Ratatan is played by combining three decisions: enter a short command melody on the beat, choose the order that solves the immediate threat, and keep the freely moving Ratatan leader in a position where the Cobuns can execute it. Start with reliable GOOD timing, use Fall In to repair a stretched formation, and build a front-to-back squad whose classes and Hustle Techs match the run.
This guide explains the command loop, timing grades, command modes, formation jobs, starting leaders, run upgrades, and the platform details that matter to a new player.

What you are actually controlling
Ratatan combines side-scrolling action with rhythm-command strategy. The Ratatan leader can move independently through the stage, but the Cobuns respond to rhythmic orders. You are therefore making two decisions at once: when to issue an order and where the leader should stand while the squad carries it out.

A command entered off the beat can fail even when the sequence itself is correct. Conversely, a well-timed defensive order can save a run even if it deals no damage. Treat the music as the timing track and the battlefield as the positioning problem.

Platform and version context
As of October 13, 2026, the Steam listing describes the PC version as Early Access. It lists September 18, 2025 as the Early Access release date and describes multiple worlds (up to World 5), several playable characters, weapons and skills, multiplayer, bosses, and progression. Steam also warns that Early Access content is incomplete and may change, so balance, timing windows, controls, and available content can be revised.
Nintendo’s US store lists a Nintendo Switch 2 release date of October 14, 2026. An independent Ratatan wiki homepage displayed October 15 for the full release, so use the store listing for your region when deciding when the game is actually available. Release dates, editions, and stock can differ by country and platform.
Both the Steam and Nintendo descriptions advertise online co-op for up to four players. Steam’s store description also says battles involve “over 100 characters”; that is a platform description claim; Steam does not publish a count of simultaneously active Cobuns.

The command loop: listen, read, enter
- Listen for the pulse. Let the phrase begin and identify the regular beat instead of immediately chasing the first visual prompt.
- Read the active input phrase. The game shows the inputs required for the current command. The exact glyphs depend on your command mode and controller mapping.
- Enter every input on the beat. A correct pattern with poor timing is still a failed or weakened order.
- Check the result before issuing another order. Confirm that the Cobuns received the command and watch the enemy’s next tell.
There are three timing grades:
- BAD: the input fails and is not relayed as the intended command.
- GOOD: the command completes normally. Consistent GOOD inputs are a dependable foundation for learning.
- JUST: the input lands with perfect timing.
When every input in one phrase is JUST, the completed command is stronger, the command awards double the usual MP, and Hustle Tech MP costs are reduced. That bonus is valuable, but it is not a reason to gamble a necessary defense on a timing window you cannot yet hit. A successful GOOD command is better than a missed attempt to force JUST during a boss attack.
Default and Advanced command modes
The independent Rhythm Commands & Fever Guide, reviewed July 23, 2026, describes two command patterns:

These are rhythm-pattern differences, not different strategic abilities. The visible button sequence can change with the selected mode and controller setup, so open Ratatan’s in-game command list before memorizing any pattern. Do not rely on a button layout copied from another player’s controller.

A low-risk way to practice
- Leave Default enabled while learning.
- Listen through one complete phrase without pressing anything.
- Tap or count the pulse quietly, then attempt one command.
- Repeat the same command until GOOD timing feels routine.
- Only then try to convert the whole phrase to JUST.
If the visual prompt and audio seem out of sync, inspect the game’s timing and audio settings first. A perceived miss may be a setup problem rather than a tactical mistake. No universal controller glyphs should be assumed.
What each command is for

Fall In is the command that most directly repairs a positioning error. Use it after the leader has moved ahead, terrain has separated the Cobuns, or knockback has broken the line. Jump is specifically for ground-based danger; it is not a universal escape button. Attack is strongest when tied to a visible damage window rather than queued through every phase of a boss fight.
Build the squad from the front backward
A functional formation normally has a front that can hold space, units that threaten targets from different distances, and Hustle Techs that solve the hazards in the current run. The class guide describes these broad jobs:

These labels describe tactical jobs, not a universal tier list. A durable front gives ranged classes room to work, but the best combination depends on the enemies and hazards in the run. A squad with plenty of damage but no way to hold space may lose its formation before it can use that damage.
Which Ratatan should you start with?
All eight Ratatan leaders are selectable from the start according to the leader reference. Choose the opening pair that supports the job you want to perform, not a supposedly best character. The following examples show how to read a starting pair:

For a first run, ask what you need to practice. Pick a leader whose pair lets you learn formation control if you often lose the line, or choose a pair with a clear front-and-back arrangement if you are still learning enemy tells. No objective ranking among leaders is established.

