Prepare a historic wooden boat for drydocking by documenting its condition, agreeing on a vessel-specific lift and support plan with the yard, and arranging a careful inspection before repairs begin. The hull’s construction, condition, size and local requirements determine the right approach; there is no universally safe lift method or ashore schedule.
Before scheduling the haul-out
Gather the boat’s history and record its condition
Collect construction records, previous drydock notes, repair and survey reports, and any history of leaks, movement or structural problems. Photograph visible defects with dates and mark their locations on a simple hull diagram. This gives the yard and shipwright a baseline for distinguishing existing damage from changes during the work.

Agree in advance on how the work will be documented: the starting condition, newly exposed areas, defects, measurements, repair decisions and materials used. The Australian National Maritime Museum notes that an updated hull scan of Duyfken provides a record of construction and change over time; photographs and written records can also help preserve a useful repair history.

Give the yard the boat’s dimensions, known weight or displacement, hull and keel form, appendages, bow and stern overhangs, heavy equipment and known weak areas. Ask how it proposes to lift the vessel, arrange blocks or shores, provide inspection access and meet any preparation requirements.

Historic-vessel guidance stresses avoiding damage during haul-out and providing adequate support ashore. The plan needs to account for overhanging sections and loads from masts, machinery and heavy deck equipment, as well as any weak or deteriorated structure. Have the yard’s responsible staff and a qualified wooden-boat professional resolve the vessel-specific arrangement before the boat leaves the water. The guidance does not prescribe one lift method for every boat.
Bring in a qualified specialist when condition is uncertain
Ask an experienced shipwright or wooden-boat surveyor to review the condition and proposed support if there is significant decay, structural weakness or an uncertain history. This is particularly important where the boat’s strength or load paths are unclear. Decide with the specialist and yard whether masts, rigging or heavy equipment should be removed, secured or separately supported. Do not add loads or remove structural components without qualified advice.
At the yard: confirm the lift and blocking
-
Review the agreed plan before lifting. Confirm that the planned slings, travel lift, cradle or dock arrangement suits this hull, and that the operator and yard have a clear way to communicate during transfer.

Check support as the boat comes ashore. The arrangement should account for bow and stern overhangs and transfer relevant loads from masts, machinery and heavy deck gear to blocks or shores. A specialist should assess any significant structural weakness before the support plan is finalized.
-
Pause if the boat moves or changes shape unexpectedly. Watch for new cracking, distortion or unexpected loading during lifting and blocking. Have the yard’s responsible person assess a concern before work continues.
A travel lift was used during the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Duyfken haul-out, but that is an example, not a recommendation for every vessel. Hull geometry, condition and the yard’s equipment all matter.

Inspect the exposed hull and structure systematically
Begin with photographs, then inspect outside and inside where access allows. Include the planking and seams, frames and major structural timbers, keel and garboards, fastenings, bilge and evidence of leakage. Check the rudder, shaft or propeller supports and through-hull fittings where applicable. Record findings and locations before repair work changes what can be seen.
An exposed-hull inspection can reveal problems that were not obvious afloat. During a recent haul-out, the Australian National Maritime Museum reported finding rot in an important structural timber on Duyfken. That example is a reminder to examine structure as well as the visible hull surface.
Treat recurring seam problems as clues
Repeated caulking loss or seam leaks may point to deteriorated frames or fastenings, rather than a seam that simply needs more caulking. The U.S. Coast Guard’s wooden-vessel inspection manual, NVIC 7-95, explains that excessive hull movement can squeeze caulking out and that the structure must be made sound for caulking to hold. A competent professional should assess the cause before deciding on a seam repair.

Choose repairs that suit the boat’s construction
Historic-vessel standards favor materials and construction compatible with the original fabric and caution against irreversible or incompatible treatments. Have a qualified shipwright determine whether seams need attention and which method is appropriate to this boat’s construction, condition and established practice.
The Erie Maritime Museum’s account of caulking work on U.S. Brig Niagara describes reefing old caulking out with a reefing hook, cleaning the seam, driving cotton and oakum, and paying the seam. It identifies skilled work on a particular vessel, not a specification for every wooden boat. The tool and materials used for another boat may not be suitable for yours.
Document repair decisions and retain records of historic material that is displaced or replaced. When components are removed, record their position and attachment so the work does not erase information about the vessel’s construction.

Plan ashore time and relaunching for this vessel
Ask the shipwright and yard to account for drying duration, weather protection and relaunch timing. Do not assume that a longer stay ashore is harmless or that one universal drying schedule applies. Lake Champlain Maritime Museum reports that its oak-planked Philadelphia II swells in water and can shrink as it dries ashore. That is a vessel-specific example; the effects on another boat depend on its wood, seams, condition and exposure.
Compare yard and survey proposals
When reviewing proposals, ask how each addresses the particular boat rather than comparing only the lift equipment or quoted scope.
- Relevant experience: Familiarity with the vessel’s construction and historic fabric.
- Lift and support: A plan that accounts for hull shape, overhangs, weak structure and concentrated equipment loads.
- Inspection and records: Practical access to inspect the hull and a clear plan for documenting condition and work.
- Repair compatibility: Materials and methods suited to the boat’s construction, with attention to reversibility and historic material.
- Time ashore: A reasoned approach to drying, weather protection and relaunching based on the vessel’s condition.
These considerations reflect the historic-vessel standards’ emphasis on adequate support, preservation of character, suitable materials and documentation.
