You can preinstall an Xbox game only when that title and platform make a pre-download available; it is not guaranteed for every preorder. On Windows, use the Xbox PC app to find and download the PC version. In either case, check the game’s listed size and the selected drive’s free space before you start.
Preinstall a game on an Xbox console
- Check whether preinstallation is offered. Open the game’s official Store listing or check the Xbox app for a preinstall option. Availability and timing depend on the game and platform. Microsoft’s publishing documentation describes pre-download dates for background downloading when the relevant device functionality is enabled; it does not mean every preorder receives a full pre-load. - Confirm the destination has enough space. Microsoft’s documentation says the preorder installation process directs the customer to a drive with room for the full package. Use the game’s displayed size to check available capacity before proceeding.
- Follow the option shown for that title. The exact console and app menu labels for starting, pausing, canceling, or redirecting a download are not established here, so follow the current instructions shown by Xbox for your console and game rather than relying on a generic menu path.
Download an Xbox game on a Windows PC
- Open or install the Xbox PC app and find the PC version of the game. The app can browse and download PC games, including titles in the Game Pass library. Game Pass is a separate subscription; owning or accessing a console version does not by itself establish PC availability.
- Check the individual game’s PC system requirements and the space needed for its installation. Xbox lists Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of app storage, and a 720p display as requirements for the app. Those app requirements are not a guarantee that a particular game will run, and game files need additional storage.
- Choose an installation location if the game offers one, then confirm the selected drive has enough free space for the full game package.
Can an Xbox PC game install to an external drive?
Some Windows games can install to removable storage, but support is configurable by the publisher. Microsoft’s publishing documentation says removable-storage support is enabled by default and can be disabled by the publisher. Check the location options for the specific game before planning to use an external drive; do not assume every title supports it. If a purchased game is missing after release
Open the game’s Microsoft Store listing. If its button has changed to Install, select it to download the released game. If you are unsure whether the preorder or purchase completed, check your Microsoft account order history. Choose a download location without running short of space
- Verify that the location is supported by the game and intended for the version you are installing.
- Compare the game’s displayed full-package size with the free capacity on the destination drive.
- For PC installs, check whether the title permits removable storage before selecting an external drive.
- Choose a location based on available space and convenience; the cited guidance does not establish that one drive type will download or run a particular game faster.
