Prepare as you would for a structured interview: understand the role, rehearse accurate examples aloud, and test the required setup. Because “AI-powered interview” can mean several different things, check the employer’s invitation and candidate notice for the format, permitted tools, recording, and review process. Use AI to practice only when the employer’s rules allow it; answer in your own words during the assessment.
What an AI-powered job interview might involve
“AI-powered interview” is not one standardized format. An employer might use AI at different points in hiring: to review application materials, ask questions in a recorded or conversational interview, assess a task, summarize answers, or support a human reviewer. The name alone does not tell you how automated the process is or what information the employer uses.

For example, Hello Recruiter’s platform disclosure describes several possible stages, including recorded responses evaluated for an employer. LinkedIn’s help page describes an AI screening interview in which the hirer may receive a transcript, recording, summary, and rating. These are service-specific examples, not a description of every employer’s process.
Use the invitation and applicable candidate notice to establish what you will actually encounter. If they do not explain it, ask the recruiter before the interview.

Find out the format and rules first
Read the job description, invitation, and any linked candidate privacy or assessment notice. Make a short checklist of what is confirmed and what you still need to ask:
- Format: Is it a live conversation, a one-way recorded interview, an AI-led conversation, or a separate task?
- Timing: How long is the interview or each answer? Is there a deadline?
- Retakes: Can you retry a recorded answer, and if so, how many times?
- AI’s role: Does the system ask questions, transcribe, analyze, summarize, or rate responses?
- Review: Who sees the recording or output, and how does it inform the decision?
- Data: What is recorded or analyzed, and how long is it retained?
- Tools: Are notes, AI assistants, transcription tools, or other aids allowed during the assessment?
- Accessibility: How can you request an accommodation or confirm whether a particular accessibility tool is permitted?
Do not assume that a feature or policy described by a platform applies to your interview. If important details are missing, ask the recruiter directly rather than guessing.
Build answers from real examples
Use the job description to identify the skills and responsibilities the employer emphasizes. For each important one, outline a real example with four parts:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Situation: Give enough context for the listener to understand the challenge.
- Your responsibility: Explain what you owned or were expected to do.
- Action: Describe the steps you personally took.
- Result: State what happened and what you learned, using figures only when they are accurate and meaningful.
Keep your contribution distinct from the team’s. A specific example makes it easier to explain how you work than a broad claim such as “I’m a strong problem-solver.” The Associated Press report on AI interviews quotes Indeed workplace trends editor Priya Rathod recommending specific examples and spoken practice: Associated Press: What to expect from an AI interview and how to do your best.
Practice aloud, not just on screen
Rehearse likely role-related questions out loud. The goal is not to memorize a script; it is to explain your experience clearly without needing a follow-up question to supply missing context. Rathod’s advice, as quoted by AP, is direct: “You need to practice out loud.”
- Record a practice answer for yourself only if doing so is appropriate, then check whether it is understandable without extra context.
- Listen for vague claims, unexplained jargon, and details that do not support your point.
- Practice a concise version of each example, but leave room to adapt to the question asked.
- For a recorded interview, make the answer self-contained: you may not receive the facial cues or follow-up questions you would get in a live conversation.
Use AI for preparation only within the employer’s rules
Employer policies differ. Some explicitly welcome AI for preparation while restricting its use during the evaluated stage. For instance, Bumble’s candidate guidance says candidates may use AI to prepare and practice but asks them not to use it to generate or suggest real-time responses unless the stage specifically calls for AI. ServiceNow’s guidance permits thoughtful preparation but expects independent performance in interviews and evaluations unless AI is explicitly allowed. Anthropic’s candidate guidance also suggests using AI to research the company and practice. These are examples, not universal rules.

If permitted, use an AI tool to generate practice questions from the job description, help organize your own examples, or run a mock interview. Check its suggestions against your real experience. Do not present invented achievements as your own or assume that a preparation policy authorizes live assistance during an assessment. When in doubt, ask the recruiter and follow the employer’s answer.

Read the applicable candidate privacy notice and ask the recruiter what is captured, analyzed, shared, and retained; who reviews any output; and whether a human review or alternative is available. A platform’s disclosure can illustrate what may be collected, but only the notice for your process can establish what applies to you.
Best Value
Do not record, transcribe, or use live AI assistance during an interview unless the employer explicitly permits it. ServiceNow prohibits recording interviews, and UBS’s candidate guidelines say recording, transcribing, or analyzing interviews with AI or other tools is not permitted in its process. These policies apply to those employers, not automatically to every interview.
Test the setup and arrange accommodations early
Follow the platform instructions in the recruiter’s invitation. Microsoft’s candidate guidance recommends setting up the platform specified by the recruiting contact: Microsoft hiring tips. Before a remote interview, check your audio and video, choose a quiet place, and make sure your face is visible if video is required. An external webcam is optional; use one only if your existing camera is unsuitable.
Contact the recruiter early if you need an accommodation or accessibility tool. Bumble asks candidates using AI tools for accessibility adjustments to inform the recruiter. Do not assume an accommodation tool is permitted during an evaluated stage without confirming it.
