What does “in order” mean?
It can mean either the order games were released or the order of events in their stories. Release order is the clearest starting point: it follows how the games reached players and avoids presenting an assembled or disputed chronology as SEGA’s official timeline. The sequence below is a practical recommendation, not a claim that it is the definitive in-universe order.

Start with the four classic games
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic CD
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
SEGA identifies these four games as the origins of the series and remastered them together in Sonic Origins. The collection offers Anniversary Mode and Classic Mode; consult the official manual for its mode descriptions. SEGA announced the collection for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Its product page describes the included games, while the launch announcement gives the original release date and platform list. This route moves from the early 3D adventure era into later character-focused adventures. It is selective, not a complete checklist or an official required sequence. SEGA’s franchise history shows how Sonic games expanded across platforms and genres, including racing and multiplayer releases.
Choose what to play after that
There is no need to treat every Sonic release as a chapter in one required marathon. Once you have tried the classic platformers and the 3D adventure games, choose more titles based on the experience you want:

When comparing a title, check whether it is a main adventure or spin-off, whether you are looking at an original or a remaster, and which platform and edition are available to you. SEGA’s retrospective is useful for broad historical context, but it is not a complete current database of every game.

Do you need to play every Sonic game?
No. The four-game classic opening followed by the selected adventure route gives you a coherent introduction without requiring arcade, handheld, party, racing, compilation, or mobile releases. Treat those as optional branches rather than prerequisites.
