How to Pre-Generate Your Minecraft World with the WorldBorder Plugin

A practical guide to safely pre-generating Minecraft terrain with WorldBorder: back up your worlds, set the right border, run /wb fill, tune freq/pad/force, and verify every dimension.

To pre-generate a Minecraft world with WorldBorder, back up the world, set a border at the radius you actually need, then run /wb <world> fill [freq] [pad] [force]. The fill job loads and generates missing chunks inside that border. Use the default 20 checks per second only when the server can tolerate it; a lower frequency is safer on a live server. The documented padding default is 208 blocks, while force=true tells the plugin to load chunks it might otherwise skip as already complete.

WorldBorder behavior and compatibility depend on the exact build. The original WorldBorder release line lists 1.15–1.19 as tested versions, while the E-WorldBorder rewrite targets Paper 1.21+ with Java 21. Confirm the installed build with /wb help and test on a copy of the world before running a large fill.

What WorldBorder pregeneration does

Minecraft normally creates terrain when a player moves into unexplored areas. That on-demand generation can produce pauses, disk activity and sudden CPU load, especially when several players explore in different directions. A WorldBorder fill job visits the chunks inside your configured border so terrain exists before players arrive.

Pregeneration does not make an unlimited world safe or free. The border defines the area to process, and the selected radius controls how much storage and generation work the server must perform. A small increase in radius can represent a much larger area: a circular region grows approximately with the square of its radius, while a square region grows with the product of its two half-widths. Set the boundary from the playable design, not from an optimistic maximum.

The WorldBorder project describes its purpose as providing a border for each world while allowing only players with special bypass access beyond it. If the border is part of your server rules, leave it enabled after the fill completes rather than treating it as a temporary generation tool.

Check compatibility before installing

Do not choose a WorldBorder jar solely by its name. Match the implementation to your server software, Minecraft version and Java runtime.

Implementation or release line Evidence in the published documentation What to do
Original WorldBorder The Spigot listing names 1.19 as its native major version and 1.15–1.19 as tested versions. Use it only when your exact server version is covered by the release you downloaded. Confirm commands in that build.
E-WorldBorder The project describes a Kotlin rewrite for Paper 1.21+ and Java 21. Use a Paper 1.21-or-newer server with Java 21, and verify the fork’s current release requirements.
Other forks or newer releases Compatibility and command details can differ by release. Read the jar’s documentation, run /wb help, and test on a duplicate world before production.

Keep a copy of the exact plugin jar, server version and Java version used for the test. If the fill behaves differently after an upgrade, those records make the change diagnosable.

Prepare the server and world

1. Make a restorable backup

Stop the server cleanly and copy the complete world data, including every dimension that you intend to process. A backup taken while region files are being written may be incomplete, so do not rely on a live file copy as your only recovery point. Store the backup outside the server’s active world directory and confirm that it can be opened or restored on a test instance.

2. Identify the target worlds

Write down the exact world names and dimensions you will fill. Overworld, Nether and End terrain are separate world data sets; a border or fill operation applied to one does not automatically generate the others. If your server uses a world-management system, check which name WorldBorder sees rather than assuming the folder name is identical.

3. Install the compatible build

  1. Shut down the server.
  2. Place the WorldBorder implementation that matches your platform and version in the server’s plugin directory.
  3. Start the server and inspect the console for a successful plugin load and any dependency or Java-version error.
  4. Run /wb help in the console or as an operator in game. Compare the displayed syntax with the commands in this guide; forks and newer releases can add, remove or rename options.

Perform the first run on a copy of the world. A successful plugin load alone does not prove that its fill implementation is safe for your generator, server build or border size.

Set the border you intend to generate

Radius syntax

The documented radius form is /wb set <radiusX> [radiusZ]. With one value, the border is centered on the executing player’s position in the examples below. With two values, you can define different horizontal extents where that build supports the syntax. A named-world form is also documented by some builds, such as /wb survival set 5000.

# Set a 5,000-block radius around the executing player's position
/wb set 5000

# Set a named world's border
/wb survival set 5000

Before setting a large radius, verify the center. If the center is wrong, the fill can generate a vast area that is not where your players build. Teleport to the intended center or use the named-world syntax and the build’s border-inspection command to confirm the coordinates.

Choose the geometry

The original plugin supports round or elliptic borders and rectangular or square borders. A round boundary is useful when distance from a central hub should be consistent in every direction. A square or rectangle is often easier to align with a planned map, roads or a coordinate-based build area. The shape-setting command is release-specific, so use the exact form shown by /wb help rather than copying a command from another fork.

Geometry affects work volume. A circular border with radius r covers roughly πr² blocks in plan view; a square with half-width r covers about 4r². These are planning relationships, not completion-time estimates, and terrain generators, structures and hardware can change actual resource use.

Run the fill command

After setting the border, start generation with:

/wb <world> fill [freq] [pad] [force]

The fill operation generates missing chunks inside the configured border. The three optional arguments control how aggressively it checks and loads work.

Argument Documented behavior Practical choice
freq Checks per second. The documented default is 20. Use the default for a maintenance window when the server has headroom; lower it for a live server that must remain responsive.
pad Padding around the generation area. The documented default is 208 blocks. Keep 208 unless your build’s documentation gives a reason to change it. Treat it as a safety margin, not extra playable territory.
force When true, forces loading of chunks the plugin might otherwise skip as already complete. Use true when a prior or partial run left uncertain chunk state; expect more loading work.

Standard fill with defaults

/wb survival fill

This uses the installed build’s defaults, documented as 20 checks per second and a 208-block pad. Read the console after issuing the command and confirm that the job starts for the intended world.

