, not only the entrance exam
An entrance syllabus defines exam scope; it does not necessarily describe the full range of postgraduate work. A representative example is IIT Delhi’s materials curriculum, which includes structure and characterization, computational materials science, materials processing, sustainability, research practicum and project work. It is one institution’s curriculum, not a universal M.Tech. syllabus.
To prepare for that kind of work, practise explaining how a material’s structure relates to its properties and processing, reading and interpreting experimental results, and describing the assumptions behind an engineering calculation. If your target program uses an interview or written test, be ready to discuss a project, laboratory method, engineering problem or research interest clearly and accurately. Confirm whether that selection step applies to your route; not every institution uses the same process.

Start with the official syllabus, past papers and answer keys for your accepted paper. For topics such as comminution, classification, beneficiation and extraction, a mineral-processing textbook can be a useful way to deepen understanding, but select one that matches the current syllabus and your learning needs. No particular title or edition is established here. Add a paid course or question bank only if it offers something you need—such as clear worked problems or structured coverage—that you cannot get from official papers and your existing materials.
