Use a Custom Game to turn a hero matchup into a short, repeatable drill: choose one question, keep the starting conditions consistent, run the exchange, reset, and change only one variable at a time. Custom Games and Workshop offer ways to adjust play, but available settings depend on the mode and current game version. Treat results as conditional tendencies—not proof that one hero always counters another.
Set up a repeatable matchup drill
Start with ordinary Custom Game settings if the current lobby exposes the map, team, hero-selection, or gameplay options your drill needs. Blizzard describes the Game Browser as a way to create games and change rules and variables, including hero abilities, movement, health, and damage. Its menu instructions are older, so check the live client for current labels. Blizzard’s Game Browser overview

- Choose one question. Make it narrow: can a defender survive a particular dive approach, or can an attacker draw out a defensive cooldown before committing?
- Fix the starting condition. Use one map location and agree on starting distance, health or resources, and the first action. Keep the same heroes for several attempts.
- Run a short exchange. The attacker tries one defined approach while the defender practices one response. Reset once the interaction has a clear outcome instead of letting it become an unstructured full match.
- Change one variable. Try a different angle, range, cover position, cooldown state, or timing. Changing several at once makes it difficult to identify what affected the result.
- Switch roles. Let each player practice both sides, then try a few less scripted exchanges to see whether the lesson carries over.
- Write down a conditional takeaway. For example: “On this sightline, with the defender’s ability available, this approach was easier to punish.” A small number of repetitions does not establish a universal counter.
Choose the variables that matter
When you compare heroes, keep track of the conditions that can change the encounter. These are useful practice dimensions, not an official Blizzard scoring system.

- Range and approach: starting distance, entry angle, and whether the target sees the approach.
- Cooldowns and resources: which defensive or mobility tools are ready and when they are used.
- Timing: whether the engagement begins before or after a key ability, during a reload, or with an ultimate available.
- Fight context: an isolated duel versus a follow-up with teammates, including whether allies can peel or add pressure.
Know when to use Workshop
Use standard Custom Game settings for a simple map-and-hero drill. Workshop is more appropriate when the exercise needs scripted repetition, such as timed rounds, automatic hero selection, a randomized order, or custom actions—provided the current editor and mode support what you need.

Blizzard’s Workshop walkthrough explains scripts built from rules, events, optional conditions, and actions. Its example creates a mirrored Deathmatch rotation that selects heroes and advances rounds. The documentation’s access path—Play > Game Browser > Create > Settings > Workshop—is historical; check the current interface rather than assuming those labels still apply. For a script that is not behaving as intended, Blizzard documents using the Workshop Inspector to examine rule activity, conditions, actions, and a timeline. The walkthrough also describes sharing a script through its Share settings and importing one through Import. Those labels may change with the editor. Blizzard’s Workshop documentation

Practice alone—or with a partner
A friend or training partner is the most reliable default for practicing a live matchup. In solo practice, a Workshop script may automate some repeatable conditions if the current editor supports them, but do not assume a standard Custom Game mode offers suitable bots for every hero.

Read matchup results as conditional
A drill can show what happened under its chosen conditions; it cannot prove that a matchup has one fixed outcome. Blizzard has described Overwatch 2’s design direction as preserving hero strengths and weaknesses while favoring fewer hard counters and a broader range of effective picks. Hero access, balance, and mode settings can change over time. Blizzard’s earlier Overwatch 2 hero-unlock explainer said all heroes were playable in Custom Games, but that historical statement is not a guarantee for every current mode or later game version.
