XPSemu is a native PS5 port of the original Xbox emulator xemu. It requires a jailbroken PS5 that can run homebrew, and its first public build, Alpha 1, has game-specific compatibility and performance limits. This is not a feature supported by Sony.
What you need to know before you start
XPSemu is the documented route for running original Xbox games on a modded PS5. The project describes it as a native PS5 application—not a libretro core or a wrapper—and says it is based on xemu 0.8.136. Its README says the emulated Xbox CPU uses QEMU’s TCG JIT and the emulated GPU uses xemu’s Vulkan renderer through the PS5 Vulkan driver. These are project descriptions, not independent technical or performance tests. See the XPSemu project documentation.

The project calls Alpha 1 its first public build and warns of bugs, missing features, and slow scenes in CPU-heavy games. - A jailbroken PS5 capable of running homebrew apps.
- XPSemu Tools, which the project says runs alongside kstuff.
- A way to install or mount the app folder; the README gives ShadowMountPlus as an example.
- Your own original Xbox MCPX boot ROM, Xbox BIOS/flash ROM, and Xbox hard-disk image.
- Game images in XISO format. The project says full Redump images must be converted to XISO first.
XPSemu does not bundle the Xbox system files or games. The upstream xemu project describes its aim as researching the original Xbox and providing a way to play legally purchased games. Use system files and game images you are legally entitled to use; this article does not direct you to download copyrighted files. Read xemu’s project and legal-use description.

How to install and launch XPSemu
The following is the project README’s broad setup sequence. It is specific to the documented build and jailbreak environment; check the live README for current requirements and instructions before changing your console or installing files.
- Install or mount the
PPSA97358app folder using a method supported by your setup. - Load XPSemu Tools with kstuff. The project also documents a whitelist entry and an autoload arrangement for the tools; follow the README’s current steps for these.
- Place your Xbox MCPX boot ROM, BIOS/flash ROM, and hard-disk image in
/data/xemu/. - Place your legally acquired, XISO-format game images in
/data/xemu/games/. - Launch XPSemu from the PS5 home screen and select a game in its dashboard.

Which original Xbox games work on PS5?
Compatibility is title-specific and experimental. XPSemu’s compatibility table is labeled as developer-tested on a PS5 running Alpha 1; its entries are not guarantees for other builds or setups. The project says games that run well in desktop xemu have a good chance on PS5, but demanding CPU scenes can be slower. The upstream xemu compatibility tracker is community-reported and may become outdated as software changes. See xemu’s project information.

All figures and descriptions in the table are XPSemu developers’ reports for Alpha 1, not independently reproduced benchmarks or promises of performance on every PS5. According to the project, CPU load is the bottleneck in its tested setup. It advises leaving DSP off for most games and says shader caches can make a second run smoother. The README also lists no save states or save manager yet, 64 MB of emulated Xbox memory, and support for XISO game images only. Check the XPSemu compatibility notes and current limitations.

How this differs from official Xbox backward compatibility
XPSemu is unofficial PS5 homebrew, not Sony backward compatibility. Sony says PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, but that is separate from running original Xbox software. Microsoft offers selected original Xbox games through backward compatibility on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, subject to its catalog and feature limits. The two options do not have identical libraries. Check Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog.
If you want a supported console route, check whether the specific game you want appears in Microsoft’s catalog. If you want to try XPSemu, confirm that your PS5 can run the required homebrew and that you have legitimate copies of the required Xbox files and games in the formats the project expects.
