For a first-time buyer, the practical comparison is therefore less about buying two separate games and more about choosing the current remaster listing versus an original copy already in a library. GOG says its remaster purchase includes System Shock 2 (1999), while Nightdive’s later delisting notice said the original would be included with remaster purchases. Confirm the current product page and terms before checkout, since storefront availability and bundling are subject to change.

The remaster’s announced feature set includes adjustable field of view, ultrawide support, gamepad support, mod support, and cross-play co-op. Those are reasons it may be a convenient starting edition if you want the modernized feature set. They do not establish that every player will prefer the remaster, or that every modification or input setup will work identically on every PC.
What happened to the original PC release?
In an October 7, 2025 notice, Nightdive said the standalone original would be delisted from PC platforms on October 10, 2025. The notice said existing owners would retain library access and that the original would be included at no additional cost with remaster purchases. Treat that as the announced policy; the storefront’s current listing and purchase terms are the place to confirm what is available now. The notice appears in Nightdive’s Steam news and patch archive.
Delisting does not mean that an existing owner was told to lose access: Nightdive’s notice specifically said existing owners could continue to download and play the original from their libraries. It does mean that readers should not assume the original remains available as a separate new purchase. If you already own it, check the library of the store where you bought it. If you are buying today, look at the remaster’s current listing and any included-edition details rather than relying on an older standalone store page.

These figures come from GOG’s remaster listing, checked October 11, 2026. The listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit; it does not establish a tested Windows 11 configuration or guarantee a particular frame rate on any machine. Nightdive announced support for up to 4K resolution at 144 FPS on PC, adjustable field of view and ultrawide support, but those are feature claims, not performance guarantees for your hardware. Use the minimum column as a quick compatibility check, not a promise of a specific experience. The listing calls for a 2.0 GHz dual-core Intel or AMD processor, 2 GB of RAM, graphics support for either DirectX 11 or Vulkan 1.1, and 420 MB of available storage. The recommended processor examples are a Core i5-2300 at 2.8 GHz or a Phenom II X4 945 at 3.0 GHz, or equivalent, with 4 GB of RAM. GOG lists the same graphics API options and storage amount for both tiers.
Before purchasing, compare your PC with the storefront’s current listing, especially if you are unsure whether its graphics hardware supports one of the specified APIs. The requirements do not name a specific graphics card model, and no current official listing states which unlisted configurations have been tested. Likewise, the 420 MB figure is the listed available-storage requirement; it is not evidence of a measured download size or a broader estimate for every future update.

The launch announcement’s “up to 4K resolution at 144 FPS” wording describes a supported feature ceiling, not a minimum requirement or a promise that a particular PC will reach 144 frames per second. Resolution, frame rate, field of view, and ultrawide support are useful features to know about when choosing the remaster, but the published requirements remain the relevant starting point for a compatibility check.
Buy, install, and launch the remaster
Nightdive’s June 26, 2025 launch announcement listed Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle, and Epic Games Store as PC storefronts. Availability and storefront terms can change, so check the current edition listing before purchase. Nightdive also said the game was playable through NVIDIA GeForce NOW at launch; its current catalog and regional availability should be confirmed directly with the service.

There is no official source establishing that a controller, gaming mouse, or other peripheral is a required purchase for this game. Nightdive’s patch notes refer to both keyboard-and-mouse controls and controller input, and GOG marks controller support as optimized. The choice is simply which supported input you would rather use. The remaster supports single-player play and cross-play co-op for up to four players, according to Nightdive’s launch announcement. Cross-play is a feature of the remaster; do not assume the original edition has the same multiplayer setup. That announcement does not establish current service availability in every country or region, nor guarantee that the game remains in the current catalog. If your reason for avoiding a client is simply to install locally without Galaxy, GOG’s offline installer is a separate option. It does not mean you can play offline through GeForce NOW, nor does it describe installation methods at Steam, Humble Bundle, or Epic Games Store. Keep the distinction clear: GOG offers the documented offline installer for its copy, while cloud service access depends on current catalog and regional support.