Throttle a live server

/wb survival fill 10 208 false

This example asks for 10 checks per second, keeps the documented padding value and does not force chunks that the plugin considers complete. A lower frequency usually reduces contention, but it also extends the maintenance window. Watch player experience rather than assuming that 10 is safe on every machine.

Force a complete pass

/wb survival fill 20 208 true

This uses the documented default frequency and pad while forcing chunk loads that might otherwise be skipped. It is useful after an interrupted or questionable run, but it can increase disk and CPU activity. Do not use it as a reflex on every server; first determine whether the skipped chunks are actually missing or corrupt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fill a world by name

/wb survival set 5000
/wb survival fill

Named-world syntax is shown in the documented examples, but support can vary by implementation. If the command is rejected, run the equivalent operation while the intended world is selected and follow the syntax printed by /wb help.

Plan a safe maintenance window

There is no reliable universal completion time, RAM figure, CPU figure or disk-growth estimate for a WorldBorder fill. Results depend on the seed, border shape and radius, generator, server version, storage device, Java settings and concurrent activity. Measure a representative test on your own hardware instead of publishing or relying on a fixed number of hours.

  • Announce that exploration may be unavailable or delayed while generation runs.
  • Keep players out of the target world if they would compete for the same CPU, storage and chunk-loading resources.
  • Watch server tick responsiveness, console warnings, CPU utilization, memory pressure and free disk space.
  • Start with a conservative radius or a smaller test world, then expand only after observing the result.
  • Stop the job using the control documented by your installed build, or lower freq if the server becomes unusable. Do not improvise a command from a different WorldBorder fork.
  • Keep enough free storage for region files, logs and normal server operation; a full disk can damage more than the generation job.

The WorldBorder issue tracker specifically warns that misunderstanding radius settings can create extremely large worlds. Recheck whether a value is a radius, a diameter or a per-axis extent in the command help before launching a production fill.

Monitor progress without guessing

Use the server console and the plugin’s status or help commands to confirm that the task is still active. Record the starting time, border values, frequency, pad and force setting. Take periodic measurements of free disk space and server responsiveness. A job that appears idle may be waiting on storage or throttling; repeated restarts can make diagnosis harder and can leave a partial result.

If the console reports errors, save the relevant lines before restarting. Include the world name, coordinates, generator and exact command when asking for help. Those details distinguish a syntax problem from a version mismatch, a storage failure or a world-specific generation error.

Verify the generated world

Check more than the center

After the job reports completion, visit representative coordinates near the center, near each cardinal edge and near corners when using a square or rectangular border. Repeat those checks in every dimension you generated. Look for normal terrain, expected structures and the absence of fresh-generation pauses when moving between tested areas.

Confirm the border itself

Ensure the border remains at the intended size, center and shape. Test with an ordinary player account and with an authorized bypass account if your server uses bypass permissions. This verifies both the playable limit and the administrative escape route described by the plugin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dynmap follow-up

If Dynmap is installed and you trim chunks, restart the server and run Dynmap’s fullrender afterward. The map can otherwise retain outdated coverage after terrain has been removed or changed. A normal fill does not by itself establish that a map renderer has refreshed every tile.

Common failure modes and fixes

The command is unknown or its arguments are rejected

Run /wb help on the actual server and compare the output with the command you entered. You may be using syntax from the original plugin on a fork, omitting a required world name, or running a build that does not support a particular optional argument. Do not solve this by adding undocumented flags.

The plugin will not load

Check the server platform, Minecraft release and Java runtime against the plugin’s release notes. The original listing’s tested range is 1.15–1.19, while E-WorldBorder documents Paper 1.21+ and Java 21. A mismatch can produce a load error before any fill command is available. Test a compatible release on a copied world rather than forcing an old jar onto a new server.

The server becomes unresponsive

Lower freq, move the work to a maintenance window, or stop the operation using the installed build’s documented control. Do not increase the radius while troubleshooting. Check free disk space and storage latency as well as CPU, because generation can be constrained by either computation or writes.

The job finishes but unexplored areas still generate

Confirm that you filled the correct world and dimension, that the border center and shape cover the coordinates you tested, and that the job was not interrupted. If chunk state is uncertain after a partial run, test a small area and consider a controlled force=true pass. Keep the original backup until verification is complete.

Players report that the border is in the wrong place

Recheck the center used by the one-argument /wb set form. That documented example sets the radius around the executing player’s position. A teleport or an accidental execution from another world can therefore produce an unexpected center. Restore the intended border values only after confirming the coordinates and the affected world.

Recommended decision sequence

  1. Identify the server platform, Minecraft version and Java version.
  2. Select a release whose documentation explicitly covers that combination.
  3. Back up every world and dimension involved.
  4. Test installation, border placement and a small fill on a copy.
  5. Choose round, elliptic, square or rectangular geometry according to the map design.
  6. Set a conservative radius and verify its center and units.
  7. Run /wb <world> fill during maintenance, starting with documented defaults or a lower frequency.
  8. Monitor responsiveness and storage, and stop or throttle if normal operation suffers.
  9. Verify edges, corners and dimensions, then refresh Dynmap with a restart and fullrender if trimming was performed.
  10. Retain the backup and the recorded settings until players have exercised the generated area successfully.

Bottom line

WorldBorder pregeneration is a controlled way to trade a planned maintenance job for fewer surprises during player exploration. The reliable method is to match the plugin to the server, back up the world, set and verify the border, run the fill with an appropriate frequency, and measure the result on your own seed and hardware. The documented defaults—20 checks per second and a 208-block pad—are starting points, not performance guarantees; use a lower frequency or a maintenance window whenever responsiveness and storage capacity are uncertain.