A practical fight-by-fight workflow
1. Establish the line before the first threat
Move the Ratatan so the Cobuns have room to form behind or around the leader. Do not sprint into the next screen and leave the squad trailing. A compact starting formation makes the first command easier to read and reduces the need for emergency Fall In.
2. Read the enemy before choosing Attack
Look for the enemy’s telegraph and decide whether the next safe action is damage, defense, a jump, or a regroup. If a boss is beginning a dangerous animation, one extra Attack phrase can cost more health than it produces in damage.
3. Issue one clear command
Listen through the phrase, follow the displayed inputs, and aim for GOOD consistency. Avoid stacking commands so quickly that you cannot tell whether the previous one completed.

The leader remains mobile while the Cobuns act. Use that freedom to stand where the next formation should be, but do not run so far ahead that the squad becomes stretched. If it does, Fall In once the command window allows it.
5. Spend MP against a defined problem
Use a Hustle Tech when its class-specific effect answers the situation: defensive pressure, support, crowd control, or a damage opening. Preserve enough MP for the next known danger instead of treating the meter as a resource that must be emptied.
6. Reset after a mistake
A missed command is not a reason to continue attacking blindly. Regroup with Fall In, watch the next tell, and return to GOOD timing. Keeping a functioning squad preserves both your damage options and your ability to recover rhythm.

Using Hustle Techs and MP intelligently
Hustle Techs are class-specific special abilities and require MP. The command guide’s perfect-JUST rule gives a full JUST phrase extra value by doubling command MP gain and reducing Hustle Tech costs, but the practical priority is survival and control. Save MP for a moment in which the class effect changes the outcome.
- Use a defensive technique when Guard alone will not stabilize the squad.
- Use support or control effects when enemies are crowding the formation or separating the front from the back.
- Use a damage technique when a boss is exposed long enough for the effect to complete.
- Avoid spending MP on a low-value target immediately before a known dangerous phase.
Because each class has different Hustle Techs, inspect what the selected Cobuns can do before committing to a build. The correct question is not “Which technique is strongest?” but “Which technique solves the next obstacle this squad cannot handle with ordinary attacks?”

Ratakaruta are passive cards collected during a run. The beginner guide, reviewed July 23, 2026, recommends choosing cards that reinforce the damage or defense you already use, advance a desired Elemental Force, or strengthen a focused build. A rare-looking card is not automatically better if its effect does not support your formation.
For example, a front-line plan benefits more from a card that improves the way your existing defenders survive or deal damage than from a disconnected effect chosen only because it has higher rarity. Treat this as version-sensitive guidance: Early Access balance and card effects can change.
Co-op considerations
Online co-op is advertised for up to four players on both Steam and Nintendo’s listing. More players do not remove the need for formation discipline. Agree on who will watch the front, call out a ground hazard that merits Jump, and avoid issuing overlapping commands without a shared plan. A regroup call is useful when the party’s leaders have moved in different directions and the Cobuns no longer occupy one coherent line.

Common problems and fixes
“My pattern is correct, but the command fails.”
Timing is part of the command. Listen for the pulse and enter each input on the beat; a correct sequence entered late or early can receive BAD. Practice the phrase in Default mode and aim for GOOD before attempting JUST.
“I keep losing the back of my formation.”
The leader has moved too far ahead, terrain or knockback has separated the squad, or the order was issued before the Cobuns finished moving. Stop advancing, use Fall In, and establish the next position before attacking again.
“Jump did not save me.”
Jump addresses ground-based danger for the command’s duration. It will not solve every attack, especially airborne threats or a phrase started too late. Read the telegraph and choose Guard or repositioning when the hazard is not floor-bound.
“I run out of MP before the boss phase.”
Reserve Hustle Techs for a defined purpose and use ordinary Attack when the squad is safe. Full JUST phrases can improve MP gain and reduce Hustle Tech costs, but do not chase that bonus at the expense of a failed command or lost formation.
“The buttons in a guide do not match my screen.”
Check the active command mode, controller mapping, and the in-game command list. Default and Advanced use different phrase structures, and the visible prompts can change with your setup.
A compact decision checklist
- Is the squad together? If not, use Fall In.
- Is the next hazard ground-based? Consider Jump.
- Is the enemy exposed and the formation stable? Use Attack.
- Is a heavy pattern incoming? Guard or reposition instead of forcing damage.
- Does a Hustle Tech solve a specific problem right now? If not, keep the MP.
- Can you reliably hit the phrase? Choose GOOD consistency before risking a JUST attempt.
The central skill is coordination: match the rhythm grade you can execute, the command the battlefield requires, and the leader position that lets the Cobuns perform it.
