Yes—you can play many PS5 games offline, but prepare the console first. While connected, install the game and enable Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play on the PS5 you plan to use. Digital games need that setting; disc games need a PS5 with a disc drive. A particular game or mode may still require an internet connection.
Set up your PS5 before going offline
- While connected to the internet, sign in to the account that owns the digital game and download and install it. Sony says an internet connection and account sign-in are required to purchase and download games: PS5 Quick Start Guide (CFI-71XX).
- On the PS5 you intend to use offline, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, then select Enable. Sony says this feature is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in. With it enabled, games and media purchased and downloaded by the account can be played on that console while offline: Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play instructions.
- If Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on a different PS5, disable it there before enabling it on this one. The feature can be active on only one PS5 at a time. Sony allows remote deactivation of all devices only once every six months.
- Launch the game while connected to confirm it is installed and accessible. If you are relying on offline play for a trip or outage, test it before you lose connectivity.
Choose the right route: digital download or disc

If you need physical copies, look for PS5 games on disc and confirm your console has a disc drive. Some PS5 models are digital editions without one.

What to know about PlayStation Plus
Some PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared on a PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. Access to subscription games depends on the subscription remaining active and the game remaining available in the catalog; it is not the same as owning the game permanently. Cloud streaming requires an internet connection, so it is not an offline way to play. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus support information.
If a digital game will not start offline
A padlock icon can point to a license or network issue, but Sony’s guidance does not establish that every license problem can be fixed without internet. When you are online, check that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on this PS5, verify PlayStation Network status, update system software, and try restarting the console and router before enabling the feature again. Sony lists these checks in its Console Sharing and Offline Play troubleshooting guidance.

Check the game’s own offline requirements
Sony’s console-level instructions do not certify every title, update, or mode for offline use. A game may require a connection for certain modes or server-dependent features, and some updates must be downloaded before play. Check the game’s requirements or publisher guidance for the specific title; do not assume that a digital purchase or physical disc makes every feature available offline.
