How to Preorder a Collector’s Edition Without Getting Scammed

A practical checklist for verifying a collector’s-edition seller, reviewing preorder terms, distinguishing crowdfunding rewards from store orders, and responding to suspected fraud.

Before paying for a collector’s-edition preorder, verify the seller through the publisher or manufacturer’s official site, check exactly what the edition includes, and save the seller’s shipping, cancellation, and refund terms. A countdown or polished storefront is not proof that an offer is legitimate.

Verify the seller and the exact edition

  1. Find the official source independently. Type the publisher’s, manufacturer’s, or retailer’s known website address yourself or find it through a trusted search. Confirm that the edition exists and that the seller is named or linked there. Do not rely only on a link in an unsolicited message or social post. The FTC recommends researching an organization independently and checking for complaints; the CFPB likewise advises verifying claims through an official website or phone number. FTC guidance on refund and recovery scams and CFPB warning signs of fraud.
  2. Search the seller’s name with complaint terms. Look for independent information using searches such as the seller name plus “complaint,” “scam,” or “review.” A lack of complaints does not prove a seller is safe, and a professional-looking site or large social following is not verification.
  3. Match the listing to the promised product. Check the edition name, included items, region or version, and whether the listing is for a physical product rather than a digital item or a different edition. If the publisher’s description and seller’s offer do not match, ask the publisher or manufacturer using contact details from its official site.

Compare the written terms before you pay

When more than one seller appears plausible, compare what each one actually commits to in writing. Keep the comparison to verifiable details rather than a site’s appearance or an unusually low price.

What to check What to establish
Seller authorization Whether the publisher or manufacturer identifies the seller through an independently located official source.
Edition and contents The exact edition, included items, and region or version described in the listing.
Shipping promise The stated ship date and what the seller says it will do if that date changes.
Cancellation and refund terms Whether and how you can cancel, and what the seller’s written terms say about refunds.
Total cost The delivered price, including shipping and any other disclosed charges.
Payment dispute process The payment provider’s own stated process for asking about a transaction dispute.

Save the listing and terms before ordering. Record the seller’s identity, edition and included items, promised ship date, total price, payment confirmation, and cancellation and refund wording. Keeping records can help you explain a problem later, but it does not guarantee a refund.

Recognize pressure tactics and risky payment requests

Pause if the seller insists you pay immediately before you can verify the offer, uses urgency to discourage questions, impersonates a known company, requests account credentials or unnecessary financial details, or directs you to pay by gift card, wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or a payment app in a way that leaves you uncertain about the protections. The CFPB identifies urgency, impersonation, unusual payment methods, and requests for financial information as common fraud warning signs. Read the CFPB’s warning-sign guidance.

  • Face Lethal Predators: Armed with Lara’s iconic dual pistols and other unlockable weapons, master acrobatic abilities to unleash devastating attacks against savage wildlife, mercenaries, and mythological creatures.

Do not use a phone number or payment link supplied in a suspicious message to resolve doubts. Find the company’s contact details independently and ask whether the offer and seller are genuine.

Understand what a shipping delay may mean

A delayed collector’s edition is not, by itself, proof of fraud. But vague, repeatedly changing dates or a seller that stops responding merit scrutiny. For most U.S. orders placed by mail, internet, or telephone, the FTC’s Merchandise Rule says sellers must have a reasonable basis for the shipping time they state. If a seller learns it cannot ship on time, the rule generally requires a delay notice and the buyer’s consent, or cancellation and a refund under the rule’s procedures. If no shipping time is stated, the FTC guide describes a 30-day default. Exceptions and the rule’s application depend on the transaction, so do not treat this summary as a guarantee for every order. See the FTC Business Guide to the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule.

The FTC’s guide summarizes a seller’s obligation this way: “When you learn that you cannot ship on time, you must decide whether you will ever be able to ship the order.” This is guidance addressed to merchants, not a promise that every buyer will receive a particular outcome.

Do not treat a crowdfunding pledge like a store preorder

A crowdfunding reward is not necessarily the same transaction as buying an in-stock or scheduled product from a retailer. Before pledging, check who is creating the project, what the specific reward promises, what the creator says the funds will support, and what the platform currently says about delivery and refunds. Platform terms can change; consult the platform’s current official terms rather than assuming a pledge has the same protections as a store purchase.

A 2015 FTC case account concerning a Kickstarter board-game project described game copies and pewter figurines offered as rewards, and said the FTC alleged that the creator misrepresented the use of funds and broke reward promises. It illustrates delivery risk, but does not show that every unsuccessful campaign is fraud or establish current Kickstarter terms. The FTC’s June 2015 post put the creator’s obligation plainly: “If you launch a crowdfunding campaign, keep your promises.” See the FTC’s crowdfunding post and its historical account of the case.

What to do if the preorder looks fraudulent or never arrives

  1. Stop using suspicious contact routes. Avoid links, phone numbers, or payment instructions in messages that now seem questionable. Contact the seller, publisher, platform, or payment provider through details you found independently on its official site.
  2. Ask the payment provider promptly about this transaction. Use its official channel and ask whether its rules allow a stop, reversal, or dispute for the particular payment. Deadlines and available options vary by provider, payment method, jurisdiction, and transaction type; do not assume one universal deadline.
  3. Report suspected fraud. In the United States, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and their state attorney general. The FTC says acting early can help stop or reverse a transaction, but recovery is not assured.
  4. Reject paid recovery promises. The FTC warns that legitimate agencies do not charge an upfront fee to recover a loss. Do not pay a supposed recovery service demanding advance payment.
