Build practice questions from the job description, answer from your real examples, and check the employer’s rules before using AI during any interview or assessment. Policies vary by employer and stage, so preparation permission does not automatically mean live assistance is allowed.
Use AI as a practice partner, not a proxy
AI can help turn a job description into practice questions, simulate an interviewer, and prompt reflection on past work. PNC and the University of Manchester Careers Service both describe these as preparation uses. The useful outcome is not a polished answer to memorize; it is a clearer account of what you actually did and why it matters to the role.

A generated answer is not evidence that you have the skill it describes. Keep each example anchored in your own qualifications, experience, and work. Pennsylvania’s employment policy says interview responses must reflect the applicant’s own background, while Manchester warns that generic answers may fail to reflect a candidate’s experience. Verify every detail and practice expressing it in your own words.

- Choose safe input. Use the public job description and your own non-sensitive notes. Do not paste confidential employer material or personal details unless sharing them is permitted and appropriate under the AI service’s data terms. Check the service’s own privacy terms; they are not compared here.
- Extract the role’s needs. Ask the tool to list the responsibilities and qualifications stated in the job description, then create practice questions tied to them. Instruct it to separate direct evidence from guesses and not to invent facts about the employer. Verify company and role details against reliable public information.
- Make an inventory of real examples. For each relevant experience, note the situation, your task, the actions you personally took, the outcome, and what you learned. Ask AI to identify vague or unsupported parts of your account. Do not ask it to manufacture achievements or fill gaps with plausible-sounding claims.
- Run a one-question-at-a-time mock interview. Read one question, answer aloud before looking at feedback, then ask for specific comments on relevance, detail, clarity, and length. Repeat the answer without reading generated text. This makes the tool a prompt for practice rather than a script.
- Prepare questions for the interviewer. Use verified public information about the organization and role to form thoughtful questions. Check factual premises rather than relying on AI-generated company claims.
- Check the rules for the next stage. Read the instructions for the interview or assessment itself. If they prohibit AI assistance, follow that rule. If they are unclear, ask the recruiter before the session; do not infer that permission to prepare also permits live use.
Know the difference between preparation and live assistance
Rules are employer- and stage-specific. An interview, online assessment, take-home exercise, and application form may have different instructions. These examples illustrate the range; they are not a comprehensive survey or a universal rulebook.

| Commonwealth of Pennsylvania | Allows preparation such as agency research and question practice, but says application materials and interview answers must reflect the applicant’s own qualifications, experience, and work. Make practice useful without memorizing generated answers
Ask for feedback you can act on
“Is this a good answer?” is too broad to guide a revision. Ask whether the answer addresses the question, identifies your personal contribution, gives enough concrete detail, and explains a relevant result or lesson. Then correct any misunderstanding and answer again aloud without reading. Treat feedback as a prompt to review your answer, not as proof that the tool’s evaluation is right.
Use a human mock interview when you need personal feedback
An AI simulation can generate questions on demand, but a human mock interview can respond to your delivery and follow up on what you say. The University of Manchester Careers Service describes running simulations that provide personalized, tailored feedback. Whether AI or human practice is more useful depends on the feedback you need; the cited guidance does not establish that AI practice produces better hiring outcomes.

Do not record or transcribe an interview unless the rules permit it and everyone whose consent is required has agreed. Pennsylvania’s policy specifically prohibits recording or transcription without the consent of all participants and separately recognizes approved accessibility or accommodation tools. If you need an accommodation or assistive technology, consult the employer’s instructions or contact the recruiter rather than assuming a general AI rule settles the question.
Keep confidential information out of AI prompts unless you are authorized to share it. The UK government’s Responsible AI in Recruitment guide, published March 25, 2024, discusses risks including bias, digital exclusion, and discriminatory advertising. That guidance concerns responsible recruitment broadly; it does not establish a specific interview-preparation outcome or a universal candidate-use policy.
