For Road Rash II, SEGA’s Genesis Mini manual index confirms a dedicated plug-and-play option. On Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, the Genesis app requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, but the U.S. catalog reviewed here does not clearly list a racing game. Check the game list before choosing a device or subscription.
Start with the racing game you want
A Genesis collection is not a guarantee that it includes the racing game you have in mind. Check the exact title against the library for your region and the specific model or service. That matters especially if you are looking for a particular game rather than simply wanting a selection of Genesis classics.

For example, SEGA’s official Genesis Mini manual index lists Road Rash II. Nintendo’s U.S. SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online page establishes a way to play Genesis games on Switch, but the U.S. game list reviewed for this guide does not show a clear racing title. Do not subscribe on the assumption that a particular racing game is included; verify the current catalog first.

Which modern options are available?
| Option | What is confirmed | Best fit | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEGA Genesis Mini | SEGA’s manual index lists Road Rash II. | Someone who wants that documented game on a dedicated plug-and-play system. | Exact model and regional variant, included-game list, and current availability. |
| Nintendo Switch Online Genesis app | Requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo lists Switch 2 support and features including rewind and save states. | Someone who already uses Switch and wants games confirmed in its app library. | Whether the specific racing game is in the current regional catalog. The U.S. list reviewed here does not show a clear racing title. |
| SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2 | SEGA says it includes 60 classic titles, Mega-CD titles, and a six-button controller; first-Mini controllers are compatible. | Someone comparing a dedicated retro system with a larger advertised collection. | Whether the exact regional game list contains the racing title, plus current availability. |
| Existing SEGA Classics digital collection | SEGA says affected games already owned remain in the library and can still be downloaded and played; selected titles and bundles were delisted from new purchase. | Someone who already owns the title digitally. | Platform, exact title, and whether it is still available for new purchase. Do not assume it can be bought now. |
Play on Switch or Switch 2
Nintendo’s Genesis app is a membership benefit, not a standalone purchase: it requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Nintendo says the app supports Switch 2 and describes its behavior as consistent with Switch, with rewind and save features. Consult Nintendo’s product page for the current U.S. service details, then check the game catalog available to your account region.

Is the Genesis-style controller required?
No. Nintendo presents its Genesis Control Pad as an optional controller designed for the Genesis library. Nintendo does not guarantee that it will work with other Switch software. The U.S./Canada support FAQ describes it as wireless and USB-C rechargeable. Its listed prices are $49.99 USD and $69.99 CAD; those are FAQ prices, not a guarantee of current price or stock.
The controller and the game subscription are separate considerations. Nintendo says a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is sufficient to buy the controller where eligible; access to the Genesis app itself requires the Expansion Pack.

Dedicated hardware: Genesis Mini and Mega Drive Mini 2
Genesis Mini for Road Rash II
If Road Rash II is the target, the Genesis Mini has the clearest documented match in the sources available: SEGA’s official manual index includes the game. Confirm the exact Mini model and its regional game list before buying, and check current availability. The manual index establishes the game’s inclusion; it does not establish current stock or availability.
Mega Drive Mini 2 for a larger collection
SEGA describes the Mega Drive Mini 2 as having 60 classic titles, Mega-CD titles, a six-button controller, and compatibility with controllers from the first Mini. Those collection details do not, by themselves, prove that a particular racing game is included. Check the exact regional lineup before treating it as a solution for that title.

If you already own a SEGA Classics version
SEGA Support’s SEGA CLASSICS guidance, updated November 19, 2025, says games affected by delisting remain in the library of existing owners and can still be downloaded and played. Selected titles and bundles were delisted from new purchase, so verify the platform and title rather than assuming a new digital copy is available.

Choose by title, hardware, and region
- Name the game. Search for the exact racing title, not just “Genesis games.”
- Check the exact library. Confirm the title on the product or service page for your region and model. For Switch, check the current in-app catalog; for a Mini, check its regional game list.
- Use what you already own. If you already own a SEGA Classics version, check whether it remains downloadable on your platform. If you have a Switch, compare the Expansion Pack requirement with the games actually available to you.
- Compare access and controls. A Mini is dedicated hardware; the Switch app is tied to a membership. The Genesis Control Pad is optional, and its compatibility with other Switch software is not guaranteed.
- Verify availability before spending. Catalogs, stock, and prices can vary by region and change over time.
