How to Play Podcast MP4 Files in a Continuous YouTube Live Stream with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop one podcast MP4 in a YouTube Live stream with OBS, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. To rotate several MP4s, use an OBS VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key, test the full audio and video path, and monitor the stream: a loop setting does not guarantee unattended 24/7 operation.

Choose how OBS should play your podcast files

Need OBS source Repeat setting Requirement or limitation
Replay one local MP4 Media Source Loop OBS documents MP4 support and looping; VLC is not stated as a dependency.
Rotate multiple files VLC Video Loop Playlist VLC must be installed. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Gapless transitions are not promised, so test episode boundaries.

These are OBS playback options; neither one by itself connects OBS to YouTube or ensures that a computer and network will remain available continuously.

Prepare a single MP4 or a playlist

Loop one podcast MP4

  1. Open OBS Studio and select the scene that will carry the live stream.
  2. In the Sources dock, select + and add Media Source.
  3. Choose Local File, browse to the podcast MP4, and select it.
  4. Enable Loop, then confirm the source properties.
  5. Record a short test or use a private or unlisted test stream to confirm that playback restarts when the file ends.

Loop multiple podcast files

  1. Install VLC before adding the source. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; match the architecture, using 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  2. In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video.
  3. Populate the source playlist with the MP4 files in the order you want them played.
  4. Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents that it is on by default, but check the setting rather than relying on the default.
  5. Test transitions between episodes, including whether there is a pause or silence, and verify that playback returns to the start of the playlist.

For either source, review Restart playback when source becomes active, Show nothing when playback ends, and Visibility Behaviour if your scene changes or the source may be hidden. Their effects depend on how the scene is arranged; confirm the behavior in a test instead of assuming a particular default suits your setup.

Build the scene and check podcast audio

Add cover art, a title card, or other visuals if you want them on screen. OBS draws sources in list order: a source higher in the Sources list appears above the sources below it. Arrange the image or text so it does not cover anything the viewer needs to see.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Start playback and check that the podcast audio meter moves in OBS’s Audio Mixer.
  • Listen to a test recording or preview; a moving meter alone does not confirm intelligible audio or correct levels.
  • Confirm the MP4 picture is framed as intended and that the chosen scene remains visible during playback.
  • Run a short test before your first public stream, as OBS recommends testing output settings.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event.
  3. In OBS’s streaming settings, select the YouTube service integration if you are using it, or enter the server URL and key manually. The exact setup depends on that choice.
  4. Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your YouTube stream.
  5. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Select a bitrate that matches the codec, resolution, and frame rate you are sending—there is no single correct bitrate for every podcast stream. YouTube says it automatically detects stream settings and transcodes live feeds into formats for viewers.

For one specific example, YouTube’s encoder settings guidance retrieved in 2026 lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30. That figure applies to that codec, resolution, and frame rate combination, not to other output formats.

Test and monitor before relying on a continuous stream

Check both ends: OBS shows what the encoder is sending, while the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health show what reaches YouTube. Before going live, confirm the picture, embedded podcast audio, playlist progression, and connection. During the stream, keep monitoring audio and video quality and check that any local archive recording is growing as expected.

If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or limit expensive sources. These are troubleshooting options, not universal settings; choose output your hardware and network can sustain.

Long-stream archive and DVR limits

YouTube Help guidance retrieved in 2026 says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, so plan how to end and restart a long broadcast if a replayable archive matters.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom What to check Practical fix
VLC Video is missing from the source menu VLC installation and whether its architecture matches OBS. Install VLC; with 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu.
Podcast audio is missing or silent Whether the source is playing and its meter moves in the Audio Mixer; listen to a test output. Test the complete audio path before publishing and correct the source or scene setup that prevents audio from reaching the output.
One file does not restart The Media Source’s Loop property and its scene visibility behavior. Enable Loop and test playback through the end of the file, including any scene changes.
Playlist stops after the last file The VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist property and actual playlist playback. Enable Loop Playlist and test the complete playlist through its end.
There is a gap or unexpected silence between episodes The transition between the specific files in the playlist. Test the episode boundary in advance; OBS documentation does not promise gapless transitions.
OBS reports rendering or encoding overload Output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, and demanding sources. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or limit expensive sources, then test again.
YouTube interrupts or ends the live stream Live Control Room notices, including possible third-party content matches, and stream health. Resolve rights or connection issues as applicable before restarting; do not assume a loop setting will restore a dropped YouTube stream.

Clear rights before rebroadcasting a podcast

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption: YouTube says licensed third-party content may still be interrupted unless the rights holder has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
