To post effectively on Reddit, find a subreddit where your topic belongs, read that community’s rules, and use a clear title and an allowed post format. Before submitting, check whether your account is eligible and whether your post includes promotion or a repost that the community restricts. There is no universal karma threshold or self-promotion ratio that guarantees acceptance.
1. Find the subreddit where your post belongs
Start with what you want to ask, share, or discuss. Choose a community focused on that subject rather than posting wherever a large audience might see it. A post that fits the community is more likely to be relevant to its members, and moderators can enforce local rules in addition to Reddit’s sitewide rules. Reddit explains this distinction in What are Reddit’s rules?

Check the community’s rules and submission guidance before drafting. Reddit’s posting guide says to look in the sidebar on desktop or the About tab in the mobile app. Rules may specify which topics belong, what format to use, or whether certain posts are allowed.

Open the post composer in the subreddit and see which options it offers. Depending on the community, Reddit may allow text, links, images, video, or an AMA; the available formats can differ from one subreddit to another. Follow any required title or body format rather than trying to work around it.

If Reddit will not let you submit, consult the Reddit Posters Eligibility Guide. A community may set criteria involving account age, karma, or a verified email address. The requirements are not universal, and the cited guidance does not establish one karma number that applies everywhere.
3. Write a post that is clear and relevant
Make the title accurate
Use a descriptive title that tells readers what the post is about. Avoid vague teasers or wording that promises something the post does not deliver. Match any title format the subreddit requires.

Give the context in the post
In the body, include the background readers need and make your question or contribution easy to identify. If you are sharing a link, explain why it matters to this community; do not make an unrelated link carry the whole post. This is practical advice for keeping the submission focused on the subreddit’s topic and avoiding patterns Reddit identifies as spam.

Use labels when they apply
Apply spoiler or NSFW labels when the content calls for them, and follow the community’s instructions for those labels. Reddit’s posting guidance covers the available posting controls; the options presented can depend on where you are posting.

4. Avoid spam-like posting patterns
Reddit’s spam policy describes spam as repeated or unsolicited actions that negatively affect users, communities, or Reddit. It identifies behaviors such as mass-posting repetitive content, link farming, and using promotional bots as potential spam. Do not rapidly repost old content to farm karma, send near-identical submissions across communities, or disguise links to evade blocks.
Consequences can include removal of content and temporary or permanent account bans. The policy does not provide a safe posting cadence that guarantees you will avoid moderation, so focus on whether each submission is wanted and appropriate in its destination.

5. How much can you self-promote on Reddit?
There is no sitewide ratio that guarantees self-promotion will be accepted. First check the subreddit’s rules: a community may allow promotion, restrict it to particular threads, or prohibit it altogether. Reddit’s spam guidance says promotion is not automatically spam under sitewide policy, but it cautions users whose contributions consist primarily of links to a business they benefit from to be thoughtful about frequency. Authentic participation means contributing to discussions for their own value, not just using them to funnel attention to a product or site.
Two figures often cited are guidance, not universal permissions:
Best Value
- 10%: Reddit Help says some communities use a rule limiting self-promotional contributions to 10% of a user’s posting and comment history in that community. It is an example of a community-specific policy, not a Reddit-wide allowance. See Reddit’s spam guidance for communities.
- 9:1: Reddit’s Reddiquette gives a one-in-ten self-submission ratio as an informal rule of thumb. It is not the same measure as the 10% community example and does not override a subreddit’s rules.
If your participation is primarily links to a business you benefit from, Reddit’s spam guidance suggests considering its self-serve advertising platform. Paid promotion is a separate option; it does not make an otherwise disallowed community post permissible.
6. Repost only when it fits the destination
Before sharing an existing Reddit post in another subreddit, check that the destination allows reposts and that the content is relevant there. Reddit’s repost guidance cautions against reposting to unrelated communities. A post that was appropriate in its original subreddit is not automatically a fit elsewhere.
